Apparently it doesn't want to just install for me, but the whole computer  :o so the install failed and complained to me...guess I'll be waiting for the next release, but at least I got the name!  ;D

Strange, you would think with their whole BootCamp thing that their pushing they would at least release Official Mac products, especially for users who want to see what OS X is like...

My question is just that...
sence Apple is trying to "combine" into XP with BootCamp, is there a version of Safari for Windows? (Asking because my XP shell this month is FlyakiteOSX)

Dr.Windows / Re: New update suggestions
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on October 15, 2006, 12:37 AM »
Reason:
Ok, sence I can't make ANYTHING in MSPaint (because I just plain stink at it), I have started something else. All the Mac users here should apreceate...(I'm assuming Dr. Windows works on Mac...)

Idea:
Dr. Mac
What I did was just rename the .exe file and I am in the "editing all MS targeted jokes" stage. I couldn't get the Dr. Windows tooltip to change to Dr. Mac (when you hover over the icon on the taskbar...).

How I got the idea:
Because I am Windows XP default skin alergic, I change my shell on a monthly basis. This month I decided to go for FlyakiteOSX for my shell. That got the idea of Dr. Mac going and a whole thing about that.

Well, not exactly sure why, but I guess you need SP2 to update the drivers on my graphics card... :o
so I went with my "hybrid" idea, using the gaming data on the normal partition...
It actually hit some nice FPS on better detail then I used to have it set to...
Anyways, thanks to everyone that posted & tried to help. At least I got it running again  :D

I have 2 computers accessable to me...but sounds like I'll be looking at a Windows "flag" for a long while. Thanks for the info  :)
1608
Great! Thanks for the info  :)

I use some of their programs, but I was talking about Mouser's programs. ScreenshotCaptor is one that I was hoping to be able to fit onto a floppy disk (trying to maintain my grandma's husband's Windows 98 with nothing to go by...).
1610
The thing that would help people use the software at friend's computers/kiosks/etc. would be the ability to chose a download that DOESN'T "install" as it does now, but it just extracts its files to a user-defined location and that would be "installed" onto a jump drive/flash drive/ZIP/floppy/CD/etc. It might also be a good idea to make the files smaller in size, or take out features to allow for floppy installation (yep, I use floppys on occasion).

Note:
(Mouser, I'm posting this here simply because as your programs are the "biggest", they require an install.)

Thanks,

AND SP2 USES A LOT MORE SYSTEM RESOURCES.
1612
Have the game every run okay on your laptop? It *is* a relatively demanding game for a 9600 card when details are set to highest. Also, does the video chip have dedicated memory, or do your system use a unified memory model?

And... why two installations of XP? Does SP2 give any measurable speed impact anywhere? (apart for possibly a bit longer bootup time).

SP2! OMG SP2! I HATE IT (rant rant rant here I come)! OK, from the download time I knew it was bad (I get all my "Microsoft Updates" manually. Security Measure :)). So I get it downloaded. While im downloading I order it on CD. (I am NOT waiting to download this on 3 computers!!!). The installation starts. (I HATE PROGRAMS THAT SAY THAT YOU MUST RESTART YOUR COMPUTER IN ORDER TO GET THE ANNOYING BOX TO GO AWAY!!!) It says I have to restart. So, I'm waiting. You ever look at your new SP2 boot screen if you had Home Edition? They too the Pro boot screen, took out the words "Home Edition" or "Professional" and left you with "Windows XP -bar-"! Then there is this new blue screen that says "Please Wait..." for about 10 lines! Then once you get into XP (finally!) There is this Security Center that they put in. I HONEST TO GOD TRIED TO DELETE ITS EXE FROM THE WINDOWS FOLDER. I SEARCHED AND SEARCHED AND SEARCHED. I WAS INSULTED THE SECOND I SAW THAT. I'M 13 AND I KNOW MORE THEN THE AVERAGE USER (or most users) AND THEY WANT TO PUT A SECURITY CENTER ON MY COMPUTER. AND THEN WHEN I TRY TO RUN GAMES, "AVG is turned off", "Avast is off", "ZoneAlarm is off", "3,000 other things are off". And then, they add a firewall. This is the most retarded addition to an OS I have ever seen. I swear to god...here is my idea of what they do at Microsoft Corp. "OK, here is what we're gonna do. We're gonna add a firewall to all the suckers running Windows XP SP1. Then, it wont do anything. It will be just for show! All in favor? IIIIIIIIIIIIII. All who oppose? _____. Ok." So I actually got so pissed I almost asked Microsoft how to delete the SP2 and still get updates & such.
But those were my 2 cents about SP2 (and not all of the problems with it).

