What's the Best? / Re: Anti-Virus Package
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on December 03, 2006, 04:52 PM »
I (being the security-nut-insane-geek-nerd) have tried and used almost all the antvirus programs out there, so here I list the popular ones off of the top of my head (with ratings, of course) - I may make a complete list later.

Norton Systemworks 2001: 2/5
Norton Systemworks 2003: 2.5/5
Avast! Home Edition: 4/5
AVG Free Edition: 4.5/5
BitDefender 8 Free Edition: 4/5
AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic: 4/5
McAffee Internet Security Suite: 4/5

Windows Live OneCare: I am using this now and it is not the best (needs more options, but is still in heavy development) but still far from the worst (sure beats Avast! and BitDefender off the list - Norton and McAffee are always off the list anyways), but I love the fact that I can blame Microsoft for a problem  ;D...well not really. But here is the run down on it and why I like it:

It scans for Viruses AND spyware both on-demand and silently (if you choose to install Windows Defender - previously Microsoft Antispyware).

It defragments and cleanes your hard drives both on-demand and silently.

It Backs-Up and restores your files both on-demand and silently.

It can be installed on 3 PC's for 1 year for only $50.

And if that isn't enough, they even offer an online FREE version, a 90 day free trial period (WITH Tech support via email) and if you purchase it and need help you can chat online, email them or talk over the phone!

Anyways, enough about Windows stuff.
Basically if you need high-end security for free, go to AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic or AVG Free. If you need more, try WLOC or ZoneLabs solutions.

LaunchBar Commander / Problem with closing and an invisible dock :S
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on December 03, 2006, 12:00 PM »
Hi all,
Here are 2 problems I am running into (just installed the new version too...):

I CAN NOT CLOSE LAUNCHBAR COMMANDER!!! :o  :(
That is a HUGE problem for me and I do not know what is causing it. But also...
I seem to have an invisible dock () that is somehow (I even have all docks minimized) manipulating my windows so that I can't put docks at the top of the screen nor fully maximize my windows.

Any help? (I am going to try to terminate LaunchBar Commander and make sure it can at least "close"...even if it isn't the way it should.)

Sygate was purchased by Symantec about a year ago...the firewall is outdated (and no longer offered or supported). Its sad cause it was my favorite firewall... :(

My favorite piece of software would have to be...
well, I can't pick just 1 cause there are way too many on my PC...so probobly a 3-way tie between Process Tamer, Internet Explorer 7, and a little program called CleanUp!

Ok, I have got to be honest with you...
I have no clue what you just said  ;D (I had you up past the .iso, then I lost you after that...)
I am going to check out the sites now, however I have really wierd hardware/software problems (continuously reinstalling Windows XP and partitioning for Linux does that to you after the 12th install) so my USB ports (and CD drive) rarely work (my external HD is no good to me anymore...) and my laptop has no floppy drive  :(.

LaunchBar Commander / Shutdown/restart/hibernate etc. ability?
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on November 13, 2006, 10:45 PM »
Hey all was wondering if anyone knew how I could add the Shut Down/Restart/Stand By etc. to the bar so I could dump the taskbar completely...

If not Mouser could this be added in a future release?

Thanks all!

I used SyncBack a couple times; wonderful little app. I used it for an external, on-site hard drive though...

I am trying to run a live CD onto my HD (yea, I have heard from the person that I got my copy from that you cant run live CDs onto HDs, but it is a work in progress (which is actually making progress!  :)). To be specific it is Knoppix 5.0.1, if that makes any since to anyone. If the name sounds familiar, you may remember it from the Windows XP type look, with the multi-button "taskbar" at the bottom of the screen. So far I have gotten the files to the HD and edited the boot.ini file, but that is where I stand (currently I am working on other projects).

New suggestion...
also after Ctrl+1 is pressed, the Alt+F4 combo is disabled for that app...I go insane after I do that - one window too many can be very, very bad for me.

Would there be a way to have a set status update time interval instead of every 2 minutes or so?
It kinda gets annoying saying he is offline and then online about a second or so after.

Living Room / Linux security programs
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on October 28, 2006, 12:20 AM »
Hiya everyone!
I am converting my Windows XP laptop into a Linux workstation :), and I know that there are far less security problems in Linux (and less people using it meaning there aren't many exploiters anyways), but are there any good security programs for Linux ?

P.S.: Is Mobysaurus available in a Linux compatable format? :o

Thanks,

DShutdown is an OLD program of mine (featured in old versions of my "program" CompuTECH; see the Living Room for the subject).
the lock feature I have been using for years now...but that is the standard windows lock and is easily bypassable (I use Station Lock XP for locking- only found 1 bug in it; when the mouse wheel is clicked I usually get a fatal error screen and the lock exits).

The problem with the AntiVir program is the shield- not sure why, but that is what it is.
The EULA thing...when updates occur I just send out emails/IMs with links to the new versions. Yea, I do know that 30 programs is an overhaul, but I test so many shaky programs that is became nessessary (if you do test programs or a weekly basis you might know what I'm talking about).
The program is aimed twards mid-range users that need free protection (all the programs that JavaJones said are part of it).
The Gateway laptop took a few (quite fatal) blows after my dad got..."agrivated" (as he puts it) and lifted it up about 6" and dropped it... :o (hes a true "basic user").

Any help as part of a control panel/launcher for this "program"?

wreckedcarzz,

First off all it is nice to see you taking on such a project. They best way to learn is to try, progress to do, and then to teach. You are on the right track.

