General Software Discussion / Re: 'create Restore Point' question

@bit If you have or can back up your system I would try the PC with all the av disabled/uninstalled.  See if the crashes disappear.  If they go away completely at least you will know what you are up against.

So far I haven't found a "real time shield" type of protection that didn't make my machine act flaky.  But I have not done exhaustive research as I think they are inherently performance robbing.

Hm I tried the key, it seems to work at first, but then it never comes up again under the help menu, it keeps saying register. BTW, the key they provided is the exact same key I was given by on Shareware_on_Sale in January 2015

Startup is slow, really slow, takes several seconds, The fonts are tiny on my hi resolution, it won't respond to Ctrl mousewheel or Ctrl Num+ or any of the usual zoom shortcuts.

And it refuses to open some zip that I have no problem opening in 7-zip, Bandizip, FreeArc and IZArc. Tested the zips in question - they are fine everywhere else but UlitmateZip.

Guess I pass up on this one - got enough archive handlers anyway. But thanks for letting me know.

It is a shame if it functions that poorly.  I only tried extraction via drag and drop.  I am happy with 7-zip so I will just uninstall UZ.

I ran across this giveaway for UZ.  I already registered mine from earlier.  I do not know if it will take the registration as shown here.  But it may.

Miles for President :eusa_dance:

Let the Bumper Stickers, Buttons, and cheapie USB sticks begin!!  Heh heh heh.
1605
I was thinking of running for President of the United States of America myself.

Here is my reasoning:

1) I am qualified.  35+ years of age, born in the U S of A.  This is the shortest list of qualifications for a fairly high paying job with no heavy lifting I am aware of.  Also when running for the job I will be put up at nice hotels with room service and cool looking Secret Service agents around the clock.  No waiting in lines at restaurants for a table.

2) The job comes with living quarters provided rent free.  Included is all maintenance, meals, utilities, health care, servants, haircuts, regular parties with famous people, and a slush fund of several million dollars a year that can be dipped into for odds and ends.  Oh yeah, there is also the salary.  ;)

My platform:

I promise not to cater to special interests unless they make one or more sizable contributions to my PACs, foot the bill for negative ads against my opponents, and/or take me and my family/friends on expensive junkets to top level resorts.  In short, there will be no freeloader vested interests in my entourage.  If they want the number to the Red Phone they have to pay the vig.

No nuclear wars on my watch if I have anything to say about it.  One has to keep in mind that the guy closest to the actual missiles in the silos has the advantage during a pissing contest.  Sometimes these generals can get a MacArthur Complex before a President even knows what the skinny is.

No more deficit/off the books spending.  If companies cannot provide what the American People need via government procurement at an affordable price then all contracts will be terminated with that entity.  I do what I can but companies supposedly in competition in many of these bids are likely appendages of the same holding corporations anyway.  What can a President do?

Free beer for homeless people.  I am so sick of these guys panhandling me for beer money.  If I can get the legislature to pass the Free Beer for the Homeless legislation then we can all say to the panhandlers, "Dude! I know you are getting it for free.  Go away."

I promise if I am elected President that the Presidential Adviser who whispers in my ear to tell me what to do will not be an agent of a foreign power.  He may, however be an agent of the New World Order, in which case there will also be the qualification that he or she is a High School Graduate.  Keep in mind that this educational qualification is even stiffer than the one that does not exist for the President.  But, after all, this guy is telling the President what to do so he should at least understand basic Algebra.

I will not have any "face shooters" as members of my cabinet.  Anyone caught blasting innocent bystanders with shotguns will be immediately terminated from any cabinet position of responsibility.  If on the other hand the Secretary should shoot himself in the foot, well that comes with the territory.

I promise that any brilliant ideas volunteered via email to the White House, if I like them, will be proposed and promoted as if I had thought of them myself.  But hey, at least your input will have some effect.  Way better than simply being ignored as all past Presidents have done.

Speaking of which I will ponder additional items for the agenda.  One never knows when brilliant emails will arrive unsolicited.  ;)

Firefox blocking it too makes it more than Google issue. Unless Firefox use the same list? Last I encountered such issue Firefox wasn't blocking but Chrome was.

I use Web Of Trust on both but I get blocks on sites that show green in search so perhaps it is uBlock Origin, at least in FF.

I wonder, besides dubbing it a 'Rama ship', what would be the generic term for such a ship?

