Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Re: dot Net complaints
« Last post by mouser on November 03, 2010, 07:51 AM »
One of the real pains of distributing a dot net application seems to be worrying about and figuring out ways to deal with the situation where a required edition of the dot net clr isnt installed.

And one of the things that absolutely infuriates and confounds me is why MS did such a horrible job of helping the user to understand the problem when a dot net program runs and can't find the dot net clr runtime libraries installed.  They couldn't find a nice way to instruct the user that they need to install them?  And why didn't they write standard functions/utilities to check if the needed runtimes are installed and send user to a nice clean simple url for lay people to read about and download the proper runtimes needed.

It just boggles my mind that in designing a next generation language framework like this they couldn't have put more time into making a smoother process out of helping users figure out they need to install the runtimes and how to do it.

Hi Brian,

Launchy is a good program, but as the author of FARR i can't help but wonder why you prefer it over FARR.. have you tried FARR lately? Please do let me know any areas where FARR could use improvement.  But not on this thread, better to post in the FARR section of the forum.

Newsletter for November 2nd, 2010
"MegaLetter"

1. Newsletter Editorial - NANY 2011: The Home Stretch

Despite my intention to get us back onto a schedule of sending out a DC newsletter every two weeks, it's actually been over 6 weeks since the last newsletter.  For that I apologize, and pledge to do better going forward.  Grab yourself a soda and settle in for a super-sized newsletter, it's the biggest newsletter we've had in years.

So, let's talk about the big event taking place on the website: NANY 2011.  For those who aren't acquainted with it yet, NANY is an acronym for "New Apps for the New Year", and it's where we invite every coder who hangs out at the DonationCoder forum to release some brand new freeware/donationware to the public on the first of the year.  It's a non-competitive event, in which coders of all skill levels are invited to submit something, and in which everyone who enters wins a rare and infinitely invaluable DonationCoder coffee mug starring our cute mascot Cody the bird.

In many ways NANY represents the best of DonationCoder -- it brings together professional coders with amateur dabblers and a large community of users filled with encouragement, ideas and feature requests.  And it's just plain fun for everyone.  But as we enter the final two months of the challenge, we need your help!  We don't have an advertising budget and we suck at self-promotion.  So we rely on people like you to help spread the word.  Please tell your friends about the NANY event; if you have a blog or a website, please tell your readers -- especially if any of them might be coders.  Don't just sit there -- the more coders we have participating the better!

Calling All Coders!

If you are a coder, stop being so shy! It doesn't matter if you've never posted on our forum before -- just jump in and introduce yourself -- and if you can't think of an idea to code, ask for suggestions!

NANY 2011 has always been a team effort, but DC member Perry Mowbray has been the driving force behind organizing the participants and keeping everyone on track.  In the coming weeks you'll be hearing a lot more from him on the forum, where you can read his progress reports and check out his cool graphs of project activity.

NANY Updates:

New NANY Pledges:

2. User-to-User: Your Input Requested

We welcome everyone to participate on the forum, regardless of their level of computer knowledge or how long they've been a DC member. If you're still waiting to make your first post, see the links below for some good places to get started.

3. DC Community Mini Reviews

We love it when readers post new mini-reviews.. and are thrilled that quite a few new ones have been posted since the last newsletter:

4. Announce Your Software or Service

Although I don't often highlight it in the newsletter, we do have a section of the DC forum where we are happy to have shareware authors post about their latest creations.  While we are always concerned about spam on the forum, unlike many sites we welcome the participation of shareware authors on our forum as long as they clearly identify themselves and their relation to the commercial software that they are discussing.

This last month in particular has seen some of the best and most interesting discussion threads with authors about their software:

5. Coding Snacks, and DC Member Software Threads

One of the best areas of our forum is the Coding Snacks section, where people can request small, free, custom-utilities to be written by volunteer coders.  For this newsletter I've also put the list of dc software updates here, along with a few other related discussion threads.

6. Website Discoveries, Debates, and Discussions

What's new in cyberspace? What exciting new sites have been discovered by forum members?  What's the current hot topic and debate? Read on to find out..

7. Fun, Humour and Amusements on the Web

If you've read the newsletter up to this point, take a break and check out the lighter side of the forum - humour, videos, and games..

8. General Software Discussion

Almost half the posts on the DC forum take the form of general software discussions, questions, recommendations, etc. These posts wind up in the General Software Discussion section and make it one of the most active sections of the DC forum. This is a great resource if you're trying to solve a software or hardware-related problem. We get so much traffic on this board that we split the recent content into two sections in the newsletter - general software and specific software discussions.

9. Specific Software Discussion

Here you'll find some of the standout discussions about specific programs that have been started since the last newsletter.

10. Discounts and Giveaways

Members of our forum frequently reach out to shareware companies and arrange software discounts and give-aways.  In addition, forum members are always on the lookout for discounts that they find on the web and they love to share with the rest of us.

11. Developer's Corner

The title of this section shouldn't scare you off - there is definitely something of interest for everyone here! It's more than just a section for the discussion of software development, it's also where we discuss web design, entrepreneurial ideas, and general productivity issues.  It's great to see that the section has been pretty active recently.

12. Hardware Hideout

We tend to focus on websites and software on the forum, but that doesn't mean that DC forum members aren't always on the lookout for cool new gadgets and information on maximizing their computer's performance.