Back to Underground 2 and the SLOW computer.
I play the game in 640x480 or something. No res problems. I played the game ALL the time on it. (I actually used it to "benchmark" my computer. If it went too slow, I tuned up my computer.) And according to the games HORRIBLE graphics detail meter, I used to run it in 1/4 full mode. Now it is at 0/4 mode and it is still slow (the reason I put up this topic). The graphics does have its own independant memory. Any help?
(trying AGAIN to see if updating/reinstalling drivers helps...)

Living Room / Re: Whats the best OS?

Honestly, I think the best OS depends on what you want to use it for. Each OS has its share of strengths and its share of weaknesses. What do YOU want to use the OS for?
I have a dual-partition hard drive, so I need 2 of then actually. 1 for normal use (internet, email, music, movie editing, the works) and another for gaming (hard-core resource hoggers).

There is no best for every one.. there is only best for yourself  :-\ Sure you have communities of people who have the same <os|thing> as their best.. but that's all.. just like software..

the best is what you like to use, what you find helps you alot.. how will you know what you want to use? you can get recommendations.. like reviews.. and you probably will find some thing you really like.. or you can go around and try out stuff until you find some thing you really like.. then maybe/probably some where down the line you find some thing even better..

and again.

there is no one solution for every one (wether it be computer-related, or w/e), people are different, people change.. preferences change..

Why would you ask to know the best os? I guess you just want to use the best tools right? Well by asking this question you are just gonna get other peoples opinions.. and they're just that.. opinions.. sure you might take some opinions influence more than others.. sure you might find a really great <thing> from an opinion.. but it's not the best.. because the best is different for any one.
Well I need something that can run faster than Windows (I LOVE Windows!) because it seems to slow down over time, and I constantly use my laptop (on a frightening level of time. literally about 24/7). I have tried to install a couple versions of Linux (sounds great) because I found a couple that ran like Windows but maintined themselves, but I couldn't compile em (or make them for CD boot).

SUSE Linux Enterpirse Desktop 10.1. Its $50 a year for the updates. I have just got rid of XP as I was fed up of it crashing and I have a brand new PC. Its just brilliant I will never ever go back to Bill Gates. Its very easy to use and you get support.

Yes I know you can get totally open source Linux but as I work from home I need something simple and reliable. So long as you are reasonably IT competant its fine, I just cannot believe the huge improvement. Its an absolute pleasure to use.

Helen

Sounds good- what are like the new major improvements and where can I buy it (online I'm assuming...)?

I know about Windows, Mac, Linux, and Unix, but what one is BEST? (in terms of features that allow 100% customization WITHOUT having to go into files and editing lines after lines after lines, but in the graphical interface itself.

Post New Requests Here / Re: Cody (the mascot) shell replacement
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on October 12, 2006, 06:21 PM »
yea...not like a program to overwrite explorer.exe, but like something that would go in the C:\ drive (or main drive) that the user had the option of opening instead of explorer. (The alternate file being the one that changes the desktop, taskbar, screensaver, etc until you boot up and re-select your shell again- "shell" is lightly used, but it gets the idea across.)

Edit:
BTW: thanks for the desktop wallpapers, downloading them to check em out now...
1617
This one has me puzzled...badly.
For the people that know (or can help) what might be causing "lag" (LOW FPS) here are the specs:
HP Compaq nc6000 Business Laptop
1.6GHz Intel Pentium M processor
512 MB of RAM
One 37 GB HD (2 partitions, 1 for normal use and one for gaming- the only difference from my old and new setup)
An ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 graphics card
Genuine Windows XP Home Edition SP1 on the Gaming partition- no updates excluding Direct X 9c and drivers.
Genuine Windows XP Home Edition SP2 on the Normal partition- all updates.
(The Normal partition also uses Windows Live OneCare for security www.windowsonecare.com)

The game that is having low FPS problems (my main graphics testing game):
Need for Speed Underground 2 (no patches)
Runs in 640x480 res or something similar
Basic graphics demands: no texture filtering, no anti-analysing, world detail 100%, car detail high, road reflection 33%, car reflection update rate: 50%, basics (NO vsync).

