LaunchBar Commander / Re: some full screen games won't run
« Last post by mouser on September 26, 2010, 05:00 PM »
D/L'd and installed the beta as is and games now run.

that's great -- then i can leave in place the auto fixups behavior when screen resolution changes -- what i did now was modify it so that if the screen resolution changes, LBC first waits a tiny bit and then checks if the screen res changed because a full screen app (usually a game) is playing.  if so, then it doesn't try to fixup (undock and redock); otherwise it will.  and when the game comes out of full screen it should readjust itself to normal.

as for alphabetizing -- there are options to do that for directory listing nodes, but not for nodes which you create manually; i could add that though.

Multi Photo Quotes / Add video panels to MultiPhotoQuotes?
« Last post by mouser on September 26, 2010, 03:02 PM »
I'm thinking of adding video panels to MultiPhotoQuotes.

I think the idea would be to make them like the rest of the MPQ panels, they would be tile-able, and be able to show multiple videos at once.. most (or all) would be made silent; perhaps options to seek random positions in videos, maybe some effects like slow-motion play.  Maybe an option to simply show random frames from videos instead of images.

Any thoughts?

and non distributable open source (open for the buyer of the software to make modifications but not to distribute of make a fork).

rxantos, do you have any links to those or even just license names? i'm quite interested in exploring those licenses.

yeah the new image is not a flowchart but a graph of data -- completely different tool needed for that.

your points are excellent -- if you are doing really high volume, then all sorts of other considerations need to be considered, such as: is the machine going to hold up to the high volume, and otherwise small differences can end up being significant (toner cost, noise, speed).

Can you try this beta:

https://www.donation...arCommanderSetup.exe

First try it without making any changes to the options, to see if my changes fix things smartly.

If not, go to main options node and try unchecking both "disable topmost" and the new option below it, "readjust dock", and see if that helps.

Any help on chooseing which open source/free license to use is a good thing:

First of course, you’ll need to decide what sort of license will fit both your project and your intentions for how you want to release it.

This used to be more complex, because there were so many competing options, but it’s gotten much simpler because a few free-licenses have become extremely dominant, leaving most of the rest as historical footnotes. I’ll present this as a flow chart and as a series of questions to answer about your project in case you’re uncomfortable with reading flow charts.

Many people are quite happy with Brothers. However, they are a disposable printers.

this is an important point, and i view many tech purchases through this lens.

i ask myself -- given the price point of the kind of item i am buying, is this something where i need to really worry about how much money and hassle it would cost to get it repaired? if so, i buy one kind of product -- perhaps something on the expensive high end because of its reliability.  or is this the kind of thing that if it breaks after a month/year (or if i don't like it, or something better comes along, or technology improves), it's not a huge deal to throw it out and buy something new.

a standard laser or inkjet printer, at this price point, is essentially (for many of us at least), a "disposable" item.  better to buy a reasonable low cost one and not worry too much about it (not spend 100 hours researching to find the "best" one, or planning for if it's going to hold up for 10 years and how to repair it).  if it lasts a few years and breaks, you don't get it repaired, you trash it and buy a new one.

you will probably have better luck searching for a program if you use the term "flowchart".

ahh, wait wait.. i remembered something else --
I added code recently to have LBC re-adjust itself when the screen resolution changes.. i'll bet that *THAT'S* what's causing some of these troubles..
ok i'll add an option to disable that as our first test.. then if that *IS* the cause, i'll find a smarter fix.

stay tuned for an update tomorrow.

that's basically the upgraded version of the printer i have; like i said i couldn't be happier with it and i duplex all the time.  for that price it's hard to go wrong.

if the problem really did start with the latest version, one thing you might try is going to the top Options node and UNCHECKING the "Disable Topmost" option (assuming it is set by default), since this is the only new thing that i can imagine interfering:

Screenshot - 9_25_2010 , 11_01_25 PM.png

anyone else experiencing this problem? i can try to add some test functions that might help us narrow down why this is happening..

this is interesting -- presumably because LBC is on the screen docked?
can you tell us an example game or two where this happens?
when you say they won't run "properly" can you elaborate exactly what happens?
if you configure your LBC dock to "auto-hide", does this solve it?
if you minimize your dock to the tray, does this solve it?

if these things solve it, i could add an option to temporarily hide/minimize the dock when launching certain programs..

Living Room / Zen Magnets vs Buckyballs Comparison/Voicemail-Reply Video
« Last post by mouser on September 25, 2010, 11:29 AM »
It brings a warm glow to my soul when i see a little guy fights back against the bullying legal intimidation of the big companies.  If you feel the same way this might make you smile.

In this youtubed open letter, a representative from Zen Magnets (small-fry makers of little round powerful magnets you can use to make interesting shapes) replies to a legal threat from Buckyballs (leading makers of little round powerful magnets you can use to make interesting shapes). It starts with a recorded voicemail from Buckyballs CEO Jake Bronstein threatening to sue Zen Magnets for selling a kit containing both Buckyballs and Zen Magnets on eBay with the claim that Zen Magnets are manufactured to a higher tolerance, are stronger, and have a brighter finish. From there, the Zen Magnets rep does a wonderful job illustrating the validity of his claims -- and making Buckyballs look like an anti-competitive bully who fights dirty with threats instead of superior products.

i think letting go of 11x17 is a great idea.
not only will it jack up the price significantly, but the desktop footprint as well.

The 11x17 think is likely to be the major feature that excludes most common printers.

For standard sized printing, i love my years-old dirt cheap Brother HL-5250DN (discontinued);  more brother lasers here: http://www.brother-u...rome_Laser_Printers/

As always, look for reviews, and ratings on amazon and newegg.
15492
they improved the search in smf2 and seemed to incorporate some of the ideas, but i dont think they used the code or added all the features.

It's "em-dash" not "m-dash":

The term em dash derives from its defined width of one em, which is the length, expressed in points, by which font sizes are typically specified. Thus in 9-point type, an em is 9 points wide, while the em of 24-point type is 24 points wide, and so on. (By comparison, the en dash, with its 1-en width, is ½ em wide in most fonts.[11])

Fascinating points Rob.

When I raised the price to $39.95, basically doubling it, suddenly a lot of the new technology I put in there started getting noticed accordingly.  People who did reviews saw it, and I started receiving many more letters about it -- things like the Smart Light, and the raw speed, etc.   I think the higher price was my statement that it was worth looking at in a deeper way.  That's just what I got out of it, but the experience with raising the price seems to bear that out.

In particular your observations about how raising the price has the effect of people taking it more seriously -- while low prices tend to make them ignore a product matches some of my unfortunate observations, and it is troubling but important information for authors to consider.

Welcome tot he site puremetal; i'm glad you like the program.

First, congratulations for figuring out how to use the QuickField option -- i don't think many people have -- i'm glad you like the feature.
Regarding font size, i'll put it on my todo list but i fear it's pretty low down on the list since i fear it might be a bit messy to try to get it enlarged without adjusting sizes and positions of the panels, etc.   But don't let that stop you from additional suggestions -- I promise to consider all requests.

one doesn't make money selling such things, though i suppose you could make a career of supporting users if the userbase grew large enough.
