Someone mentioned the phone will be around 14500 yen, so about $200.  I would jump on that if true.

Sony have keep all best mobile phone for Japan only. This phone and best phone are only for Japanese people, you will never EVER have this phone if you are not Japanese.
All best Sony phone are only for Japanese, if you are not Japanese you will never EVER have Sony best mobile. Never EVER have Sony best mobile for non Japanese.

If true, I'm hawking ebay and asking my japanese friends to hook me up with some insider shit.  That's it, this is now personal!

So I've been browsing this one site talking about the phone:
http://www.gsmarena....05d-reviews-4775.php

The comments are fascinating.  Check it out:
My wife has this phone. Got it 2 days ago and she likes it a lot. It has many languages installed by default so you can use it. But does it support your network? The battery is removable. I like the size a lot. I got the xperia gx and think its a little big. We both had the arc before and i think it was the perfect size.

if you understand the japanese language then you can import it cause dont know if the phone have english language. It has english support. Don't worry about that. :)
answering question of if the phone has english support. yes!

This mobile will NEVER be available to outside of Japan, it is only for Japan and if you not Japanese you will NEVER NEVER have this phone.
This phone is ONLY for Japanese and never to non Japanese. Please do not ask me as it will be only for Japan people, non Japan people will NEVER have this phone.
What's your or SOny's problem??!!  I just want to give you money for something!

even if iphone 5 gets out... i'd rather have this...

^^Thanks for the info, always good to know.  Only Cuteftp asks for a certificate password, filezilla doesn't.  But even in cuteftp, it asks for it when I use a different setting like sftp instead of explicit ftp.  The feedback from the programs are odd.  you would assume if you chose the wrong protocol, nothing would work, just immediate errors.  But what's happening is it looks like it works halfway with different protocols, then you run into a certificate password, or something else.  It's not like these other protocols are completely NOT working.  I find that as weird as an address not mattering whether it started with http or https

Enjoy guys, the famous Benny Goodman scene.  I was enjoying this years before I even knew or could play jazz:

--A suspense movie with a blind girl.  A thief comes into her apartment and there's a whole thing that happens with her turning the lights off, the phone, and some other stuff I don't remember.  Very fun movie.

Not certain, but think that was Wait Until Dark.  At least, that was about a blind woman in an invaded apartment.

I remember seeing the subway movie, but have no recollection of the title.  I'm kinda partial to the old black-and-whites  (especially the old sci-fi ), but don't remember titles worth a damn .
The Incident !!

I'll snark myself on this one...let me google that for you.  Shut up.

Danny Kaye!  Thanks 40.  The movie I think I was thinking of was A Song Is Born.

I'll have to rewatch it, but I'm pretty sure that's it.

So what do you guys think of these old movies?  have they stood the test of time?  I've been sorely disappointed by the last 3-5 years of Hollywood's movies, I was wondering how these "Golden Era" movies have stood up to those who maybe were familiar with them before we got desensitized to the sheer quantity of produced movies.

Also...ok guys, there are two movies that I once liked as a kid, but I have ZERO idea what the title/actor/etc is so I've never been able to find them.  Here they are:
--A suspense movie with a blind girl.  A thief comes into her apartment and there's a whole thing that happens with her turning the lights off, the phone, and some other stuff I don't remember.  Very fun movie.

--This movie is black and white and takes place entirely on one subway train trip.  The whole thing is about a bully who comes on the train and how people react to it, i think.  But the main feature is that it's literally just one scene on the train the whole movie.

I haven't seen these movies in maybe 20 years.  help!!

I also just installed Rockbox on the Clip Zip.  Other than finicky USB connection issues, I had no problems.  Album art doesn't seem to work.  At least not for my files, where the album art is embedded in the mp3 files.  Actually, I thought I read that album art won't work if they are over 75kb, and I'd say most of mine are way more than that, like 500kb.  lame.

but a couple of those themes are amazing.  What people do with 96x96 pixels is impressive.

