I think this came up before but i can't find the original post..

I'm thinking it would be better for us to merge this Complaints and Compliments section into the Living Room and General Software sections.

Here's my reasoning:
  • All things being equal I think it's better to have fewer sections, resulting in less divided attention, especially if the information is of general interest.
  • Having a specific Complaints section feels like it's only a matter of time before we have to start dealing with people feeling like their company is being unfairly singled out and accused of something they aren't guilty of.  I think it's important that this forum be a place where people can complain and call out bad practices, but i just think having a specific section for it means we would have a higher responsibility to try to objectively assess claims, since they will basically be sitting here on the front page of the section for long periods of time.  I can see how a company would feel like it was unfair if we left up a negative comment for a long time that they felt was unfounded.
  • Maybe a better way to say it is that having a specific section for complaints seems to elevate the complaint to a higher level, one that i'm not sure is appropriate.

Thoughts?

Please keep in mind -- I don't want to discourage anyone from posting complaints about companies -- i think we can serve an important role in keeping companies honest and behaving well.  I just think we might be better off without a specific separate forum devoted to this.

FlipSuite and Flipbook Printer / Re: stack error?
« Last post by mouser on June 18, 2010, 11:19 AM »
one thing that would probably work is using a free tool that will "re-encode" the avi from the old olympus, and save it into a more generic compatible avi format.

yes, but you need to use a 3rd party pdf printer driver for that.. there are some free ones though i can't think of the names.

I've never heard of that error, but it sounds like it might be having a problem with the video file.. is there a way for you to save it i a different avi format, or convert it to a different avi encoding.  apologize if that doesn't make much sense.

i actually have a newer version of flipbook printer that may be able to load it but it's not quite ready to release.

url snooper watches traffic as it goes between your normal applications and the internet -- it does not modify the communication in any way and communication doesn't pass through it on the way to the site.. so url snooper should not have any effect on the processes you are using.

might be nice if the Speed column could display the speed in terms of how many minutes it takes to run a mile.
(e.g. if you run 5 miles in 40 minutes, you have a 8 minute mile).

Screenshot Captor / Re: Large black border
« Last post by mouser on June 16, 2010, 04:59 AM »
ok, that makes sense.. it sounds like the Copy Image/Object to Clipboard is not properly handling transparency. will try to fix.

it's good to hear that merging background transparency works.. and that is exactly what should happen AUTOMATICALLY when you save a jpg.

ok so let me clarify, i think i might understand:

you aren't using the menu "File -> Save As" to save your jpg that is black bordered, you are copying the image to the clipboard then pasting into another application and saving?

or.. can you explain exactly how you get from the SC image to the black bordered image and black bordered jpg?

I'm not sure i understand the question.. There is only one version of URL Snooper and this is it's official website.

that's strange!
it sounds like you've done a pretty good job of identifying the details of the problem.. but im not sure from your description exactly what is happening.

when you save as jpg, it can't save true transparency, so it should "flatten" the shadow and save a gradual looking transparency that is merged with the canvas background color.

can you try this -- before you save as jpg, use the menu toolbar item "Objects->Flatten Background Transparency" and then save it.

also, maybe you could attach:
1) png save of screenshot that has this phenomena
2) jpg save version
3) self capture of the SC window with this image, where it shows ok (trigger via toolbar menu "Capture -> Capture Image of Screenshot Captor Window").

Have to agree with you 40hz, both the original and remake are fantastic movies.
"Chiller Theater" used to come on tv at my grandparents house, and even just seeing the intro, makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up -- terrifying stuff for a kid of my age.  Here's the intro, from youtube:

anyone who has gone looking for the perfect program to achieve a certain task, and then been asked a week later by a friend why we didn't like certain of the programs we tried and rejected, would instantly see the value in this.

i find it VERY hard to remember why i've rejected certain alternatives when engaged in a search for something.. and i think the idea of keeping a brief record of why each alternative in a search was reject is a great idea.

..you'd have to run a guaranteed clean version of the hash-checker, not the copy from the usb stick.

i think this is where we diverge into the superspy paranoia vs real world risks.

while it is conceivably possible that someone could write custom malware that would infect and modify the hash checker to trick it into reporting fake hashes, this is just so unlikely as to make it not worth worrying about (you could also make that quite hard by putting some protection on the program itself).

so yes, the malware could infect the hash checker (though you could do some stuff to make that hard), but it's not going to make it report false hashes, so it would still do it's job of reporting an infection.

and after it did, you would not trust the files on that thumbdrive to be safe any more, as they would have been trojaned, including the hash checker.. but that's ok, the point is to DETECT the infection.

Unicode Image Maker / Re: Additional Feature Request

i'll add it to my todo list but it's not easy to do using the current code, and as you may be the only person on the planet using this tool.. it's pretty low on the priority scale :)
16122
you could just use a program that can calculate hashes of the files.

actually that would make a very nice portable app -- a program which when run scans the drive and creates hashes of all files found, and compares to previous set of saved hashes, reporting any differences and new files.  bonus if it also did this on boot records.  goal would be to make it super easy to use with no real options, just run it and wait for it to tell you nothing has changed most of the time.. or report on new files.  on rare malware infection it will report the changing of some files.  (be smart if it flagged changed exe's more dramatically than changed .txt files).

could be extremely useful for portable file use.

in fact, it might very well make sense to run it immediately after inserting a drive to see if any malware wants to try to infect any executables on your usb, kind of like a honeypot.

this would make a great NANY 2011 project for someone..
16123
f0dder beat me to the punch regarding worrying about usb drive being infected. it's still doable you just have to be careful of it -- i wonder if anyone has written up some tricks and techniques for safely doing such things.
