General Software Discussion / Re: Windows Security Essentials

Out of curiosity, was he running with Administrative rights when this happened?

Here's that information I promised to get you, Joker. He was running as as a user in the administrator group. The OS was Win7 and it was running at the stock UAC level (which I have since told him he needed to bump all the way up which he did) and the browser he used was Firefox v3.5.3 with no extensions.

He used to run Eset software before, but when his subscription lapsed he thought he'd try to save some money and give MSE a try. After his big adventure he couldn't get his credit card information to Eset fast enough.

Yeah, with 46 I think I'd wait until I was forced to change.

You got me curious, though, so I looked through my list of extensions & it turns out 26 say they are for up to 3.5.*. Guess I'm waiting for sure now.

And my point on the video card is that really only matters if you're looking at gaming.  I have a gaming box- I'm buying this for work and to do iPhone stuff.  Doing that, the 9600 pushes enough pixels to be at a good enough for the use level... most of the apps that I'm going to use are going to be at the 3DMark01 levels of advanced graphics use...  Macs aren't really for gaming, so you buy the tool for what you're looking to do...

And I agree with everything you just said. My only issue was someone (was it you?) said that the 9600 was a top end graphics card. It's not. It's a very capable solution for a large percentage of people and uses, but it's not a top end solution.

I can install MS windows on a Mac.
I can't install Mac on a Computer built for MS windows.
So you say it's apple's fault.
I don't really know.
If hackers can do it, certainly ms can.

To understand the reasons of why you can't install Apple's OS on a computer built for Windows you have to understand the process. Apple, just like every other computer manufacturer, specs out and designs the motherboard that goes into their computers. The key difference between a motherboard made for an Apple computer and one made for any Windows PC is that Apple has a custom-made chip integrated into the motherboard that is exclusive to Apple & no other PC manufacturer has access to.

When you go to try to install Apple's OS one of the first things it does is check to make sure that custom chip is present on the motherboard & everything is legit. If the OS installer isn't able to detect that chip then the OS will not be able to be installed.

Apple is the only one legally allowed to make this chip and they won't sell it to any other computer manufacturer. Now with the situation being the way it is the only way to install an Apple OS on a non-Apple computer is to either clone the chip and include it on a motherboard which would be costly and illegal or to hack the Apple OS to remove detection for the custom chip which is also illegal.

I hope this explanation helps you see that through this custom chip Apple controls what kind of hardware you can install their OS on & they don't want anyone to be able to install it on any hardware they aren't making a profit on.

Hope this helps.

Neither the 9400M or the 9600M GT on the MacBook Pro are anywhere *near* "top end". The dell has a ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4670 which should be fairly decent - comparable at the least.

I was going to post the exact same thing, but to be fair that's not an Apple-only experience. Most laptops in general do not have top-end graphics capabilities.

Probably because they're still waiting for an answer back from the people who actually wrote the OS.

Oh, I don't know. Microsoft's OS is probably just as complex as Apple's and MS can get a patch out in just a few days when it's severe. I'm not saying that's how quickly MS would react if something like this happened on Windows, mind you. I'm just saying they have the ability to act fast when they need to & I would have thought Apple would have this capability as well.

Another troubling thought is that I thought OS X was built on top of BSD, a very mature and secure OS. How did this get past the BSD layer?

So far I have turned loose a barely computer-literate couple in their 50s and a just-got-her-first--laptop-it's-really-mine 18 year-old. Both the couple and the teenager were coming from XP environments and everyone was enthusiastic about Windows 7 and generally loved the new OS.

I was especially worried about the couple as they had never been exposed to UAC before and were going to be resistant to change, but as soon as I explained UAC to them they really embraced it. They'd been victims of drive-by adware, toolbars, and malware while browsing & they were really keen on anything that might help stop that kind of misfortune from hitting again.

If Microsoft is careful they just might have a hit on their hands.
1533
Just a heads-up, the 3.6 is finally beta or beta rc1 or something.  Anyway, I just installed it and I haven't found anything broken yet. :)

Ooo...tempting, but I've got 46 extensions that are working without any problems. I think I'm going to wait a bit.

Well that is up to you Innuendo but dont think you test basing evaluation on random info.

Prove to me how you know 100% how I test and what I do? Please don't assume to know me, my computing environment, or how I test. Also, please do not assume that if someone reaches different conclusions than you that they are wrong.

You are set on not liking MSE so use a different standard no security software can pass - including the one you use right now.

This is also a false assumption on your part. When I first heard about MSE I had high hopes for it & had told everyone I know that finally a free, easy-to-use security program had arrived & they should consider installing it immediately. I had even installed it on a few people's computers who were less worldly about computers & did not have very much experienced. To prevent another false assumption on your part, I embraced the idea of MSE & advocated its use to everyone who did not want to pay for security software.

This was before the test results came out that showed that MSE lets a lot of stuff through. This was before my knowledgeable friend's experience where MSE let numerous trojans install. This was before the information came out that MSE has no heuristics at all

Unfortunately, I'm having to eat crow & go back to everyone I recommended considering MSE to reconsider installing it due to its poor performance.

This was just confirming what you want to hear.

This is false. I did not want to hear this as I wanted an effective ad-free security program to recommend to friends and family. MS let me down. They usually don't, but this time they did.

You seem to think I have a vendetta against anything with Microsoft's name on it and that is simply an unfounded accusation. I have a bought and paid for version of every software package Microsoft has sold. My keyboard and mouse both were made by Microsoft. Somewhere in a dark corner of a closet I even have a Microsoft Phone System. Yeah, I'm one of the 6 people worldwide who bought one of those.

