What's the Best? / Re: PDF Cataloger - Any Suggestions
« Last post by rjbull on July 14, 2010, 09:09 AM »
Could you just use FILE_ID.DIZ descriptions, which are understood by various file managers, e.g. Total Commander?  And/or, use a standard file cataloguing app such as Disk Explorer Professional, now freeware?  Or could you just use File Hound 3.2 (or the earlier Hound 1.0), both free, for searching for text in PDFs?

If you want unlimited, I don't see how you expect to create a unique hotkey combo for each destination file.

Could you do it sort-of WordStar-style, with two keys, so that you pressed say Ctrl-0 to Ctrl-9, and each one popped up its own independent list of 0-9 + A-Z channels/bins/whatever you call them?  Hard to keep track of what was supposed to go where, but fairly easy to gain a lot of targets for not many hotkeys.

Do you mean automatically, or only saves when you ask it to?  Do you mean plain text, or formatted as the original HTML?

Yes, but joel2007 asked about Revo Uninstaller Pro, the commercial version of Revo Uninstaller.  If I recall correctly, Gizmo's review deals only with the free version (Revo Uninstaller), not the commercial (Pro) version.

Gizmo's review does only deal with free software, but joel2007's post is confusing.  He's asking for a comparison of Revo Uninstaller Pro, which is payware, with "other free Uninstaller software," as if it were free.
1605
Haven't go anything more helpful to add  :(  I was expecting to set it up with a batch file that would save the end of old log, save the end of new log, diff, then delete the old tail and rename the new tail as the old tail.  But, I agree that you wouldn't know where to cut the tail from.  I assumed you'd have to use tail because diff wouldn't be able to cope with files that were in use and constantly added to.  If you could find a diff that coped with log files that were presumably locked, you could use it directly.

I don't know if ExamDiff Pro, the visual diff I use, can do this, but I can't see it in the Help file.  Maybe one of the others can, like Beyond Compare, the favourite on DC?
1606
Could you:

1) use a "tail" utility to save the last n lines
2) when you want to check what's changed, use "tail" again to save the new tail
3) use a "diff" utility to see the difference?

The UnxUtils project on SourceForge contains command-line versions of both "tail" and "diff."

I want to know Revo Uninstaller Pro compare with other free Uninstaller software?

joel2007, check Gizmo's Best Free Program Un-installer review where Revo Uninstaller comes out top.

I don't like the hardware activation, and you need to install it, but the free version is still portable.

People are reporting stuck screens during the purchasing process, but it seems to work eventually.

Thanks for the subtle hints!  :)
:)

Your idea of having the cursor automatically selecting the last opened file is an interesting one. It's actually something I tinkered with in early development stages but then moved on to what I feel are more effective ways to get to the files you want.

What I'm really suggesting is a quick way of getting the next file from a list.

I'm actually working on keyboard navigation and hotkey functions right now and making excellent progress.  :)

Glad to hear it!

Listary looks very interesting. A great find. I'm going to give it a try.

I found it on discount at Bits du Jour.  This is a hint.  :)  I also bought a number of software licenses via DonationCoder discounts.  This is another hint.  :)

The Free Version doesn't require installation so could be used as a portable application.

It would be nice if all versions could be portable; I realise this may not be possible.

The Professional Elite Version of Buzz Folders remembers your recent files.

I'm English, and unemployed.  The Professional Elite Version of Buzz Folders costs £36, which is too much, the more so if the licence is per-computer, which is how I read your EULA.  If it were portable and the license allowed home computer plus portable, that would be nice.

However, it looks like I didn't explain what I meant well enough.  The screenshot below is a common-or-garden File Open dialog in Adobe Reader.  You'll notice that the cursor is on a file.  What I wanted was a dialog box extender that would re-open the File Open dialog with the cursor on the same file, or, optionally, on the next file down (or up) in the list.  I admit I got fixated on this because of a particular task I used to have to do at work.  Now I'm work-free the task has gone away, but the idea is still one I'd like considered (or definitively shot down as completely silly).

list of files displayed below the folder buttons and the last file you opened will be at the top of the list. Opening that file is as simple as pressing the "GO" button.

Perhaps you could implement what I mean by allowing Up Arrow or Down Arrow to scroll through the list from that file, though it might mean re-reading the file list.

As others have mentioned above, keyboard operation is essential, so I'm pleased to note your commitment to it.

At present I use Listary (Pro version).  Its main focus is on making it easier to find files in well-populated folders by improved searching, but it supplies most of my (simple) dialogue box extender needs through its Favorite Folders feature.  A nice advantage is that it's portable.  Is there/will there be a portable version of Buzz Folders?