And some questions for you:
1) What is your motivation for this project? IOW why did you choose this project?
2) What is the targeted use case?
3) Do you want to learn/do each piece of the project yourself, or concentrate on the collection/integration of the pieces and have other do things like create the installer for you?
4) Have you thought about creating test cases using virtual machines to test your software?

And finally, Three days ago I started to play with NSIS. It is script driven, but some GUI wizard exist. It is free, popular, and very capable.

And last, but not least, good luck with your project

1: I have always wanted to do things with the computers, and the biggest thing that is in Microsoft Windows is security problems, so I follow that (the options are nearly endless).
2: What do you mean by "targeted use case"? As in basic home user, power user, etc?
3: I have been trying to learn how to put programs together myself...but I have been trying to get the 1st scripting assignment from the forum-school, and have yet to figure out a way to get it to work... Basicly I have good ideas but don't have most of the know-how to put it together...(I have made a couple functional copies, but installing them on a computer via installer may cause problems with the shortcuts...)
4: I utilize the 3rd party software for the entire scanning/removal/blocking, the thing I am trying to get is something to make it install everything in a special directory with a shortcut to a "launch panel" type thing for initializing all the programs.
As far as testing goes (for the 2 or 3 functional ones I have done...) the directories and shortcuts do work and have no effect on the programs functionality...(it works seamlessly).

I do have a couple bugs that I have recorded, but they are 3rd party program problems, not the launcher/compile problems. If any of you are on a Gateway 7110GX laptop...
Do NOT install AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic (it hogs the processor)!
Do NOT use Norton Systemworks 2003/2004 (scans hog the processor and there are optimization problems)!
Do NOT run more than one scanner at once (the laptop gets EXTREMELY hot and can burn you)

NSIS is a program I have tried...great end-user installer, but too difficult for me (unless there was something I was overlooking...)

Living Room / BSoD...screensaver? Check it out!
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on October 19, 2006, 07:24 PM »
Ok, this has to be the most hilarious program that I have ever seen that is standalone, tiny and free.
It is a Windows Screensaver (just open it, it is a .scr file (I think .scr was what it said)) but what it does is it opens the infamous BSoD (and it is so good at what it does I honest to goodness thought that it was a virus bacause it was the exact Stop error screen I have seen from my computer a few months back!!!) using data collected from your computer. It is so good "it can be used to fool IT's, or mess with friends". And it does. I had to hit the Windows key to exit it (Esc can be used though) because I thought the thing was a REAL BSoD.
Here is the link...
Webpage: http://www.sysintern...ties/BlueScreen.html
Direct file: http://download.sysi...Files/BlueScreen.zip (open the .zip file and copy the file to your desktop, then run & enjoy  :)).

Yea, I went to the Inno site, and about 30 seconds into it I knew there was NO WAY I could get that to work...I can't even get the 1st lesson in the self-teaching programming school. :-[
But anyways, going to look at ISTool now...

Actually, lanux, I use Install Creator (free version) for some of my small 2D game projects, and use their Patch Maker as well. As for spambots, I don't really worry about em'...about 75% of my inbox is spam, but Thunderbird filters it out just fine, so I don't get concerned about it  :). I'll give Inno a shot, see what it can do.

Living Room / Making a combination super-security program, need help...
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on October 19, 2006, 12:20 AM »
OK, let me start out by stating,

I am not affiliated, work for (I'm 13, c'mon), or support these companies or programs. I simply assist people with computer maintenance and care.

Now that the legal stuff is out of the way...

Some history on the project:
It started about 3 years ago, I put together a group of programs and deemed it (after the store CompUSA) CompBMS (computer-Brandon Montgomery Seal). It has rapidly evolved, gaining more and more programs, and has gone through the names CompBMS, CompuKING, CompuTECH and is now CompuCARE. It is a quite long list of programs (about 30+) for COMPLETE computer security. (Now if your reading this and you just lost your jaw thinking that that many programs on one computer is insane, keep your pants on). It has gone through about 15+ anti spyware, 10+ antivirus, 5+ firewalls (yes, we have had problems with multiple firewalls, yea yea yea, it is a work in progress and for the time being it only uses 1 firewall (2 if you count the Windows Firewall) and several other tools.

What I need assistance with:
Currently, I am downloading and placing the files into one central directory on my Desktop. I need someone to compile an installer and someone to make a program that can launch each security program (similar to the Windows Media Center layout). The whole thing is currently TEXT BASED (yes, open that Word document and click that link...maybe it will work (if the instructions were followed) maybe it wont...) and it extremely annoying to upkeep (and run, for that matter).

What the idea is behind this much security:
As the whole world will tell you, if you are on Windows and on the internet, chances are your computer will be infected with SOMETHING within the 1st hour of uptime. SO basically (in testing on 3 computers) what this huge (overkill, as people commonly refer to in) mass-program type thing does is using ALL of it's tools, secures your computer 360 degrees, 24 hours, 7 days, 356 days, constantly. I use freeware tools to patch/update files as necessary, but I really need some help with the whole...coding/compiling into a huge folder thing.

Living Room / Re: Vista licensing - will it kill enthusiasts interest ?
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on October 17, 2006, 01:32 AM »
After reading the first few posts, I am further pushed to converting to Mac (yes, a Windows lover thinking of the "poisonous Apple"  :o). However, this whole licencing thing is insane- I reformat my hard drive FAR more then anyone I know (and that is a lot of computer nerds  ;)) and if I can only re-install Windows Vista once, then what is the point?!?!?! (Ultimate was what I wanted...but $400 for a 2-install OS is BS!!!)
Anyone else outraged by this? I may just convert to Mac...it is starting to convince me...*picks up Apple*
