just a reminder, SC will let you drag and drop images into and out of it's thumbnail panel.

and i think you can pass a filename on commandline when calling SC to have it switch to that image file's directory and load that image -- so that does what you asked for veign, i think.

also, dont forget to use the Save+ button, to save the image with an incremented filename -- useful for preserving originals.

You'll find a screencast of the new SC "Splice" tool command here:

https://www.donation...c/3ds/sc16/sc16.html

The splice tool allows you to splice out horizontal or vertical regions, like banners.  Good for removing ad regions in screenshots, etc.

you don't get it yet.. i have a google 4CF-A contract.
that means i am paid to bad mouth them and drum up fear and paranoia.
then when they are ready they will broadcast a special transmission that only my left molar tooth receiver can detect, and i will flip positions and proclaim loudly that i was wrong and they are really the most nicest good hearted, not at all motivated by profit company ever created -- and in the process convince everyone who had been listening to my rants that they were also wrong about google.

(by the way if you are curious, the 4CF-B contract employees receive the same signal but when they receive it they are tasked with doubling-down on their paranoia and claiming that google is run by aliens from the planet jupiter and that google maps is just a cook book farming map, an in the process convincing the public that only the clinically insane don't like google).

First rule of real system-level product development: "Eat your own dogfood."

no, first rule is infiltrate the market as deeply and broadly as possible, even if you lose money on the effort.
rule two is de-legitimize the competitor's product and soften up the market.
rule three is roll out your alternative product.
god i feel like a paranoid nut.

« Last post by mouser on June 01, 2010, 10:54 AM »
JayIsGames.com has one of the best sites for discovering and reading about casual flash games.. And they put on an amazing developer competition.  Here's the latest, with an August 1 deadline.

As usual, I'd love to see some DC'ers enter something and I'll pledge a rare and beautiful DC game designer mug to anyone who has an entry entered into the contest.

You may use any browser-based technology platform you are comfortable with (Flash, Unity, Shockwave, Javascript/HTML5, etc.)... We are calling for entries designed to incorporate this theme: SANDBOX.  1st place: $1,000, Armor Games Awards: $500 - to each of the top 3 Flash games for a non-exclusive license to appear at Armor Games.  Audience Prize: $500.  The deadline for entries is
Sunday, August 1, 2010.

Paul,

when you cut and paste so much of a linked article i find it just makes it hard for me to tell what's going on and if you are adding your own comments, etc.

when linking to an off-site article, i think the best thing is quote one paragraph and then give the link to the original -- let people read the text on the original site -- no need to copy and paste so much.

feels like just another excuse to pile on microsoft and try to grab more marketshare for themselves.  more and more it feels like google is playing the role of benevolent mafia boss -- helping out as long as it grabs its cut off the top of every deal, muscling in to every business anyone tries to set up, and using whatever means it has to in order to push the competition out of its way.  microsoft did this kind of stuff in it's prime and wasn't nearly as good at disguising it as google is, but it feels to me like we are trading one mafia boss for another, and i'm not happy about it.

i resisted LCDs for a long time.  i can't comment on image quality.  what i can say is that the benefit in terms of savings in desk space, especially when you have 2 to 4 monitors, is impossible to overestimate.  it is one reason i would never go back to CRTs at any price.

The most important rite of passage is creating an application for the NANY event.
Another rite of passage is releasing an open source program.

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 :: Entry Ideas
« Last post by mouser on May 31, 2010, 12:24 PM »
I have another idea i'd like to work with someone on for NANY..

This one is a windows-specific application, a kind of simple framework for providing a very simple kiosk-like interface for browsing and switching between different full screen applications that are treated like plugins.

The basic idea is to provide a user interface for a wall-mounted touchscreen lcd picture frame like computer.  Users will be able to configure and switch between fullscreen "modules" easily.

These "modules" are just normal fullscreen applications, screensavers, or webpages -- so we're not talking writing some whole new complicated system.  But there will be a fair amount of work making a nice looking interface for selecting modules, and making a neat little API that applications can use to make themselves available to the program, and i expect there will be a few cases where some tricky windows API stuff is needed to get this kiosk overseer application to behave elegantly and ensure that all launched processes feel and behave like proper kiosk applications (i.e. like a screensaver and suitable for display in a picture frame).

Living Room / Sprocket Rocket: Very cool flash physics game
« Last post by mouser on May 31, 2010, 10:18 AM »
Here's a physics game that should appeal to the tool-makers among you.  You control this round little ship and have to create custom tools to attach to it in order to solve puzzles.  What's special is how open-ended the tools are -- you create tools basically by drawing them out.  I'm not sure i've seen this done quite so well before.

Jibz (DC member #2) has some irc logs with some early discussions of the idea of dc that could be funny to post.

One thing i remember distinctly is how supportive people from ShellCity.net freeware site were; both the site admin Bob, and the members of the site who came over and donated and encouraged the concept from day 1.
