General Software Discussion / Re: Software Hall of Fame
« Last post by rgdot on August 05, 2011, 01:46 PM »
Not sure I can explain it now in 2011 but PageMaker was good (whatever that means) back in the day.

That's because PageMaker was "it" back in the day!  ;D

Or was until Quark Xpress showed up and piddled all over their pop tarts! :P

(To be fair, they've gotten almost all of it back with the advent of their CS release.  :-* )

InDesign is the successor isn't it? Haven't ever used it myself.

Taxes are for the benefit society at large not a government agency or office or individual entity. What is being suggested by Eóin (not saying you support the idea) is catastrophic if it holds up.

Governments being seen as corporations (and therefore automatically in competition with other corporations) is a disastrous notion.

EDIT:
A perhaps exaggerated example:
Tobacco companies paying taxes but then complaining when it is used to fund quit smoking programs. I say exaggerated because you may dismiss this as being different (health care vs software) but all it takes is one lawyer :D

My thoughts

1. Despite what everybody says I think twitter is too different to be a competitor. '140 characters quick glance' will always have its user base and appeal.
2. Why not circles? To me circles is the next step in evolution of groups. Actually it's probably the only feature of Google+ I would call innovative.
3. As far as I have seen Google+ defaults to the last used sharing method. Public, your circles, etc.
4. Sparks feels like a mashup. RSS feed/google reader/suggested sites. In my opinion if not improved it won't survive a chopping block.

There should only be an icon that goes (few lines down) to the same page's comment form  :P

saying they suspected Chinese hackers

 Sarcastic lol @ google. If it's happening they know. No suspicions or ifs

Long long ago they suspended my adsense one week before a payout was due and sent me a note accusing me of clicking to increase income. Ever since then I know they are scam artists, if gmail didn't have so many good features I wouldn't have gotten into google services to begin with.

No, it's not only you.

You have to take into account one thing though, we live in an age where people can influence things, to a point any way...before you laugh at me...
From simple voting (US for example) to masses in the streets (Egypt) and to breaking down walls (Germany) people can produce change. The problem is how much people follow through and make sure the change is for the better AND remains for the better.

That's why I am not a critic of governments as much as I am a critic of those who allow it to be what it is...the voters. Even massive corporate influence can be succumbed if the voters see to it.

Mouser is probably too expensive (I have no idea what that means lol)

From my perspective the emphasis should be on note visibility without using a search form. Mimicking notes written by hand on a paper but in an organized fashion.
I realize this doesn't sound like a complete thought and that's why some of the above mentioned come close, it's a lot like "I won't be sure until I use it and see how it is"

@40hz You're welcome

There aren't that many that are in very active development, part of the market has been taken away by online, sync with smart phone type services.

Same sort of obsession, I have used most you can name, pretty sure I have covered 100% of freeware ones ever made. InfoQube comes close and I love it. But got to say I am still looking for something that brings simplicity into accessing notes, snippets of text in one view. I posted about Pigeonhole here before and the likes of Notebox Disorganizer and Treesheets come close too.

I had been playing with a XAMPP install for some sites and had the (idiotic) idea of storing some notes in a local MySQL database. One day I emptied the databases because the so-called testing was finished and guess what I deleted with them?
Can never be too careful and too lucky!

The uprooting thing has been achieved before, facebook itself took on MySpace and killed it and added generations of its own users. Others have existed too.
Friendster was big for a while and I would argue - and this is something nobody mentions - that 'per capita' internet users friendster wasn't much smaller than facebook is today (if that makes sense. May be Orkut too, etc.)

I am 99.9% certain it means when the profile is invisible/zero people
Read last paragraph here for example

Private profiles will be removed, that's what was said I believe. In a way that's not really evil, why have a profile page when it's visible to zero people.