My mom used to make me watch Fred Astaire movies as a kid.  I always thought he was overrated. I never understood the hype.  I liked that Danny Gatton guy.  There was this movie from those days where the 'new' jazz guys were teaching the classical musicians how to improvise.  I'd love it if someone remembered the name of that movie. :)

ewemoa, thanks for that info!  I also use WinSCP occasionally.  It's good to know what settings work with each client.

@superboyac:
Although unlikely in your case, I still want to point out that depending on the type of certificate, a password for that particular certificate can be required. Public certificates normally do not require a password, private (or personal) certificates do.

You can recognize them by looking at their extension. If it is *.pfx or *.p12 you look at a private certificate.
Would the password be the same as the one I use to log into the ftp site?

See?  The docomo site, if you click the "English" button on the main page, shows this:
Screenshot - 9_1_2012 , 1_35_51 AM.png

What the f--- does "In Japanese only" mean?  The phone can only show japanese language?  That's hard to believe if it's Android, as Android can switch between multiple languages, right?  So is the Sony software overlay on Android the thing preventing it from showing english?  Is there a way to get stock android on it so I don't worry about what customizations sony did?

Or, is it saying that only Japanese customers can buy it?  Is it a phone that is only available with a japanese company's cell plan?

Am I going to have to contact my corporate Sony contact to get it?  Will he even help me?

The following page appears to indicate that the SX is on sale:

  http://www.sonymobile.co.jp/product/docomo/so-05d/

At least I think that's what:

  http://www.sonymobile.co.jp/product/docomo/so-05d/images/index_bg.jpg

means.

The following also seems to claim availability:

  http://www.nttdocomo.co.jp/product/with/so05d/
Can you read that?  I came across that docomo site, but I was hoping to see english numbers to indicate some kind of price tag.  There's only three things I need to know: what is the price, can i buy it straight up as an American or am I going to need to be sneaky about it, does the phone have an English language option (I'm guessing "of course" since it's Android, but you never know)?
1666
the reason why I'm anxious is that as soon as I find a place that can sell it, I'm going straight to my japanese friend and asking him to get it for me.  I'm done waiting, this is the phone I want.  I've waited 5 years for these damn phones to get smaller, not bigger.
1667
Guys, help me understand...how the hell was this thing released a week or two ago, and I can't find one single place to buy it?  Not even japanese websites, nothing!  Not ebay!  There isn't even any news on the freaking thing.  On June 30, there was a blast of articles saying it will be released next week and nothing more since.

I don't understand.  I thought the internet would have loads of info as soon as a handful of people heard about the device.  This may sound weird, but I think this shows how much bullshit information there is on the internet, and how little information is revelaed by all of us publicly.  because if i understand how the internet works, any juicy piece of information about any topic will be impossible to hide.  The only way it can remain hidden when the information exists is that it was never released or leaked.  Once it's out there...there's no stopping it.
1668
Just some confirming data...

So it looks like filezilla uses one way to successfully log in, and dopus works with the other way.

IIRC, when I use FileZilla for dcmembers, I use FTP TLS in Explicit mode.

From the command line, I think I've had success using both SFTP as well as scp (older method in SSH protocol for file transfer).

Note that despite similarities in naming, FTP and SFTP are entirely different protocols.
I understand what you are saying, and it makes sense.  There seems to be a variety of ways to get into the dcmembers server.  We should figure out the proper settings for each of the common clients.  But the real question is: what is the information we will need in order to figure out how to log in from ANY client?

Living Room / Re: modular, borderless monitors suggestions please?
« Last post by superboyac on August 31, 2012, 04:02 PM »
I don't think, other than Apple's retina display, anyone has any pc displays that can go higher than 1080p.

Don't be too sure about that... :)
Not sure I saw what you meant to show me.  I see that there's a resolution there that's listed as higher than 1080p with a 144dpi.  I should clarify, what's unique about Apple's retina display is the pixel density which is 300dpi I think.