13. DC Gamer Club

The hardcore gamers hanging out on our forum have been getting more vocal about discovering and discussing new games.  Even for those of us who don't often play computer games, it can be fun to read about them.

This Month's Special Discounts and Giveaways:

We will also be giving away 5 copies -- members can enter on the giveaway page.

« Last post by mouser on November 01, 2010, 02:42 PM »
i wonder if the blowssi script is designed to see BOTH the +OK and mcps prefixes.
if not, somone needs to add that.  the blowssi coder might be able to quickly add that if you can't.

i forget if the xchat version has a way to say to use mcps as the prefix?

Can someone make a farr alias pack for blekko please?
15290
We've had lots of threads on the conflict of interests surrounding Google, and why they may not be all that interested in eliminating all of the massive amounts of advertising based spam from search results.

Blekko is a new search engine site that is attempting to leverage some domain expert information from humans to weed out the useless spam web pages.

..According to CEO and co-founder Rick Skrenta, it’s because the web is filling up with spam and low-rent webpages from content farms like Demand Media, saying the web now has 100 billion urls, most created by bots.

“You need to bring large scale human curation and combine it with algorithmic techniques to bring the quality back,” Skrenta said. “If you have the set of the top 150 health sites, you know what, you really can answer nearly any health question, and you know what, you really don’t want to be searching outside of that set.”

blekko is a better way to search the web by using slashtags. slashtags search only the sites you want and cut out the spam sites. use friends, experts, community or your own slashtags to slash in what you want and slash out what you don't.

« Last post by mouser on November 01, 2010, 06:14 AM »
because the implementation of fish and mircryption never use more than 56 characters, this script considers it an error if you try to use more -- while fish (and mircryption for mirc) just discard the extra characters.  the solution is not to use more then 56 characters in your key :)

fish does not support cbc mode as of last time i checked.

Living Room / Re: I'm thinking about learning how to program.
« Last post by mouser on October 31, 2010, 08:09 PM »
Just a warning -- from what i've seen of people's experiences, it's seems really hard for people to slowly and gradually learn to program over a long period of occasional dabbling.. I suspect it's like learning a spoken language, in that if you don't immerse yourself, the concepts don't stick.

C# is actually pretty good too -- it's been a while since i played around with it and having recently played with it some more i must say it would also be a good language to start with, and perhaps better than python if you are less interested in quick coding, and more interested in developing good Object Oriented Programming habits for larger projects.

Living Room / Re: The conflict of interest that is Google
« Last post by mouser on October 31, 2010, 01:34 AM »
Amen:

http://tech.slashdot...lluting-the-Internet

"In 1998, Larry Page and Sergey Brin made a promise: 'We believe the issue of advertising causes enough mixed incentives that it is crucial to have a competitive search engine that is transparent and in the academic realm.' Now, Micah White writes in the Guardian that the vast library that is the internet is flooded with so many advertisements that this commercial barrage is having a cultural impact, where users can no longer tell the difference between content and advertising, and the omnipresence of internet advertising constrains the horizon of our thought. And at the center of it all, with ad space on 85% of all internet sites, is Google. In the gleeful words of CEO Eric Schmidt, 'We are an advertising company.' The danger of allowing an advertising company to control the index of human knowledge is too obvious to ignore, writes White. 'The universal index is the shared heritage of humanity. It ought to be owned by us all. No corporation or nation has the right to privatize the index, commercialize the index, censor what they do not like or auction search ranking to the highest bidder.' Google currently makes nearly all its money from practices its founders once rightly abhorred. 'Now it is up to us to realize the dream of a non-commercial paradigm for organizing the internet. ... We have public libraries. We need a public search engine.'"

Living Room / Re: Axsotic 3D Spherical "Mouse" Ball
« Last post by mouser on October 30, 2010, 11:06 AM »
i think from the video you can see there is a big difference between the movement of the ball in the Axsotic case vs the SpaceOrb -- in the Axsotic, you can actually freely *SPIN* the ball, which should give you control over speed and let you do real continuous and controlled rotation in 3d space.. it seems like the SpaceOrb must be a very different kind of movement -- more akin to a joystick where the Axsotic is more like a trackball..

but wait.. hold on a moment.. doesn't a trackball do this already?  only the added joystick-like extra ability to push the ball in 3d at the same time is new then, and that looks clunky..

Living Room / Head in the Clouds web comic by DC member -- a new favorite
« Last post by mouser on October 30, 2010, 10:25 AM »
My favorite favorite webcomic happens to be "Head in the Clouds", which was started by DC members Nudone and timns, but now done entirely by Tim, and updates twice a week.

I've posted about it before, but it just keeps getting better.  This week's strip is one of my new favorites:

Living Room / Axsotic 3D Spherical "Mouse" Ball
« Last post by mouser on October 29, 2010, 07:58 PM »
Here's a new 3d controller -- looks pretty neat and compact.  In addition to the obvious rotating -- the video makes clear you can also move the ball in four directions.

The 3D-Spheric-Mouse's (patent pending) suspension gives you maximum freedom to rotate and move your virtual objects in 6 achses with only one hand!

Because the mouse lets you to use your fingers to rotate and your hand to move, there are no interferences or errors while navigating.

The 3D-Spheric-Mouse has no mechanical sensors that can generate unwanted behaviors. The specially developed polymer springbodies create a smoothly consistent workflow.
