Find And Run Robot / Re: how to specify searching only in two specific folders?
« Last post by mouser on October 15, 2010, 03:35 PM »
It just hit me that you are taking physical camera photos of your monitor.. someone needs to install Screenshot Captor.

i need to see the second column of your search folder list, so i can see what modifiers you have set.

show me now your search folder list.
maybe it's a bug.

ok i apologize, i messed up.
to have it search by DEFAULT (ie with no modifier), dont use * instead specify the keyword: blank

using * does exactly what you are seeing, matches when you use ANY keyword.

sorry!

im not sure i follow what you want, but maybe start out simpler:

let's just take the case of one drive/directory:

with Modifier keywords: m
it will ONLY search that drive/directory if you specify +m in your search.

with Modifier keywords: m *
it should search that drive/directory always by default, and also if you specify +m in your search
note the SPACE between the m and the *

you can specify as many keywords as you want, separate them by spaces.
multiple drives/directories can have the same keywords.

what if I want to restrict a search to just a specific drive (without going into prefs and unchecking the unwanted drives) ?

the smartest way is by using Modifier keywords.

see this screencast for a quick tutorial: https://www.donation...c/3ds/fr21/fr21.html

you could also do as you say and put the start of a directory like F:\ at start, but you have much less control when you do that.  using modifiers lets you search multiple specific folders and for only certain extensions, etc.

no it's nothing like that.. LBC is just trying to make work for it's sister application, Process Tamer  :P

This is probably somewhat outside of the scope of a coding snack -- though it would make a terrific NANY application.

The idea is to make a commandline utility that can invoke one of the right-click file/folder context menu shell extensions on a file/folder.

That is, there are some programs / shell menu extensions that can only be accessed interactively from a file explorer tool.  For example, right clicking on a file to upload an image to an online gallery, or selecting a file for a file comparison tool.

These shell extensions do expose their info via a dll in a predictable way to file explorers, so it should be possible to load them in a comandline utility and select one not by showing the user a menu but by using a commandline tool that specifies the target file and some pattern to match against the menu to select it.

Such a utility would let us batch execute such context menu extensions programatically, and invoke them from other programs.

And it'll actually bother me that there's something in my code that isn't well-written.  Anyone else experienced this?

nope.

ok ok, yes sometimes.  it can definitely nag at your brain as well.  but you also have to choose your battles -- sometimes it's best to push on and leave some imperfect code for the next version, otherwise you'd never finish.

phitsc, yes i experience that too.. for me i sometimes i have the hardest time pulling the trigger and starting coding on a project, and feel like i am locked into the research+plan stage where i am evaluating options.

perhaps the resistance to starting and finishing are connecting in terms of a difficulty in overcoming momentum..

well i suspect you found a bug.. something about your old config that was causing the cpu use.
what might be nice is for you to try re-creating (or just load from backup) your old config and experiment disabling or deleting nodes until you figure out which node was causing the problem.  perhaps a directory folder node with deep contents?

Oh my yes.. Only a fraction of projects i work on ever escape this pattern.. The miracle is when you manage to stick with them long enough to reach escape velocity from the ennui.

Honestly this is one of those things that makes you a real programmer, developing the habits and skills that can carry you past the inevitable decrease in enthusiasm that happens when you start really getting into the weeds with a project and hitting the unfun slog through getting it really "finished".  It's not easy.

something must be going wrong.. it shouldnt use ANY cpu on idle, 0.

can you try to do some experiments to see what might be causing it -- what options you might have set or something that make that happen.  any one else have any clues?

Yeah this is a bug but one that will require a bit of work to fix.. the workaround is to "flatten" any objects (from the Objects menu) before splicing.

1.0.0.37 seems to be working here, at least on my simple test of entry that triggers after i type a space.

A brief help file that just showed a sample entry and said how to test it would be useful for first time users -- since i suspect many people will not be familiar with the basic logic behind using this (though they will grasp it from a simple example).

Find And Run Robot / Re: Letters Instead of Numbers Please!
« Last post by mouser on October 13, 2010, 09:46 AM »
i've thought about adding letters.. it just seems like if it's not in your top 9 items, you are better off filtering the results by typing more rather than having to locate the 15th result.

the other problem is that you'd have to hit alt+letter since just hitting letter will add a search item to the search string.  and then that rules out using alt+any letter for other stuff which it is used for now, like bringing up options, right-click menu, etc.

All the more reason to move the download to your web server where you can track downloads; as a file attachment the download count gets reset each time you replace the attachment with a new version.

« Last post by mouser on October 12, 2010, 10:02 PM »
App, I think the first thing to say is that all of us here support you in whatever you decide to do, and whatever you want to focus on.

When something you used to love is causing you so much stress and frustration, it definitely seems like the right thing to do is put it down and spend time on other things.  It's so hard for anyone to make a living this way that it can cause extreme stress to try to make it work, especially when you don't have the cut throat shark personality so often needed to make something work as a business.

Forget about your NANY project and put the IDE aside for now and focus on taking care of the other things in life that are demanding to be taken care of.. we are still going to be here for you.  You may find that your love of programming will re-kindle when it's not also wrapped up in so much other stress.  Until then focus on simplifying the distractions and stresses and concentrate on what you need to do.

And most of all thank you for making DC a better and funner place to be and bringing your warmth to the site.  I hope you can lean on us a little while you plot a new path forward.

It's realllly easy to do, the only thing you'd have to change is start uploading new versions at a predictable url with a predictable name (and not change the file name with each version).  It can be a zip file or a full installer.  If you start doing that i'll make the update file for you to use.

If you're going to do it eventually you might as well do it now and make it easier on your beta testers to grab the new version.
