I've been using this script for some time though I've not studied the code

yeah, accountability is a reasonable expectation

Reading this thread i couldn't help wondering if this was really such a problem, or if a lot of it was speculative (some posters seemed pretty worked up about it...)

a non-issue for me as I don't travel, or own a laptop, but it seemed to me that laptops were only the tip of the potential iceberg as any digital device (eg usb keys, mobile phones, digital camera's, memory cards, even some kid's toys) could be subject to this legislation...

"Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-CA) has introduced a bill that would add accountability to the DHS searches conducted upon the laptops of those crossing the border. Specifically, it would require the issue of receipts to those who had their property confiscated so that it could later be returned, would limit how long the DHS can keep laptops, would require them to keep the laptop's information secure, and would create a way to complain about abuse. Finally, the DHS would be required to keep track of how many searches were done and report the details to Congress. Rep. Sanchez also has also issued a statement about the proposed bill."

still here, and impressed with the responses, however most of them seem like major overkill...

to further clarify this, there is no requirement for a collaborative type tool

we are (locally) a very small group (4 staff) that, while functionally part of the same team, all work independently and report to management interstate.  The intention here was not for a time or attendance tracking tool, rather for a simple FYI type arrangement so that we have some visibility of each others movements.

Also, operating inside a corporate LAN precludes installing a lot of software (client/server apps, databases, etc).

I've been playing around with a TiddlyWiki and have modified my original layout from a set of defined fields for each user to a single tiddler for each user which seems like an acceptable solution - yet to be put to the test though

SQL notes sounds like an interesting alternative (I've looked at this one before, albeit sometime ago, and not in this context), though again, it may be overkill.

good point!!

I'm using GreenBrowser (an IE shell), but it does the same in IE (which is, i suppose, to be expected).

Clicking on a member name takes me to the map, then flicks me off to some point else, eg clicking on Phil Whites link centres on his location, then zings off to somewhere southwest of new zealand

It works as expected in Firefox (2.X) though

and I'd like to second that thankyou!!  it's a great way to see where everyone is (at least everyone that participates that is...)

dunno if it's me, or if this is getting a caning from users, but it's pretty patchy here

after discovering there is another town of the same name somewhere in the UK, I managed to place my pin correctly, but the map just doesn't display anything of value - the move arrows don't, zooming on a location loses any/all pins, clicking on a my location and the 'flag' displays out of the window so I can't see it, clicking through everyones location momentarily flashes a map that may or may not have been their actual location before returning to some nominal (random?) location

anyone else experiencing this?

FYI it doesn't have to be a wiki - it just seemed like a wiki would match my basic requirements.

Another consideration is the fact that my colleagues are not tech savvy, so the need to understand and use wiki syntax may rule this out...

thinking about it a bit more an alternative may be a simple AHK script that generates the requisite HTML file (with links to the script for processing updates...)

some clarification

I anticipate this would be a single self contained page (think wiki on a stick) as, apart from the aforementioned attendance details, it won't be sued for data storage or sharing

given that, I doubt I need database support, nor do I really need 'whiteboard' functionality

I visited wiki matrix yesterday, but most everything had a dependency on something else (linux, PHP, webserver, IIS, PERL, Python, etc) which would be overkill and i suppose I was trying to avoid

this is pretty trivial but I have an idea I've been kicking around for a couple of days and I need some guidance...

we recently moved office and the new site doesn't have any white boards - that could be a good thing, but it doesn't leave us anywhere to note our teams whereabouts (planned leave, meetings, etc)

I was thinking along the lines of a 'web' page that could sit on one the local machines and provide the same basic function, ie a simple table where we can add a name, and details of upcoming events/absences (see the attached HTML example).  It shouldn't be static, rather users should be able to edit or update their respective entries

It seems to me that a wiki would do exactly what I want, but I've never really gotten into them (love the idea, just can't quite grasp the reality) so I have no idea whether or not there's something out there that might fit (from literally thousands )

any ideas?

I've never needed this sort of functionality so I've never really taken that much notice, but...

look for some browser plugins - I don't know what you use, but i'm pretty sure there are firefox plugins that will allow you to annotate a web page

and I'll second the open expert option - this is a neat tool

if you want to do it by hand go to the file types dialog (in explorer select TOOLS | FOLDER OPTIONS, then go to the file Types tab) - select the extension you want to work with (or add one if its not already there) and click on edit (or add, or delete, as required).  You can add multiple entries (just make sure they have different titles)

note that, depending on the source file, decompiling (decomposition?) can generate a LOT of files...

I don't know that much about them, but a random check here indicates there is a favourites tab (on the left hand pane)where you can (presumably) bookmark your...err...favourites

The existence of this functionality may be dependent on the tool with which it was authored and/or the authors preferences when building the file...

you might be lucky to find any sort of annotation application - having said that I have a vague recollection of apps that will allow you to do this with web pages so that might help.

Another option would be to decompile to a collection of HTML files that you can do what you want with...

not quite sure what your issues are here, more details please...

CHM files are self contained and don't normally require any sort of reader application - there is an issue with XP where one of the MS security updates 'broke' CHM functionality - basically it blocks the opening of 'unregistered' help files. 

Google turns up a few options to register uncooperative help files (or see the <a href="http://www.vizacc.com">VA Help site</a> for CHM register)

don't know about the bookmarking functionality, I've never seen or heard of this one before...

perhaps look at <a href="http://blueonionsoft...e.aspx'>Desk Drive</a> which claims to manage your USB connections.  I haven't used it so I can't comment (I don't really have a need for it) but it may do what you want

I went back to using drive letters both because of the freespace issue and because I couldn't ID a given (USB) drive if I wanted to remove it (they just come up as a generic device), and while there is a way around this, it's much longer and I'm waaaay too lazy...

we ended up plumping for the aforementioned Canon (MP610)

at $200 it was double what we paid for the HP, but it's been worth it because it works as expected (no crashes, no random reinstalls, no constant calls home...)

so far the quality has been (in my admittedly limited experience) excellent - it's fast and quiet, and, well, it just works!! (take that HP!!)