Releasing a security program without heuristics in this day and age is worthless. It would have been fine to release something like that when XP was released, but in 2009 it's silly as the malware comes to quickly to rely on signatures alone.

This is my last reply to you on this subject as you seem keen on liking to disagree with things you assume to be true and just simply aren't. So feel free to have the last word, but I don't see the point in discussing something with someone who *imagines* what the other person's viewpoint is rather than listening to the other's points without making assumptions.

I'll have to ask him and get back to you on that one. What I can tell you so far is that he was running Windows 7 and UAC was not disabled.

Well, how about I post what I posted in the other thread about this data deletion bug:

Apple has known about this bug since September 12 and yet there still is no fix. This may be atypical behavior for Apple, but it may not. Are they always so slow to fix major problems such as this?
1537
Right now I'm using WikidPad and keeping the wiki itself encrypted on my drive. It's a nasty hack, and I'd really like native encryption within the application, but beggars can't be choosers...

You may consider it to be a nasty hack, but look at it this way. If you find another program you prefer you can still use your choice of encryption. Also, if you find another encryption algorithm you'd rather use you can still use it with the program of your choice. Modularity has it's benefits.

Innuendo, next up must be a test on your computer  8) You read too much into random chitchat. A bit selective too, my impression is most like MSE. Much is hype but some know more than OneCare and still see the point.

Dude, I don't need to test on my computer. I outlined my best friend's adventure with MSE and it failed miserably. You keep making excuses for MSE, but my opinion is backed up by real world "seen it for myself" facts. You keep talking about how well MSE does in your controlled test bed, but it has failed in real world testing & that's not hearsay. I saw my friend's computer myself. With my own eyes. Please forgive me if I don't want to "test on my computer" software. That. Does. Not. Work. We had to run MBAM, A-Squared, and something else I can't remember to clean all the stuff MSE let in while it was :: cough :: protecting :: cough :: his computer. BTW, this isn't a novice this happened to, either. He's very knowledgeable when it came to PCs. His only mistake was to trust a half-baked security program.

You use Outpost Suite right?  Cool What an interesting changelog for that program! Hopefully you have dug into settings or virus scanner work somewhat...

With the miserable failures MS has had so far wtih MSE we'd be in for some very interesting changelogs from them as well, but as you know, MS never posts changelogs. And of course I dug into the settings of my security software. I hope everyone does no matter what they choose to run.

The worst thing, besides users losing their data of course, is that Apple has known about this bug since September 12th and there still isn't a fix available.

Any software, when only used at the basic level, will never give you an understanding of the software's worth.

I'm quoting this to make your point stand out. That is so true. There have been programs that I have used at the basic level that were capable of so much more and this has a two-fold effect of one, tasks are going take longer wasting time that could be better spent elsewhere; and two, knowing that I'm not using a program to its full advantage imparts a sense of frustration & if the program cost money causes feelings of anger towards myself as I feel like I'm not getting my money's worth because I haven't taken the time to learn the intricacies of what I bought.

For Apple it is rarely heard of because "everything is so perfect"…
-fenixproductions (October 13, 2009, 12:18 AM)

Only because Steve Jobs and his rabid fans (note: this statement is not to imply that everyone who owns a Mac is a rabid fan) downplay every flaw and deny every vulnerability. Like I stated earlier in the thread, non-Mac users usually don't hear about serious flaws in the Mac OS till it's been fixed when the Mac forums fill with comments of "I'm glad it doesn't do that anymore."

Here's another Snow Leopard bug (though not as bad as the delete your data bug):

http://discussions.a...2184529&tstart=0

How many other OSes get so confused you have to type your login password backwards to log in?

There was also a bug in Leopard where if you were moving files from your Mac to a destination over the network & the connection was lost all the files you were moving were deleted regardless of whether or not they had successfully made it to their intended destination.

OS X...it just (half-ass) works.

Unfortunately for Microsoft, many folks will hear about this abysmal full scan speed and simply say...moving on.

At this stage of the game the only thing MSE has going for it is that it is free & without ads. If it cost something or was ad-ware I don't think anyone would be defending it or running it. It's simply just not that good yet.

As a sysadmin it's easy to have hundreds of very long very hard to remember passwords.... if your noggin can handle that, then wow...

I've got a bunch of tricks and word association games I play in my head & it's a pretty secure system because the associations only make sense to me.

That and the lack of more system-level utils like better file managers, which someone else mentioned.

File manager junkie that I am if I were a Mac user I think I'd be using this:

Every major media outlet would be covering this if it was happening under Windows and Microsoft would be being excoriated EVERYWHERE... whereas when Jobs et al. are behind a glitch like this it's barely noted.

Well, to be fair...is it really newsworthy when it's a bug that affects less than 10% of computer users world-wide?  ;)

I use the Firefox password manager but maybe I should/need to consider KeePass or RoboForm but for what reasons??

I think the focus of this thread is tinjaw is looking for a program to keep track of all his passwords across all his programs. Your solution is great while you are using Firefox, but how do you remember your passwords for things you don't use Firefox for?

I, fortunately, have a very good memory so I don't use any program to remember my passwords. Just my noggin, but a lot of people aren't blessed with good memories so my solution isn't optimal for some.

I guess one could always go with a password.txt file inside a TrueCrypt container. :)
