There is no way MS can close app installations like Apple. The only way they can do that is to force people into Metro with no 'desktop' access. Even Ballmer is not that dumb.

Microsoft Security Essentials can not be updated manually either? ie add updated definitions via USB key for example. There are other anti virus that can do that.

Cheap and done right never go hand-in-hand...

Agreed.  You can have it:

  • Good

  • Cheap

Pick any two.   :P

The main part of your requirements are under the 'GUI' heading, I would not recommend tackling GUI with plugins. Custom theme and custom functions.php would be my 2cents.

I hope we can avoid this becoming an angry political thread.  Let's all try our best to keep things very civil, polite, and respectful.

Killing each other is evil, period.

I will make a brief comment below, which I insist is NOT AT ALL in contradiction to the italic line above this one.

"Bin Laden hoped to provoke a civilizational war between Islam and the West. And we took the bait."
http://www.thedailyb...ama-win-on-9-11.html

The greatest problem is illustrated here (I confess I didn't read the article though):

To take 9/11 as the start of something is ignoring history.

I am going on a bit of a tangent but something vlastimil said reminds me of an annoyance or gripe I have. Freeware that goes shareware. To me a person who starts a serious project should expect to put a lot of hours in it, actually the success of the product or license has nothing to do with it. What I am saying is that if you decide to go freeware when you are at 0.1 alpha doesn't mean less hours are needed to reach 1.0.
Fairware is not all that different from donationware, we have all seen one workable implementation. It has the potential to work in this modified way.

General Software Discussion / Re: Building Windows 8: I need longer arms!

No matter what fancy resolutions and displays (Apple's retina display for example) handhelds or tablets can not be serious work machines - unless you are willing to walk around with a 20" tablet in hand. "Real" (not extrapolated/enhanced/etc.) screen space rules. You may say what about  touch displays where one sits and uses touch, I would say if you are sitting then why not connect an input device.
My point, touch may be fine and all but I would limit it usability to 10" at most and doing serious work with a 10" just doesn't seem right to me.

This will become 'an additional layer' type thing. 90% of serious PC user will turn it off and move straight to traditional desktop. There is a reason the desktop has changed little and it's not because of lack of innovation its because it works.

Thanks Curt and Steven.

My primary computer is still XP but that will change. I mostly dislike stand alone directory monitors but far too many programs leave garbage and I don't mean just in the registry or bad stuff but also folders in My Documents and Application Data. So I think I will like Revo Pro's 'Real-Time monitoring of system changes - during install of programs', just have to decide, perhaps by downloading the trial.

Have read the threads on Revo here on DC, wondering what's the current verdict on buying the pro version vs the freeware. For an 'obsessive' downloader is the pro recommended?

Thanks Alexander. Good to know that that option is available.

My mistake, when you said 'upload images to a server' I thought you meant to upload somewhere else other than imageshack.
