Developer's Corner / Re: Need help with Vista Backup
« Last post by nudone on May 16, 2008, 01:05 AM »
is this problem due to not having the correct user permissions to view the folders, i.e. it's nothing to do with making them into archives?

not sure if it would work like that but that's my first guess.

Living Room / Re: An idea for the forum regarding disclosure

what happens to those people that don't abide by the rule(s).

will their post be automatically deleted - or marked in some way as an example and maybe moved to the 'hall of shame' section of the forum.

as usual, i'm expecting that this will already have been done - but maybe not.

something like a "desktop mirror".

i'd like to have my main 'desktop contents' available on the various computers i use. i don't mean remote access and control to a specific machine's desktop; just the files i seem to collect and leave scattered all over it - but not large files.

the idea works like this:

1. dropping/creating 'small' files like .doc, .txt, .jpg, etc., etc. on the desktop is immediately captured by a monitoring tool that uploads these same files to an ftp server.

2. you move on to a different computer that is also running the monitoring tool and it automatically downloads the stored files onto this machine's desktop.

3. any changes that are made such as file edits and complete file removal is also monitored and shared across the other desktops.

4. there would be an option to specify 'large' file exclusion, and i suppose file 'type' exclusion/inclusion.

hopefully someone can recommend a tool that already does this. i can imagine there are ones that will do something similar but will probably be lacking one of the requirements.

any suggestions or is this a util that needs creating?

thanks.

i'd call it a good tool - but not "simply amazing". but they do say that a bad workman blames his tools so perhaps i shouldn't complain.

edit:
oh, here's the picture on the Transportica site that tomos was referring to...

great to see you've finally got the website up, Carol.

the only thing i can add, and i think you must make this change, is that your top banner is being blocked by my ad blocker - which means it must be being blocked by a lot of other peoples ad blocker too.

if you just change the name from 'banner' to 'header' or something that doesn't sound like an advert it will work fine.

very nice.

Living Room / Searchme - another visual search attempt
« Last post by nudone on April 23, 2008, 01:30 AM »
here's another Search Provider attempt to return visual results of pages found (i'd guess to be picked up by google if it has any success).

it has a nice way of doing it.

excellent video tutorial, nite_monkey. probably just at the right level for many computer users i've encountered.

i'd like to see more in this series; there's plenty of source material to go at.
1612
heheh, that's brilliant.
1613
congratulations to mr. screenshot captor.
1614
(yep, an human and an history are definitely wrong.)
1615
great reading.

i'll remember not to buy any monster cable (and try to look for blue jeans cable instead).

it will be interesting to know what happens next.
1616
Did you know this one?

http://www.archimede...rafi/C_serafini.html

yes, mouser told me about it after i made him aware of the plans for the codex transportica. i think he once owned the book.

i've now seen the book (torrents are your friend). i think the artwork is great but i was expecting something a little more interesting overall.
1617
thanks, that's very good to know, Deozaan.

sounds like we need it confirming whether they can do colour prints or not. if they don't do colour, do they require the image to be a simple black line art type image.

thanks, BrotherS.

i'm glad to know you are following via the email updates.

Living Room / Re: Most useless

2) my mother bought me a t-shirt with the joker's face on it, not THE joker from Batman, oh no. this was a very badly illustrated version of something that was meant to look like the joker but without paying any licensing fees to do so, i.e. it looked awful. add to this i must have been in my twenties, don't care much for the Batman franchise and don't need my mother to buy my clothes for me - not even back then. i do wear t-shirts so she got that part right.

around that time she also bought me a baseball cap with my name stamped on the front of it - perhaps she thought i had trouble introducing myself to people.

i could go on. i've given up trying to be tactful with my mother over the terrible christmas presents she gives me.

3) useless pc item, probably a mini vacuum cleaner for cleaning the keyboard. battery powered and with about as much suction power as wafting a single feather around somewhere up in the upper atmosphere of this planet.

i have direct experience of this strange phenomenon. my hotmail sent emails often vanish; i know i wrote them and i know that i hit the send button and yet there is absolutely no record that they existed in the sent folder.
1622
i like it too. had to recommend it to a friend that actually uses skype more than me though. and it does appear to be better than the paid for equivalents i quickly compared it with.

Living Room / Re: Do you collect anything?
« Last post by nudone on April 08, 2008, 09:49 AM »
Apparently I collect ToDo lists. And like a true collector, I keep them in their original form. Nothing is checked off. I insure that I don't actually do anything on these lists so I am not forced to damage this collection by scratching something out. My collection is quite large and it is spread throughout my home and office cubicle.

hahaha. spot on.
