If your wife really wants to trigger any notetaking software with her  mouse, well... why not install StrokeIt for mouse gestures and configure it to send a certain hotkey? Should be easy to use for you and you could configure it for her.

And as a note taking program, you could also try the free version of EverNote? I know I keep suggesting Evernote...  :-[ even if I'm actually finding  some (absent) features kind of annoying these days, but... For a complete beginner, the key concepts are very easy to understand : just open it (ctrl+alt+N -- have and type. What you wrote before is before in the scroll, search as you type. Plus, it's very mouse-friendly. And as she gets used to it, she might want to use the built in templates, categories with keyword filters, etc.

Edit : and evernote is pretty good to clip web pages or anything. It has a "universal clipper".

Yes, it's nice.
Perfection will come with time! It's already a nice feature. I don't expect people to intensely work with their HTML export anyway...
As for your "expand.js" for FF, I wouldn't know. Anybody??

Works very well. I like the "(...)". It's great, Pierre.

And BTW, the images DO show. Sorry.  :-[
What happened is that they weren't fully downloaded in SQLNotes' database itself when I tried the HTML export.

Find And Run Robot / Re: [Bug report?] farr - short freeze every 6 launch/close

Warning to those using Comodo : if you don't want to experience slowdowns and freezes, You have to make the choice AT INSTALLATION TO NOT ACTIVATE DEFENSE+.

If you decide to deactivate it only after activating it at install, it WILL NOT work -- you'll still experience slowdowns, and you'll have to uninstall Comodo and reinstall it (and chose not to activate defense+). Weird, I know.
Same thing if you decide to ulteriorly activate Defense+ and later deactivate it again (like I just did) : if you try to deactivate after activating it, it WILL NOT cancel farr's slowdowns or freezes. It's a bit like if it would remain there, doing nothing valuable, but still slowing down everything (i tried rebooting, etc. to no avail. Only uninstalling & reinstalling works).

Summary : forget about defense+ altogether if you want to have a running farr without freezes.

Immediately upon receipt of my new Gateway Vista laptop, I installed AVG anti-virus.
It runs better than the preinstalled McCrapAfee.

Thanks for the feedback.
For now, I installed the free Avast on my parent's laptop. I still haven't made up my mind about the backup solution...

And if your router is supported, here's exactly what you need to do.

Actually, your router might NOT be supported, depending on its version number.
v1.0 IS supported. v2 is NOT.

I guess your basically speaking of QoS (Quality of Service). I don't know if your router supports it, but if not you could probably try to flash your router with the "open source" DD-WRT router firmware : www.dd-wrt.com

hardware compatibility list (your router seems to be supported)  : http://www.dd-wrt.co...rted_Devices#Linksys

Wiki manual : http://www.dd-wrt.co.../index.php/Main_Page

There might be better options than DD-WRT. Have a look at this article : http://lifehacker.co...r+router-with-tomato

Edit : Deozan and f0dder were quicker than me...  :-[  but... maybe you'll still find something useful

It works well. The only thing that doesn't show are the images (I used your SQLNotes tutorial as a test document). But I still haven't tried it extensively, of course.  :)

I knew that the minute I added this option, someone would ask to be able to collapse the HTML section. It is more complicated, but of course feasible. Will do  :-[

well, of course, you don't have to... Maybe it's just me, but it just seems that the HTML text might "obfuscate" the outline, depending on how much there is...  :)

Trip was outstanding. City is beautiful, B&B was charming and the food was memorable (3 service breakfast and lunch at Le Saint-Amour, miam miam). Now fasting!

 ;D Good to here that!!!

Well, it looks good to me! Especially if it's still possible to expand-collapse the hierarchy.

But would it be possible to also collapse the "HTML note" inside each item, maybe with an extra button/link saying "see text"... Would be possible? That would probably be the best (depending on how big is the item list, and how much text/image is in each item's "HTML pane").

PS : Hope your trip went nicely!  :)

Edit : is there an option in the menus, apart from the toolbar, for the HTML export?
nevermind... I just saw it...

I'm exactly in the same situation. And I want to retry TrueCrypt... it's just that it left me with such a bitter taste last time I installed it (previous laptop) : unsolvable BSODs -- well, the solution was to uninstall TrueCrypt. BSODs tend to really traumatize me... Especially that my current Dell gave me BSODs for a full year, every single week.

Thank you very much Lashiec. That's exactly the kind of info I was looking for.

So, all (well, most) things considered, security wise I believe they should be ok from what you said. They're really not heavy users.

I just checked Vista's backup utility and it's pretty *pathetic* -- I'm not even trying to compare it to Leopard's Time Machine, for instance... I'll have to think of an easy way for them to get into the habit of backing up. Something very simple, but still efficient and robust.

Living Room / Vista : included backup and security software
« Last post by Armando on January 20, 2008, 12:16 PM »
This is a simple question for those currently running Vista. My parents just bought a laptop. I'd like to help them a bit but I'm no Vista expert/user. Therefore, before I uselessly send them looking for extra stuff, I'd like to know what Vista is already capable of, in terms of :

- backup (imaging, incremental...)
- Security (firewall, antivirus)

As it is, is it enough for someone who's NOT very computer litterate to safely browse the net, and backup files efficiently?

Thanks!

PS : any other tangential recommendations will also be appreciated!

General Software Discussion / Re: Sprankle Character Map
« Last post by Armando on January 19, 2008, 08:12 PM »
It's more reliable than Sprankle -  it sends the character to the clipboard. But if you have a lot of characters to search in, Sprankle's "search as you type" feature seems better.

See alsothis thread for another take on Special characters menu.

Very interesting (long, yes) read. To some extent, some of what the author describes could apply to art/aesthetic research (can't speak of other fields)...

Here's a modified quote :

This is not just prejudice. It is rational mistrust. Academics, as we've seen, have no incentive to build [art/aesthetic ideas or hypotheses] that's actually relevant, and every incentive to [develop "theories"] that appears to be relevant. They have every incentive to overpromote, and no incentive at all to build an actual user base. In fact, an actual user base is an enormous drag for [an art] researcher, because it demands actual support, which does not advance the researcher's career at all.

OK, that one was easy...  :)

I actually like Sprankle (more intuitive and usable than Windows' character map). The only problem -- as you already read -- is that it doesn't work with all applications. One remedy would be to modify the script to send the selected characters to the clipboard. Since the app is open source (in c++ I believe) anybody with C++ knowledge could propbably modify the code.
1622
Here's another potentially useful (??) plugin idea, inspired by Sprankle.

Sprankle[/b][/url] is a handy keyboard activated character map. Find the character you need with leaving the keyboard.

Like I said in a post in this other thread : couldn't Sprankle be linked to farr : type the letters in farr to show all the different related characters, and selecting the character in the farr result window sends it to the clipboard. It should be possible to make a few mollifications to Sprankle to have it play nicely with farr...

What do you think?

General Software Discussion / Re: Sprankle Character Map
« Last post by Armando on January 19, 2008, 03:19 PM »
Very ice idea.

So what does it NOT work in? Works with everything I've tried.

Doesn't work in MS Word, OpenOffice.org, EverNote and probably many others.

Sending the character to the clipboard would definitely be a better way. It's an Open Source app, so I guess that anyone who understands the script (C++ ?) could add this feature by default. Anybody wants to do it?

PS : It could probably even be linked to farr : type the letters in farr, selecting the character sends it to the clipboard. Would it be possible to make a few mofications to make it play nicely with farr? Would make a nice plugin...

EDIT : added this as a plugin idea for farr