For the purposes of this discussion, I guess I don't need pixel density since it's going to be a video wall.  But I do think i want 1080p minimum for each monitor.  Why?  Let's say I have 9 monitors, and I want to use just one to show a 1080p video.  I want that video to look right or good or whatever.  I don't want a monitor with less than 1080p playing a 1080p video.  Now, if any of these video wall monitors are higher than 1080p (I don't think it exists or is available currently) that isn't necessarily good because then a 1080p playing in fullscreen will have to upscale or something.  Since 1080p is the standard right now, maybe that's what I'm looking for.

After a few hours of research yesterday, it's looking like a 1080p Samsung video wall is the ideal solution right now.  Unless I find something better, I'll contact them next week.

The other thing I don't understand: what is the difference between Microsoft's Pixelsense computer, and other large touchscreen monitors that can run Windows on it?  Pixelsense has some cool, custom software on it...that's the only thing I see.  The laternative, a regular Windows 7 installation on a very large touchscreen, seems like it would be more flexible since I can use all the regular Windows freeware/software on it.  But it wouldn't have some of the really nifty features of Pixelsense.  Maybe I'll have both: a Pixelsense table, and another wall-mounted regular Windows touchscreen.  One can be used for small collaborative meetings (Pixelsense), and the other can be used for doing less cool looking, but more poweruser activities, using touch controls.

OK, for DOpus settings (go here to see my post in the ftp settings thread):
--it seems like you have to choose the "secure ftp via SSH" rather than the "secure ftp TLS" setting (see below)
Screenshot - 8_31_2012 , 1_31_19 PM.png

and to me, this is a little puzzling since in filezilla you choose the "require explicit ftp over tls" setting...and there's another setting for using sftp/ssh.  So it looks like filezilla uses one way to successfully log in, and dopus works with the other way.

now for cuteftp, if i use the sftp/ssh setting instead of the explicit ftp, interesting things happen.  First, it looks like it's going to work and asks me to add a certificate to my trusted whatever.  So I say yes.  But then the problem occurs...it asks me for a password.  When I put my dc server password, it doesn't work.  So it's weird, it looks like it's going to work, but it doesn't.
If I use the explicit setting, it just says "server is requesting client certificate; create or import one".  So i don't get it.
1673
I know I should probably put this in the ftp settings thread, but I wanted to use the public forum in case someone had good advice or suggestions...

For the past few years, those of us who use the DC server probably rely on our trusty Filezilla settings to get in.  What I don't understand is why just about all the other ftp clients don't seem to work.  I really would like to get the logins to work with DOpus (which I paid extra to get the secure ftp features) and cuteftp, which is supposed to be an enterprise level ftp client.  Now, ever since the explicit-tls move a few years back, just about all these clients and probably others have a difficult to impossible time connecting to the DC server.  Can we try to fix this or nail what the issue actually is?  We've privately gone around and around on this before, but no answer seems to come up.  I also don't want to bother mouser and gothic with it until we figure out where the issue is arising, as they are already very busy.

So the question is: what is filezilla doing that the other clients can't do?  And if it is clicking a setting or two, which of the settings is it?  I'll personally be specifically interested in DOpus and Cuteftp.

[edit] just fyi, I used to use the server a lot and stopped the last 3 years preciesly because of this issue.  I went from transferring files back and forth easily to spending most of my time trying to figure out why it doesn't work, and I essentially gave up.  Also, it stopped working at work.  So what happened is that I could only try to use it for a couple of hours in the evening when I was NOT at work and had all my clients and settings to play around with freely.  As a result, I stopped updating my dc website.

I like that one.

Native resolution is extremely low for a 46" screen (1366 x 768) - I know you can bump that up but it's never as good as the native resolution (I believe).
good point.  Yes, I want as high a resolution as possible.  I'm going to say 1080p minimum.  I don't think, other than Apple's retina display, anyone has any pc displays that can go higher than 1080p.