The rundown on what happened and how can I fix it:
The computer- or more precisely the programs on the computer weren't acting like I wanted them too, and as usual, with tons of time to burn, I simply reformatted my hard drive (yep, lets lay on my bed and reformat and dual-partition my hard drive so I can re-install everything onto 2 partitions and blow away 3 hours or so. yep, GREAT IDEA!). So everything installs great. I setup my gaming and my normal/casual partitions like they were separate computers (only on the same hard drive). So, being all happy about boosting my FPS on my gaming and my overall performance on my normal, I boot up the gaming and give Need for Speed Underground 2 a whirl.
Whenever I get near a car with any high-detail items on it...I GET THE WORST FPS I HAVE EVER SEEN ON A COMPUTER!!! 1 FPS SLOW ENOUGH FOR YA? So I'm sitting here, waiting for the lag to go away, and I keep wondering why it is still not catching up. I think about my dual-partition hard drive. The hard drive light isn't on, so it isn't working, and that isn't my problem; OK, so I am, basically, screwed (to put it nicely). And after about 45 seconds, the FPS comes back to about 30-35 or so, like normal. But it repeats itself. The gaming partition never touches sites other then www.there.com and vlb.there.com, two perfectly safe & tested sites. So I know its not viruses, spyware, malware, adware...
The disk has 1 fragmented file. 1. So it isn't fragmented. It is just that I need to install SP2 on that hard drive partition too? If so, that basicly just defeats the purpose of re-formatting in the 1st place. But, is there ANY way to accelerate the FPS on this thing?

If you reply:
THANK YOU FOR READING THROUGH THIS AND TRYING TO HELP!

General Software Discussion / Quicklaunch bar question
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on October 12, 2006, 01:25 AM »
I have gotten into the XP shell (after what, 2, 3 years?) and I am FINALLY using the Quicklaunch bar...
but it only holds 3 icons :( (the rest obviously being in a pop-up menu). Is there any way to make the quicklaunch bar show more then 3 icons (like 10 or so)?

Mouser's Zone / Auto-update feature
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on October 12, 2006, 12:46 AM »
As your programs get bigger, more complex and better overall, I think we would all agree on a HUGE update, being an automatic-update...updater. I don't know how this would be done, but I do have a simpler way:
Upon clicking the "Check for Updates" option in the right-click options pane, the web browser would direct itself to the newest file, and that file would show up in the "download file" dialog box window saying the file's name (ex. screenshot_captor) followed by the version (2.xx.x).
All you would have to do is have the web page redirect itself through to the newest version-
a bit of work, I know, but maybe it could be an option for donators only?

As always, keep up the great work,

Skrommel's Software / Re: Toddler Trap
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on October 12, 2006, 12:22 AM »
It is actually confusing- took me 2 tries to understand it.
When you open it and the window pops up with "Tab + " or something, that IS the "Toddler Trap". When the children hit the keys it goes into the trap instead of Windows. Easy, but strange.

Post New Requests Here / Cody (the mascot) shell replacement

Not exactly a coding snack, program (or anything really simple for that matter) but something that would really be interesting for the whole DonationCoder.com community.

A Cody-themed Windows XP shell replacement. The idea broken down into parts:

Cody:
desktop
logon/logoff screen
"Start" Button

General Themed:
A "I proudly support DonationCoder.com" screensaver (donators only, obviously)
A "program" that can launch all DonationCoder.com programs from a single window (no Start > All Programs > Find & Run Robot/Screenshot Captor/etc.)

Maybe changing the Internet Explorer (or FireFox, Opera, Safari) start page to DonationCoder.com

I have absolutely no experience with making any decent pictures for anything (if you saw my attempt at making an icon replacement for Dr. Windows, you would STRONGLY agree).

I got this idea from simply getting the free member kit with the stickers (wanting to put a couple onto my laptop to kind of advertise DonationCoder.com) but they won't really fit...so I thought this up. I have DonationCoder.com as my IE7 homepage and visit the forums daily, and would TRY to make a Cody desktop, but it would be so horrible... :(

Maybe this would be a good download for donators- a little edge to get more people to donate.

Post New Requests Here / Temp/cookies/history/recycle bin etc. cleaner
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on October 11, 2006, 08:10 PM »
(I know there are MANY of these types of programs around, and I also know this can be done manually, but I am too busy to do it manually and all the programs I have found are slow, bundled with ads or spyware, or just plain don't work).

I am wondering if anyone could take some time and make a good, fast program that can delete all unneeded files (temp, cookies, recycle bin, history, etc.) from a computer. I have used many that are available on the market, but (as mentioned above) they all have far too many drawbacks for daily use (or simply cost too much). Anyone up to this?
Thanks in advance for any coding snack or link to good program,