One irritation I used to have at work was having to keep opening then closing a series of files, in turn, in Acrobat Reader.  I would have dearly liked a dialogue box extender that remembered the last file I used, and when I opened the Open File dialogue next time, would put the cursor on the same file, or, come to think of it, optionally on the next file in sequence.  Does Buzz Folders do anything like that?

i've had a quick install and look around AJC Active Backup.

it looks less configurable than Filehamster, in that the settings appear to be global (i could be wrong). with FH you can set up different watches each with a different method of watching/deleting/etc.

As far as I can see, you're right.  That is, global include and exclude filespecs, but not per-folder specs.

AJC Active Backup has been mentioned quite favourably in several DC threads before, e.g. Quoting tranglos:
FileHamster (more advanced options, more resource usage) or AJC Active Backup (fewer options, much leaner)
[Edit]
This thread looks particularly interesting:
alternative to filehamster?
[/Edit]

I bought my license on one of the Bits du Jour special offers.  I only looked at File Hamster in its most recent BdJ offer, and sensibly or otherwise, was instantly put off on seeing .NET.

AJC does not show specific file type icons - FH does. it's nice being able to identify files by icon type.

That wouldn't kill it for me, but I agree it's often nice to see them.

perhaps the deal breaker: AJC appears to use a database to store the versioned files in, whereas FH uses individual same file type version backups - so you can access each version with your default programs. you'll need AJC to access your versions in it's database.

Yes, it does appear to use its own database format.  If you look inside a .aja archive, you see something like this:
AJC Revision Archive Version=1.1 End FileName=c:\NoInst\GreatNews\greatnews.ini

At least you know which archive is which as the .aja extension is added to the base filename+extension, viz.:
greatnews.ini.aja
greatnews_upgrade.ini.aja
license.txt.aja

I would prefer it to use a standard format, but if it uses some kind of RAR-like solid archive, maybe it has to use its own system.  Anyhow, I have a license to use AJC Active Backup so I should be set.

FH will also store the backup/archive within the originals folder - if you like. this can be handy when moving files and their backups to elsewhere on your drives.

I find it a minor annoyance that AJC Active Backup saves its files in a mirror directory structure.  Because Total Commander can't ban paths, I generally have to navigate over the AJC Active Backup tree in order to reach the real target location.

Something similar happened to me, sometimes to the extent that it became rather painful to take a deep breath again.

I had to go to a speech therapist a few years ago (I'd lost my voice thanks to a cold, and it didn't really come back).  She was particularly keen on teaching "low breathing," meaning breathing from the diaphragm, as opposed to this shallow  "upper chest" breathing.  She said babies and small children don't have this problem, they breathe naturally, but it develops as you get older.  It seems to be correlated with the sedentary occupation of using a computer, but I don't remember it happening when I was reading, only during computer use.

Not quite as you want - ArsClip, which is both free and portable, has a single hotkey, Control-Shift-Z by default, that pops up a list of clips where each clip is numbered and has the icon of the program it was clipped from.  Entering the number pastes the clip.

[Edit]
If you Enable the Tooltip Popup in Configuration, you can move up and down the clip list with Ctrl-Shift-X and Ctrl-Shift-C (again by default), pasting the clip you want, when you get to it, by pressing Shift on its own.  But, that's getting a fair way away from the method I understand you to use now with Ditto.

But, would you, really?  You run a PC support business.  Isn't that a de facto Windows support business?

  • any sort of drivers that work with all-in-one network based printers from major players (and in particular Canon)

Which Canon MFPs do you like?

Like I said in my earlier post, Helmet, now reinstated at JimmyTheFork.com:
Helmet
Clicks the save button on any program.

Written during a time my computer was unstable, this program has helped my dozens of times from losing work.
Otherwise, you'd need something like an AHK script to send Ctrl-S at regular intervals to a list of specified programs.

if you want a DOS prompt in the current directory, you'd have to go up a level then highlight the one you've just come from, because you don't get Open Command Window Here if you right-click on a file.

You can also Shift-Right Click on a blank space within the current folder

Yes, tried it, you're right.  Thanks!  :)

you know, i went back to the [EverNote] website...I didn't see anything about the standalone version.  I think there's a misunderstanding somewhere.  it's still a web only product.  It has a frontend that you can use on your PC, but it's still a web only product.  Maybe I'm mistaken, but I haven't seen anything to indicate otherwise.  And I didn't see any update to the old 2.2 version.

Thanks for checking.  I'd have been interested in an update to 2.2, heralding a return to a business model that I as a customer could live with.  No such luck, evidently   :(

Windows 7 (and Vista) already has this built in by following these steps:

1. Select the directory so that it is highlighted
2. Hold Shift and Right Click the directory
3. Select Open Command Window Here

Just tried it, and it works on Vista Home Premium in a user account with UAC On.  But if you want a DOS prompt in the current directory, you'd have to go up a level then highlight the one you've just come from, because you don't get Open Command Window Here if you right-click on a file.
