Thanks, f0dder, but...  Of course I must first pardon me for having used the wrong words, indexing and scanning are not the same. Sorry! And then I ask: How fast is this "indexing speed: 1 GB per hour", compared to other documents'_content indexers (if there are any)?

Compared to dtSearch, X1, and Archivarius it is very slow, though I can't give you numbers to back this up. Archivarius is (initially) the slowest of the bunch WRT creating a fresh index. I'd say it's doing more like 10-12 GB an hour and it's dog slow compared to X1. dtSearch is in the middle - does about 40GB an hour (based on My Documents, which is about 60GB being scanned in about an hour and a half by dtSearch and in about 5 hours by Archivarius. X1 seems to take about 30 minutes!

I have a licence for EditPad Pro and highly recommend it. It has many nice features, as tranglos outlines above. I can't put my finger on what it is about it, but I like working in it infinitely better than UltraEdit (for which I have a lifetime licence  :o If pressed, I guess it is a combo of the layout, feature set, and the icons are more up to date looking...

Interesting, Curt  It looks similar to dtSearch, which I have installed on my XP machine. I won't be checking this out (have Archivarius, X1, and dtSearch installed along with SearchGT, Search Everything, LineByter, and FileLocator Pro, not to mention a host of GREP tools and File Managers that search as well...) but am interested in any real-life experiences anyone might have to report.

Exactly what I do, iphigenie - the Yiggles are pointless because if you hold out long enough you'll be offered the upgrade for the cost of a move ticket.

What's annoying me about Ashampoo is the bloat that is creeping into a lot of their applications and the fact that there is so much duplication of features across their product line.

Again, like you, the exeption for me is the Burning Studio.

I had to wonder if the users Outertech support, SKA, and cyberdiva were affilitaed with this program.

Outertech Support is - and has acknowledged so elsewhere in this thread. I'm sure that neither SKA nor cyberdiva are affiliates, though.

Thanks Carol - sounds like that is the way forward, then. If I have to order the media, I'll wait for next month as I'll be a student in Canada (in addition to the UK) as of January 5!

Heh, heh - I only use Ashampoo Uninstaller to scan my registry before and after installing Giveawayoftheday software...

No offer of an upgrade for me (still a "golden" boy, like you). First I'd heard of version 6 was reading this thread! I am annoyed, too, as I only upgraded to 5 about two months ago  >:( Still, I never really use it... so don't care. I just have to be sure not to upgrade to 6  ;D

Ouch!

So... the upgrade to Vista Ultimate 64-bit, as I understand it, should download as an iso. Legalities aside, this *should* allow me to do a clean install of Vista 64-bit over my 32-bit version of Vista Home Premium, no? The upgrade paths that they list on the Windows website indicate that from a licensing perspective one cannot upgrade from a 32-bit version to a 64-bit version... However, Windows Secrets and other bloggers have advertised with abandon the fact that it is possible to buy upgrade versions of Vista and use them to do clean installs. The legal aspects of this are murky...

Of course, I have Windows Server 2008 64-bit already BUT I'll need to spend much, much more than $70 to buy versions of various software that I want to run under it that WILL run under it (ie I need Server versions, which are "dear", to say the least).

Thoughts?

They are not all that great, but they are somehow still quite good at the same time.

Ah, the dying art of damning with faint praise! Well done, Curt! This morsel, and the rest of your post sum up my feelings about Ashampoo EXACTLY  ;D

I still use Ashampoo Burner and like it a lot. I also use the Uninstaller Suite - have both 2 Platinum and 3 installed. I upgraded to 3 for $9.95 but consider it a waste of money... I also have WinOptimizer 5 installed but, like you, rarely, if ever, use it. I have nothing particularly damning to say about it other than that I don't really trust the tweaks it offers to make on my Vista system...

Remember what the Iraqis did after toppling Saddam's statue? Shoeing is considered the ultimate insult in Arab culture, a sign of contempt.

It's very insulting in Asia as well. I understand the "statement" that the man was trying to make, I'm just not sure that he accomplished anything in making the statement. But then, I'm not Iraqi and can't imagine the Iraqi peoples' frustration. I do begrudge the fact that he appears to have wasted a perfectly good pair of shoes... tut, tut.

Well, as mouser has just pointed out - the IE patch is out. Now I can start comparing Maxthon and Firefox back to back.

General Software Discussion / Re: Collectorz.com... again!
« Last post by Darwin on December 17, 2008, 02:17 PM »
I don't see why this can't be made to work, either. As Josh said, it could have been handled better. I just received a book in the post published in 1967 and had no trouble retrieving its information from within Book Collector 6. Maybe they could have had a big announcement about this change over coming in a future version and stressing the need for their databases to grow, and then letting people opt-in or out of a scheme to be introduced in either a new version or a new build of the current version of the Collectorz catalogue that might see their DVD, book, Comic, etc. searches and results uploaded into the relevant Collectorz database. Don't know what the legal implications of that would be... or the fall-out from disgruntled users contributing to a database that is set to make Collectorz money, but then they're already facing that criticism!

Just a thought.

...unless there's a better mouse than the MX, I need to get that!

Don't get me started (I'll be off - in a blizzard - to buy one given the slightest provocation. Bad for my finances and my marriage  :o ;D)!

I'm sort of happy that this happened. I've been using, and loving Maxthon for years (started using it when it was in beta years ago, version 0.7x) and have tried many times to switch to Firefox. This latest issue has forced me to use it, get to know it, and to bend it to my will. I love it! Only thing I miss are Maxthon's mouse gestures. The add-ins for Firefox are clunky.
1620
At home, I'm using the computer at all hours of the day and night, so there's no consistent time to put the mouse in the cradle.  I can see that becoming a problem.

bingo.

Well... I think what I'd wind up doing is getting into the habit of putting the mouse in the charger whenever I got up to leave my desk. Just add it to the routine that includes, in my case, pushing the keyboard drawer in and turning off the light

wow, I must be lame, I hit him on the first try... I bet I can't do that again. Though now I have something to do while I wait until I have to leave for my finals at school

I saw the video of the actual incident last night - what impressed me the most was the accuracy of the Iraqi reporter's throw! Both attempts were right on target. Not sure of the actual distances involved, but I'm not sure I could have done that  :o
He's probably used to throwing rocks.

While I'm no fan of Bush and find the whole incident a bit funny, I still think it was a wrong thing to do.

Absolutely - don't take my comment the wrong way - I thought it was an idiotic and tacky thing to do (but I'm still impressed by his aim  ;))!

Lifetime licenses that I own (I assume that they are still valid  :o):

...
XYplorer (lifetime license no longer available)
...

XYplorer is still available with a lifetime license, but it's at a higher cost than the standard license.

Ah, you're right, of course! Thanks for clarifying that! BTW, what is DVDFab's policy WRT grandfathering its lifetime licensees? I missed that switch entirely... Of course, they've lowered their price a number of times since I purchased, so paying for upgrades (assuming a 50% upgrade charge) wouldn't be too painful.

I don't have a problem with this at all. As Josh notes, it makes sense from a business perspective. Slysoft seem to be doing the right thing as well - they've announced the change in policy well in advance, are giving cutomers the opportunity to buy lifetime licenses until a specified date, and have pledged to honour those and previously purchased lifetime licenses in the future. This stands in stark contrast to how Collectorz handled a similar decision recently...