I think Charles Stross just calls them Cylinder Habitats.. at least in the novel Glasshouse

Funny.  I upgraded just a bit before then.  Then again if you have phishing protection enabled in chrome browser and download one of my programs it asks effectively "You sure you want to download that?  Nobody else is."  :)

Back when I bought a UZ license it was only $15.  Nice program.  I think I paid $29 for WinZip so it was half the price with nicer features.  Just a bit of nostalgia.  :)

parsed it to remove the Address: prefix, and 'et voila', working

I forgot about that.  I had to do the same thing in FolderCache for Vista and later.  I think I used StringBetween() to get the string after "Adress:" up to the end of line.

Samsung has just introduced a 15.36 TB SSD in a standard 2.5 inch form factor.  That's over 50% greater capacity than the largest hard disk drive available today.

If Windows 7 sends a Trim command, doe it ever complete?  :)

I would love to see a 512 GB SSD for $20(shipping included.)

Hey I fixed a lot of problems with your program that you made, fixed 2 programs that weren't starting up with windows AND were not starting minimized. So 2 birds with 1 stone. Anyway I ran into an error when I tried to use your app on a VPN service (that doesn't matter) and it tried to run the program in the wrong file path.. Program Files (x86), rather than Program Files which is where the ap actually resides. (see attachment in previous post).

Not sure how to fix the problem other than to move the actual VPN ap into Program Files (x86). I'll let you know if that works, but it's a pretty silly work around...

The folder substitution is due to 32 bit emulation on a 64 bit system.  Try substituting these 64 bit exes and see if things act as expected.  Rename both x64 versions to the original filenames(without the x64 part) or the shortcut maker will not be found.

btw you cannot launch software with higher privilege form software with lower privileges.  That is why launching a service from an ordinary program will not work.  It is a Windows security measure.

Edit:  I have uploaded the zip to my site.  Link is in first post.

Giveaway for Ultimate Zip 7.0.

I have been using 7-zip and am happy with it.  But I used UltimateZip back in the days of version 3.0.  I liked it better than WinZip.  It claims a fully portable mode where you can run from a USB stick.  I haven't really investigated.  All I can say for now is that the download, setuo and registration went without a problem.

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows 10 Automatic Update Reboots

I don't get it. What's so hard about changing the setting to "Notify to schedule restart"?

With that setting, it will never automatically reboot without your explicit permission, either by scheduling a time to restart, or by clicking "restart now."
 (see attachment in previous post)

Is this accomplished by Group Policy?  I am wondering because Windows Installer trumps the user since it runs as System.  I had IE forbidden to run using Group Policy.  All seemed well until some clown explicitly invoked IE during a Windows Installer install.  Up it came.

I thought the thing about 32 bit software was it could not use up all your CPU
(edit// 4 cores)

32-bit software can't use up all your RAM if you have more than 4GB. (And maybe it was even limited to 2GB per application on 32-bit OSes?)

I believe if you are determined to use up all your ram you can configure the memory above 4 GB as disk cache.  But I never tried it.  I'm not sure if you can do ram disk as well.  I never looked into it that deeply.

I read The Variable Man by Philip K. Dick today.  A nice read that may be completed in one sitting.  Also it has the advantage of being a free download, in several formats, from Project Gutenberg.

I noticed the W10 articles on Addictive Tips.

http://www.addictivetips.com/

I hope they make Windows Update usable otherwise it may kill Windows doornail dead.  I'll have to figure out something to do with my time if I am not tweaking Windows.  Then again there's always Linux to turn to.  :)

v40.0 here. is this what you're looking for?
 (see attachment in previous post)https://www.mozilla....g/en-US/firefox/all/

It just seems strange the way the releases come out.  Lately Cyberfox has been days ahead of Firefox on each update.

If I check for update in FF 39.03 it says FF is up to date.  Mozilla.org shows no FF 40.0 stable.  But Snapfiles and Softpedia do.  It gets weirder all the time.

Edit:  Just checked Mozilla again.  Now it has 40.0 for download.  How can they get beat at their own game?  Seems pretty strange.  Check for update is still 40.0 unaware.

I am reading Lies Inc by Philip K. Dick, again.  Mainly due to the lack of interesting paperback SciFi in the Library.  Small paperbacks are easier to lug around.  Of the PKD SciFi books on the shelf this is the one I have read the fewest times.  Perhaps once or twice a couple of decades ago.

I need to find a fresh SciFi author soon.  :)

General Software Discussion / Adobe Flash no McAfee
« Last post by MilesAhead on August 11, 2015, 09:11 AM »
I just updated Adobe Flash to 18.0.0.232.  It looks like McAfee is no longer bundled with the installer.  There was no option to not install McAfee and no listing for McAfee in Programs and Features uninstall list.
