General Software Discussion / Re: Collectorz.com... again!
« Last post by Josh on March 22, 2009, 06:08 AM »
Plus, like I said, DVD Profiler has been doing the whole "Self-Maintained" DB thing for years so theirs is pretty well developed. I wouldn't have minded collectorz doing this, however, they should have had it at the start and not decided to just "cross the streams", old ghostbusters ref, I know,  with the existing user base being hooked on "Search for what you want with various sources".

I think this post says it all. I am taking screen caps of the posts I can now so as to prove collectorz is deleting posts which display negativity towards their products.

This is exactly how I feel. Companies which ignore what users want will not last very long.

General Software Discussion / Re: UltraEdit for Linux? Could it (finally) be?
« Last post by Josh on March 21, 2009, 08:31 AM »
Software moving to *nix is nice, but I do not think every application will do so or will benefit as such. The problem I see with linux is that most software is freeware, or F/OSS if you will. As such, if a payware application moves over, it has the added disadvantage of having users say "I have x hundred apps that are free and do the same thing, why should I PAY for this?". UE Might be a nice editor, although updated far too frequently with MAJOR revisions, but I do not see it making a dent unless it either lowers its price to cater to the "All Software Should Be Free" crowd, or opens its source so a spin-off could be made.

Please forgive me if my post sounded like an attack. It was not intended that way. I was also referring to CLEARMEM as that is what I thought I saw. So for that I apologize. I will make a longer post detailing why i feel these tools are a waste tomorrow when I have a clearer head (long day at work).

Process programs exist for another reason. If you are referring to stuff like Process Explorer, then yes, you missed the big thing these programs offer. They make system management that much easier because you can get path names of executable files, find out kernel usage of applications, and various other statistics about the OS.

Clearmem and memory utilities like that claim big performance increase yet all they do is force windows to page all data to disk (the swap file). This then slows down the system when running processes have to re-read said data from disk. It's an old argument which might have held true through NT4, but since Win2K/XP, it has no valid purpose in the modern computing era. Unless of course you are app103 and running Windows ME ;-)

From what it says on the forums, yes. I do not have one so I cannot comment but from what I see on the forums.

clearmem is a tool left over from the OLD NT Days where memory management wasn't a BIG issue since the most ram any system had was between 256 and 512MB. Microsoft has cleaned up it's game in that department and Windows does a fine job on it's own. I also label any software like this to be shamware.

Informational link. I use it and think it is a great program. Unlike collectorz, they started their own DB from the get-go instead of doing the bait-and-switch. I have successfully converted and done so very easily. An easy export from collectorz using UPC codes and then importing into this program is very painless. The images are high quality and the info complete. I whole-heartedly endorse this application. Two shams up!

I was thinking the same thing. There are so many freeware and superior editors on linux that I do not think a serious user would even consider ultraedit. Plus, from what I hear and have experienced with a buddy of mine, getting a new key from this company everytime a major version is released is a pain if you are a lifetime user.

I was more hoping for a hotkey solution as I hate using the mouse. I use the mouse as little as possible. I will try this, none-the-less. Thanks :)

General Software Discussion / [SOFTWARE]: Multiple Monitor Support Question
« Last post by Josh on March 19, 2009, 05:01 PM »
I am looking for an application which allows, via hotkey, the ability to send the active window to the other monitor in a dual monitor setup. Preferrably freeware, but commercial software will not be turned down.

I have tried ultramon, but it gives me issues on vista with windows being forced "on top" with no apparent way to disable it. I have found myself having to uninstall this application for that very reason so I am looking for alternatives.

Any thoughts?

General Software Discussion / Re: Official players - What is the big deal?
« Last post by Josh on March 15, 2009, 04:31 PM »
I am not saying make any of these your DEFAULT player, I am saying why go through all of the other hoops just to get another player to play them? I rarely find a video, unless it's on a video developer (I.E., the old AlienSong video) where they use quicktime for the size of file it produces relative to the quality achieved. As I said, when the alternatives worked for browser-based media, they did ok but often times resulted in various problems.

General Software Discussion / Re: Quicktime only available with iTunes

The page is back to normal, so everyone can "enjoy" QuickTime without the burden of iTunes :P

Thankfully, we may be able to ditch the entire thing once Win7 comes along as it now has native support for the MOV container (the trailers from apple.com I've tested with in build 7057 all worked just fine without any 3rd party codecs installed) :)

I smell a lawsuit!

General Software Discussion / Official players - What is the big deal?
« Last post by Josh on March 15, 2009, 04:04 PM »
I have a question for everyone. Ever since getting my wife her laptop for school, I have come to the realization that most of these OFFICIAL media players for various formats are very wildly over-attacked for their abilities. For example, quicktime and real player. My biggest gripe with real player was from back in the day when it used to startup several programs and alert me with these advertisements. Given the recent trend, they have seriously cleaned up their act. I have no problems with them at all now. The same goes for quicktime. I installed it and after disabling the apple software update service, I had no problems with it. The players are really well thought out and function great. They have seemless integration with various web browsers and serve their purpose. Now, I do not use any of them as a default player for my various media files, I use KMPlayer for that, but I do rely on their players for browser-based playback. Heck, real and apple have both included ways for me to save various media files without having to resort to rippers such as streambox.

Now, that said, I have tried the alternatives such as "Real alternative" and QTLite. Both are OK, but both have caused me to have to reinstall them because some component became unregistered in my system or just wasn't playing right after a browser update or other software update. The default official players, however, have never failed since my recent experiment over the last few months. This leads me to the question, are these players as horrid as they once were to most? Or is it the old "They started out evil and will remain so" reputation that most larger corporations get?

Comments? Questions? Concerns?

patteo: I would advise to stay away from buy.com. The few times I have landed at their site for purchase, the experience was awful. Stock indicators that didn't represent real levels, inability to provide an estimated ship or new shipment arrival date, poor customer service which results in unanswered phone calls or sitting on hold for 30 minutes or waiting 4 days for an email response.

Stay away. What type of purchase are you looking for? I swear by amazon. As an Amazon Prime member, I order all of my stuff through them. That is how I got free shipping on a 140lb treadmill just recently

That is my biggest objection. I could care less if IE is coupled with windows. Hell, it makes my job that much easier on a reinstall so that I do not have to download a browser. People whine and whine about IE being included, but in the end, it is the easiest to use and most compatible browser out there. There is a reason the gov't uses it as it's primary platform for web applications. Hell, citrix metaframe still does not interact nicely with opera (but then again, what third party code does) and firefox is only just recently getting it to work.

But yes, as I said above, I am in full agreement with nosh. Why should Microsoft cater to Opera and give them free advertising? Opera should be forced to pay them for a spot in the, if it ever comes to be, browser selection screen.

I almost hope this movement fails because it will open up a pandoras box. What's to say that media player giants don't demand the same? Or calculator developers, or file browsers/shell replacements? Microsoft created IE as well as Windows, I see no reason they should NOT be allowed to incorporate one product into another. The end goal is ease of use for the end user, and as such, including IE makes it easier for the user to "just work". The average user does not want 200 choices when they start their machine or, god forbid, have to reinstall. Why do you think Microsoft slipstreamed the install process?

It's a good deal, but, I can't stand the zinio reader. My first experience with them was with the maxpc digital edition and the software reader is horrid. Hopefully it has improved since the time I used it 2 years ago :-/
