Living Room / Re: The horror that is my kitchen upgrade project
« Last post by Josh on April 27, 2009, 02:42 PM »
Well folks, the installers have gotten a few more side cabinets in. We also had our stove put in which is a big plus. Here is the current photos.

IMG_0001 (Custom).JPG

This one showcases the end of the left wall which was blank in the last set of photos. It shows off the new stove as well as our drawers which have cushion close (a feature which prevents the drawers from slamming).

IMG_0002 (Custom).JPG

This one is a front on view of our kitchen up to this point

IMG_0003 (Custom).JPG

This one shows off the new cabinets above our fridge which turned out really nice. We thought the fridge would stick out way too far and block off the cabinet on the right wall, but it turned out very nice thus far. Forgive the bluriness, it was hard to get the camera to play nice.

Anyways, more to follow tomorrow.

All of the portable app "installers" I have seen do simply one thing, extract the files to a user defined path. This makes it easier for your average user as they do not have to rely on extracting a zip file and then wondering "Where did I put that?". Simply put, most of these installers DO NOT require admin rights and are designed for ease of use rather than just running in the portableapps shell application. The .paf.exe function just provides an easy way for the menu system to use and install the file into it's shell.

All of the apps from portableapps.com come with installers....I see nothing weird about it.

General Software Discussion / Re: Another 'Lifetime' license bites the dust

Actually, the cost of AnyDVD HD cost the same as buying AnyDVD and then the HD Upgrade. I did this and it cost me the exact same as a new license. Now that is not the case anymore, but users were given plenty of time and warning about the change in licensing systems. You cannot blame slysoft for user's waiting until after they had made the switch to a subscription model, that is solely on the user as they were given plenty of time.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. This is the problem with the "entitled generation". You bought a lifetime license to UPDATES for AnyDVD. AnyDVD HD is a new product which has been incorporated into the existing software for simplicity so people don't need two different programs running. The HD UPGRADE is just that, an UPGRADE. It is NOT an update to the existing DVD/CD code. People feel that because they bought lifetime UPDATES they are ENTITLED to this UPGRADE. It's a failure to understand what was being purchased.

Please, take this as no disrespect towards any users here, but this to me sounds like the sole thing I was talking about in my "Entitled Generation" thread. People seem to feel that everything should be free. They fail to either read the fine print which clearly stated that UPDATES were included and that they reserved the right to UPGRADE the product at any time. They clearly distinguished that UPDATES were included for free for the lifetime of the product and users have been getting what they paid for for years now. An Upgrade is a change in functionality, an update is a fix to a problem or a new addition to the existing protection breaking code for AnyDVD. People just feel they should get everything for free since many never bothered to read that UPDATES were included, not UPGRADES

People did not pay for lifetime UPGRADES, they paid for UPDATES, as in updates to the DVD functionality. While AnyDVD and the HD program are not "different" in that they are separate programs, they are different in that one offers differing functionality. The HD UPGRADE is not necessary for all people and it comes down to people not reading what they were purchasing. When I first purchased AnyDVD, I knew full well that only UPDATES were included. BRD is a new format for the HD Genre, HD-DVD is not really relevant as it is no longer actively supported by any studio. Yes, HD-DVD was a subset of DVD, but it is also a newer technology as the HD-DVD side of most discs will not read in a standard player and the content is encoded in a different manner (it is not 720x480 MPEG2).

But yes, it would have been ideal to make two totally discernable products, but instead they went this route and let people buy the addon if they required it (along with a lifetime subscription to UPDATES TO BRD FUNCTIONALITY).

Zaine, The HD product IS NEW. Just because BRD and HD-DVD share the same optical disc format does not mean they are the same technology. That is what people are confusing about this product. AnyDVD and AnyDVD HD are for two different product lines. DVD continues to receive updates in line with its LIFETIME license for UPDATES. BRD is a radically different product and the changes warranted, in my opinion, a new product. This is part of where I was coming with the entitled generation. Just because a new product line came out does not mean you are entitled to it for free. Updates were promised and updates are being delivered. BRD is NOT THE SAME as DVD so that is an UPGRADE. You are still receiving updates for the DVD product, which is what you paid for. If you don't need BRD/HD-DVD, then the product line should not matter to you until you obtain HD technology, which to me sounds like you don't care about since you view it online.

Has anyone had any experience with any of these lately? I am still using TVersity but am looking for something with better transcoding support and built-in codec support. Right now, Tversity can't play certain files so I am beginning to look elsewhere. Has anyone messed with Weezo or orb or playon lately? How about any others?

Living Room / The entitled generation....Are they right?
« Last post by Josh on April 12, 2009, 01:49 PM »
I am making this post after reading various reviews found around the web bad mouthing various aspects of different things such as file sharing, movie and music sharing, and copying of various media formats. Should music/movies be free or are the content creators well within their right to charge? It seems that society today has produced a group of people who feel everything should be free and that they are entitled to the hard work of others without any sort of compensation. What are your thoughts?

I actually think IE8 is a vast improvement over IE7 and would have no issues deploying it on any network I maintain.

That was part of my logic. If they wanted to be identified they would either A. Login or B. Register. Just my two cents.
1573
Please don't consider my comments to be a stamp of no on the subject, I just don't feel that resources should be spent on it. I am not the final say. I just think that keeping track of each guest would be rather wasteful as you have no idea who the person is, where they are, or what their background is. If you had that data, then it COULD be useful from a demographic standpoint, but without it you are just staring at a guest browsing that hasn't registered.

I could be wrong, but I feel these resources could be devoted to more useful features that would benefit a wider audience for the site such as selective filtering of posts per user, etc.
1574
He doesn't care about the REGISTERED users, he wants the guests that ARENT registered that show up as "Guests online" to have Guest001, guest002, etc. This, to me, seems like an incredible waste of resources to even implement just so one person can monitor the browsing habits of people on a forum.
1575
Why would you do that? That would be a waste of system resources as most times, someone visits and closes the browser. Sometimes it's via a google link, sometimes other means. How would you know when a guest changed? How long does said system have to keep track of said guests? I say
