Ah-ha...  looks like my Red Box Mode problem is solved (I hope).  I had one of the DLLs Allowed in Online-Armor, but not the other (must have forgotten to save it or something).  On a single quick check, Red Box Mode worked, whereas it was locking up before.  <phew>

I'm glad that was brought to my attention - Red Box Mode has been locking up for ages here (as posted elsewhere).  First test of crosshairs mode seems OK.

[Edit, 2010-09-10]
As posted elsewhere, looks like my problem was caused by one of the DLLs being a false positive in Online-Armor firewall/HIPS.  I marked both DLLs were Allowed in O-A's configuration, and the problem seems to have gone away.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Screenshot Captor excellent program - but . . .

Not everyone is  or was ever dedicated to using PayPal, not everyone wants to pay by credit card and not everyone wants to mail a check or money order and give out personal info.

Er... outside of the three options that you've outlined above, what remains? I mean, if you're receptive to the idea of donating to a developer, how else would doing so be possible?

Perhaps he could toddle over with a wheelbarrow load of $$$ notes?

It seems to me that your objection is to a developer having the temerity to ask for money, protestations aside.

We've had that before  :(

These antivirus programs need to go through a makeover.  Less bloat, and focus on minimizing the performance impact and accuracy/effectiveness.

Well said.  And an absolute absence of false positives  >:(

Living Room / Tracking new books by your favourite authors
« Last post by rjbull on August 29, 2010, 11:28 AM »
If you want to check what other books your favourite authors have written, and in particular, keep track of books written in series, try Fantastic Fiction:

Bibliographies for over 30,000 authors.
Information on over 350,000 books. Throughout the site, just click on a book to see its cover picture, description and publication details

Where possible each entry includes author photo, new and forthcoming books, series, novels, anthologies, short stories, awards, links to authors' Web sites, author recommendations, links to searches in UK and US bookshops for the particular author, and "Visitors to this page also looked at these authors" lists.

Sanity check: I don't know who owns and operates this site, so I don't know what degree of authority its entries have.  But it looks right, our local library uses it, and it's a valuable resource for book lovers.

I don't know how it compares with Mouse Jiggler, but in similar situations I've used Caffeine, which fakes keystrokes.  It's by Tom Revell, more famous as the author of Stickies.  It's small, and doesn't need .NET.

Living Room / Re: Simple way to connect two computers (both XP) ?

Is there a simple way to connect two computers ? Quick & dirty, I just want to get some files and compare some directories.

Do both PCs have parallel ports, or USB ports?  If so, and provided you have the appropriate special cables, you can just use Total Commander.  I used to routinely connect a WinXP and a Win98 that way (parallel port version).

ClipMate's product description includes:
An exclusive PowerPaste(TM)  feature puts ClipMate in "rapid fire" mode, allowing quick pasting of a series of items into an application.
[...]
Do you work with a lot of structured data?  If  you have data that is separated by commas, tabs, linefeeds, etc., then ClipMate's "Exploding PowerPaste" can make short work of data entry.  People who work with a lot of contact information (lists of name, address, etc.) absolutely love this.
Clicking on "more viewlets" on that page takes you to ClipMate Flash Demos and Tutorials.  The third one down is the demo of the feature I think you need, Tutorial 2 - PowerPaste.

I haven't tried it, but most of the even slightly advanced ones have some kind of semi-automatic multiple pasting.  E.g., read ArsClip's Help on Form ModeClipCache and ClipMate have similar things that allow you to paste a series of items in one go.  They don't usually remove the items from their "database of clips," but move the pointer up and down it.  You might come to an accommodation with them.  ArsClip is free, donation accepted; the other two are payware.  ClipMate is the 700-lb gorilla of the genre.

I don't know about DOCX, but for plain DOC, Antiword for Windows worked well for me.

There's also catdoc, which was more for DOS and Linux, but I could never get it to work.  I see there's now a 32-bit Windows version, catdoc ported to Windows, but the author says it doesn't support DOCX either.  A quick Google search turned up a few leads that might be worth following.

USB Disk Ejector works fine too and is freeware.
-Midnight Rambler (August 14, 2010, 05:38 AM)

USB Safely Remove does more than just eject.  Samples:

  • Display surprise removal USB devices
  • On attempt to stop a whole card reader:
    • Ask a question
    • Always disconnect
    • Never disconnect (only allow ejection of memory cards)
  • Drive letter management —
    • Hide drive letters when there are no media inserted (System setting)
This option is very useful when you have a card reader. Usually card readers
create several extra empty drives in the system. After this option is enabled you
will only see drives of those slots where memory cards are inserted into.
    • Prohibit assigning the following drive letters to hot-plug devices
It will prevent Windows from assigning the specified drive letters to hot-plug
devices (flash drives, USB drives). It is useful if you have nelwork drives
  • Global Autorun
Here you can assign programs to launch on connection or disconnection of all devices visible by the program

The feature I like most is the ability to permanently assign a drive letter to a USB device.  E.g., one USB stick always appears as F:, another as G:, the card reader is always H:, and my WD Passport external HD is always I:, whether or not they are present at boot time and in whatever order they are added.

If you want even more features, the same firm make Zentimo.  Key features:

  • Drive Letter Management
The program can hide drive letters of unused card reader slots, tie a drive letter to a specific device and many more...
  • Portable App Quick Launcher
Lets you launch any application located on your external drive with a click
  • Powerful Autorun
Can automatically mount\dismount your TrueCrypt drive, a file manager, check flash for viruses or anything else on device connection\disconnection
  • Real Safe Device Removal
Lets you stop your device, displays locking processes or even activate a stopped device back.
  • Honest Drive Speed Test
You can see your drive actual read\write speed

Maybe Solway's CLIPTEXT ?  It's lightweight all right; only 140K download.  You'd need to check it works on late-model Windows, though.

For once I agree with Tuxman   8)  Though I used AWK more because AWK scripts are easier to maintain.  Another option is Minitrue by Andrew Pipkin, which is specifically designed for the job.  It's worth reading Eric Pement's sed page for more details on this; keep paging down to the "related batch editing files" section which mentions Minitrue amongst others.  On no account overlook Mr. Pement's supplementary page on Minitrue workarounds.  Mr. Pement appears unaware that Jason Hood has made an updated version of MiniTrue that fixes some issues, though I haven't tried it.

Post New Requests Here / Re: Idea: Clipboard Mouse Click n Paste
« Last post by rjbull on August 01, 2010, 10:00 AM »
Another reason I been reluctant to use any other form of clipboard management is because I use the script to label file names. I can cycle through the entries with the script without losing focus from my renaming. I tried arsclip before and it was promising, but it stole focus on my file renaming.

How are you renaming the files?  Directly, or with a file renamer?  If you aren't using the latter, you might try one.  E.g., Oscar's File Renamer, which is old, but free, and works a bit like an editor.  Of course, this only makes sense if you have several files to rename, you probably wouldn't bother to fire it up for just a single file.

Ninety-nine percent of my work is done using a text editor.
Same here.  That's why I don't feel qualified to evaluate the ribbon.   ;)

Same here too (when I was at work).  A WordStar-style text editor is the quickest, most efficient way to get bult text down on disk, and edit it afterwards.  See e.g. A Writer's Word Processor, by Robert J. Sawyer.  M$ Word is for tarting up text so it looks fancy, or pompous, or official.
