thanks, jgpaiva.
1552
yes, many thanks again to Gothic.

a backup server/forum sounds like a nice idea when troubles happen.
1553
thanks very much for saying so allen. that's a great recommendation, the highest we've had so far i think.

i'm sure timns will want to say something too about your comment.

Living Room / Codex Transportica - recognition at InspirationBit.com
« Last post by nudone on August 25, 2008, 07:00 AM »
the Codex Transportica has had a great article written about it over at the Inspiration Bit website. i think Vivien has done a great job (it couldn't have been fun going through the underlying Transportica code) and there are a good list of suggestions for improving the design of the site.

if you are interested in web typography (or just typography in general) then you will enjoy the IB articles. i know there are several tips i've taken onboard from reading past posts.

(i'll be doing a tutorial for inspirationbit.com about how i did the Transportica banner image, but it might take me a while to finish it.)

i'll end just by saying how grateful i am to Vivien for writing the piece.

the subscribe buttons should now be back in the right place.

i had put some images under the adsense banners hoping that they would appear when 'adblocker plus' removed things, but it appears to remove everything so the empy spaces remain at the moment. i'll try and fill them somehow.
1557
thanks, but i already know the tip about changing the word "banner" as it's something i tend to spot using maxthon - i've had to give the advice out several times on this forum (i also gave it to DC as that used to use the word "banner" in the header image as you pointed out).

the problem is that there is no word "banner" in the adsense banners nor in my files so i'll have to use another method.

edit:
thanks for pointing out the problem. i've installed adblocker plus now so i can test things properly.
1558
i've made a few changes to the appearance of the website, hopefully, covering the points Deozaan and mouser made above.

for those of you using an ad blocker like you Deozaan, you should see something else so the site shouldn't look so weird with large blank spaces.
1559
i'll admit, it wasn't a deliberate joke. Tim saw the connection and assumed i was being clever.
1560
BTW did anyone spot nudone's terrible visual pun with his choice of wallpaper for the site?
i dont see/get it.

:) so, guys, what about the wallpaper ?? :tellme:

it's a 'flock' wallpaper design, get it? flock, birds, flock of birds.
1561
good points. not already gone unnoticed by myself during the design stage.

but the areas you point out at each side of the navigation are deliberate - i call them 'details'. i suppose they don't actually add anything to the design though so they could be removed. they were simply there to 'break' up that rectangle a little bit, i.e. it would have been easier for them not to be there.

the bottom column gap - also deliberate although frowned upon by many no doubt. there are meant to be several more banners down that left column that would force the gap to close automatically. but, as it might take a while for the other banners to appear i suppose i could close the gap anyway.

good observations, but not necessarily ones that i'll rush to change.
1562
thanks for the constructive criticism. there should be adsense banners where your ad blocker is taking them out. i'll put something there to indicate they have been removed - or maybe get the top to close if nothing is there.

the navigation links are actually exactly how they are meant to be. but now you've mentioned it i will try to smooth them out. it's not that they've been enlarged or compressed - it's simply the font being extremely fine and what i did to it. i will see what can be done to even out the pixel edges without making it too thick.

very helpful comments though. anything else that looks odd, please let me know.
1563
thanks, tomos, i'm pleased you liked it.
1564
thanks very much for saying so. and yes it is also all down to DC that we teamed up (and a bit of match making from mouser), what a wonderful thing DC is.

and i'd also like to thank Tim here for helping out with the Transportica. he stepped in at a crucial moment and has done more than i could ever have hoped for.
1565
just a quick announcemet for our new comic strip website. as you'll see, the characters are probably related to Cody, or are his friends, at least. who knows, maybe Cody will make an appearance.

the work is a collaboration between me and another DC member, timns.

there are plenty of strips lined up and ready to go, updates will be on mondays and thursdays. the website itself is not 100% finished but it's close enough for the moment (there's plenty of stuff that needs cleaning or tweaking underneath it all).

i hope you have time to have a look and become a regular reader. there's the usual RSS and email subscriptions services available.

General Software Discussion / Re: Convert to tiff (lzw)
« Last post by nudone on July 31, 2008, 03:39 AM »
ACDSee would do it as it allows you to pick files from different folders at the same time. the batch conversion would also put the new files in the original folders - it should also cope with deleting the files as you would just hit delete on the selected files after the job has done.

not sure about other image manager type programs but if they allow selection of files in different folders then they should do it.

edit:

not sure about just selecting bmp files and ignoring others - to that i'd say 'probably'.

edit again:

simply arranging the files by file type means you can easily just select all the bmp's with a couple of clicks.

edit again again:

i should have realised but you can also just search for *.bmp within a selected group of folders to get the same result. obvious really.

it looks like a painful job to me so i'm very grateful to Gothi[c].

an excellent plugin.

google search fans may like this little thing i use - it allows you to keep your fingers on the keys whilst moving from farr to google's search results as it uses the beta google hotkey thingy.

a screengrab will help explain

capture012.jpg

so you open farr and type gh followed by your search term and then hit enter. you'll be able to then navigate the results in your browser using the google hotkeys:
J = next
L = previous
/ = search field
etc, etc.

maybe one of the 'magazine' style themes for wordpress would be right. this would make it look less like a blog and more like a 'magazine' website.

i have my blinds carefully closed to only allow light in but prevent anyone looking out - or in - as my view is another persons back garden. it's a bit like working in a cave.

(see attachment in previous post)

Here it is. But I have to confess, I tidied things up a little first. It's not usually this neat looking.

my favourite.

interesting.

i've tried 360desktop. uninstalled after about 1 minute. i'm sure it works on the majority of machines but on mine it 'smears' the desktop icons when scrolling the screen. in other words, totally useless.

cool. looks like nasa control centre.
1574
i would have left it turned off but i had a bluescreen and then when the machine came back on skype had forgotten all the settings - so, maybe skype is crap and likes the pagefile. just making wild assumtions.
1575
i've turned the swap file back on (system managed).

err, it appears that my operating system isn't actually any quicker when the page file is disabled so i was just kidding myself. i'm going to leave the page file on now and just forget about it.
