Living Room / Re: Scantron alternatives: I need cheaper/creative solutions.
« Last post by mouser on August 28, 2010, 12:55 PM »
One of the creative solutions I've just been thinking about is using the software Vuescan (or something similar) to process the scans and do something with it.

sounds like a horrible idea.

surely this is a case where you should find some software that is designed to help you create and print multiple choice forms and facilitate their scanning and data processing.  this is something that is done all the time for surveys, etc.  find a good piece of software or software+hardware combo made for this.

the really nice thing about the .sctool way is that you can easily share them.

i think if you bring up the "configure tools" dialog and then close it, it will rescan for .sctool files.. i think. if not i will make it so.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Adding a URL to Search History Results?
« Last post by mouser on August 27, 2010, 01:01 PM »
Welcome Neal.

Excellent post -- i can see what's happening -- FARR is removing the url since it is checking if it's a file on disk and not finding it.
I will modify this so that FARR doesn't remove urls from the launch history.

Stay tuned for an update this week.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Program run only one time
« Last post by mouser on August 26, 2010, 11:53 AM »
Welcome to the site Guillaume

I'm afraid there is no function *YET* that can tell FARR to only launch one instance of an application, though it is a very good idea to add it, and i'll put it on my todo list; in fact i should add it to my LaunchBar Commander program as well, so perhaps it's time to move it to the top of the todo list.

As far as listing opened windows, there is a plugin for it, called FARRAltTab, though people have been posting some troubles with it recently:

LaunchBar Commander / Re: My experience with LBC
« Last post by mouser on August 26, 2010, 11:30 AM »
Thanks for the thoughtful post.

In the past LBC used to be a bit flakey regarding autohide but it seems to be quite stable with some changes i made several months ago.

It sounds to me like the problems may be related to dexpot or other tools that mess with the desktop.. I think the first thing that would be really helpful is if you could try using LBC without these, and let me know if in fact it is the case that it's only when running with one of those that LBC acts up.  Then at least i would be able to try to reproduce it.

The other thing you could try it to configure a hotkey for your launchbar and have it show only when you hit the hotkey.

yes i agree.. i will fix it so you dont have to save first.

try this:

Crop, then hit save (Ctrl+S), then rename it by typing a new name in the bottom "Name:" field and hitting enter.

note that you do have to save the image after you crop in order for the new name to not create a new file.  i could change that though, since it seems unnesc.

Ok let's see if this beta version fixes the problems:
https://www.donation...arCommanderSetup.exe

The new version should fix the problem where the tree icons get mixed up; it will show blank icons for the nodes that have bad icon data, and you should be able to change those icons now.

note:
actually i think that a recent past release should prevent this scenario from occurring for new launch bar files, as it should detect the setting of a bad icon right from the start, and show a ? in its place -- but in the past if an icon failed to load for mysterious reasons, it could confuse the program and result in the wrong icons being shown for items.  the new fix should handle older files that have a bad icon in them before the recent changes prevented this from being possible.

ok i think i have found the thing that is confusing it, i think it's the 2 icon values for "Top->Projects->SQLite->sqlite_tutorial" and "Top->Projects->SQLite->index".  both of these have the value of "\" specified for their Icon value and that seems to be causing LBC to freak out royally.  setting icons for these and then doing the icon maintenance operations (or restarting), or deleting them, seems to fix the problem.

next step is to find the bug in the code making it misbehave in this case.

ah i see now, and i am able to reproduce the problem.  definitely a bug, working on it now.
15716
nicely figured out laura -- i need to remember that trick, as it can sometimes happen to me when a monitor i used to have connected is no longer connected.

the first post has the launchbar commander ini file, but it's the .mcf file for your launchbar that i need to help test.

if you exit LBC and restart it, does the problem remain?
send me the .mcf file ([email protected]) and let me have a look -- the problem may be an icon file that the program is not reading correctly.

im not sure i 100% understand the problem, but i'm guessing it has to do with the %SystemRoot%
if you manually BROWSE to C:\Windows\system32\SHELL32.dll to select the icon, does it work ok?
does the problem only happen when your icon path has %SystemRoot% in it?
15721
there are two issues, the first is if you want a complete listing of the deep recursive contents of the directory, the second is if you want to match a search inside the deep recursive contents of the directory.

the first cannot currently be done, though i could add it.
the second is done already (*at least mostly).

so if you want to find something at any depth under the d:\run branch of the directory tree, you could type:
"d:\run nametofind"

note the SPACE after the d:\run because that is important.

* the only caveat to this is that farr tries to be a little smart and my memory is that it wont go deeper into the subdirectory if it finds matches in the top directory you specify.

« Last post by mouser on August 22, 2010, 08:22 AM »
Hi Ramblinrick, welcome to the site!

Even though this is your first post, your blog has been mentioned before on DC

It's definitely a false positive, and fsekrit is harmless.

You can tell actually just by looking at the "Result" column which specify the name of the malware "suepected"; the flagged entries say "suspicious" or "generic", which is anitivirus-speak for "false positive".

when an antivirus tells you it found a "suspicious" file or a "generic" malware, those are weasel words and they cause much more harm than good.  we've written at length about how harmful such lazy practices are by antivirus companies, and even proposed a few things we might do to try and stop them from engaging in this obnoxious behavior.
