General Software Discussion / Re: Why the Windows Registry Exists
« Last post by Lashiec on November 26, 2007, 12:45 PM »
I remember that back on the 9x days, Notepad couldn't handle text files bigger than 64 KB, and CDPLAYER.INI couldn't store many CDs in there :)

Excellent post, at least we can finally understand why they choose a registry system instead of .INI files. I wonder if this was some kind of answer to Jeff Atwood's post about the same thing...

Can we move to .XML or custom .CFG files now?

8. You had your name legally changed to Apple MacIntosh.

Well... Yeah, I know, it's Microsoft, but it's an example ;D

Total threadjack, but here's some interesting news about XP SP3... apparently even the beta releases boost performance by as much as 10%

Perhaps the Microsoft guys coded their fixes in the wrong codebase :D

This is weird, it seems to work randomly (mmm, crosslink ;D).

I mean, apart from those links, other people in that thread say they don't get a popup

This thread could prove useful for you when it comes to choosing a distro, Zaine and Gothi[c] posts are quite interesting, and that PolishLinux site is excellent.

Personally, I take these ads as what they are, ads. And pretty funny, by the way, except for the one about boxing (W-T-F, that one is terrible). It's not that they're going to change anything, people is not going to flock from Vista to Leopard overnight, even if all over the Internet people continues to talk about the BIG Vista migration (I can count with one hand those people who REALLY passed on Vista, despite bashing it to no end).

I suppose this particular one is for fan service, talking about something that is boiling on the Internet (not on the real world though), and making some fun of it. An ad is an ad, nobody takes them seriously, so don't get so angry about it.

Just for some laughs, a friend of mine is running Vista AND Leopard... and XP as well, although he rarely uses it. And he does not complain about any of the three.

Living Room / Re: How often do you reboot your primary workstation?
« Last post by Lashiec on November 23, 2007, 05:13 PM »
Reboot, only when it's needed (program or updates installed that demand that). And it's turned off before I go to bed, or when I leave home. Sometimes I leave it on if I'm downloading something, but it's not usual.

Anyone who's tried reading a 4 kg programming manual in bed knows the advantage of having an electronic copy on a portable device.

Indeed. And big books break easier than smaller ones. Ask my copy of "Sophie's World", its spine is totally bent.

A touchscreen would easily clear away most of the problems of modern readers compared to books.

Hmmm, it lacks a bit of finesse compared with the Drobo ;D

I was thinking into something more like this:

You could also get some parts here and there and a copy of Windows Home Server, and assemble your own Drobo.

format C: ;D

Why don't you download the standalone installer from File Hippo? Be sure to select the stable version in the menu at the right side, as the most current one is a beta of the next major build. Or use Flash with another browser (last resort).

Or if you're brave enough, go hunt in the CLSID section of the registry (not recommended).

If the iPhone wasn't a closed environment, even more than normal phones, something I thought impossible, and a expensive device, I'd say that it could be the best smartphone (as a pure phone, you're better buying the cheapest one they have in the shop) easily. Let's not forget about the "flexible" contracts, the hijacking of your wallet during, 2 years?, the destruction of the trees around Cupertino... etc. ;D

Well, at least the Apple TV panning is universal, what a mess Apple did with that appliance. Is it me or almost every thing in that list is out of reach of mere mortals? And no audio players category :(

General Software Discussion / Re: Best free firewall for Windows?
« Last post by Lashiec on November 22, 2007, 01:30 PM »
Let us know if things go wrong, mitzevo. The program looks great, but that picture in Ryan's post about Firefox accessing the keyboard makes me wonder if this is a security program or a trojan that kidnaps your computer and demands a ransom divided in a thousand parts. I suppose this would make a good security suite, without any other program protecting the computer, as it seems to make a bunker of it.

Without any lightweight and shy firewall, I'd end up buying a router. Or setting up the old computer to be a firewall (tricky...)

Q: What's 1 foot square, flat, covered in hair, and greasy?

A: A hair metal singer whose best days have long gone into the oblivion

That leaves Jon Bon Jovi out... no, wait, almost any other hair metal singer out. Back to topic, so this is an interesting thing, I wonder if we could grown artificial hair in laboratories so we could use it when petrol "spills" over coasts and oceans.

8/8 on the first one. P2P software and lyrics sites were the easiest, because I was familiar with all the options, except the "bad" lyrics one.

5/8 on the second, the last one was EASY, it tried to flood me with popups. Guess spamming sites are difficult to distinguish. That's why I avoid giving the email so easily.

And a 100% on the third one. Happy! ;D. I quickly remembered the golden rule: If they provide a link to enter your personal information, then it's a scam for sure. The last one was hilarious: "Please take several minutes out of your online experience(...)". Several minutes... LOL

I would say, that despite all the scientology stuff and dating Nicole Kidman for so long, Tom Cruise is still a good actor, with quite some good movies in his career. Mel Gibson, on the other side... he lost it when he started directing.

Hey, this is not the topic at hand. Ya know guys, if you're "cheating" on your loved ones, be careful to cheat on the Wii as well. Yes, that includes cheating in Wii Sports, hitting the other guy with the controller will do ;D

I got that 42 level as well, but plummeted after a while to 36, and couldn't get higher than 38 afterwards. The only thing that bugs me about the game is that it seems to have a limited amount of words for you to define, and they get repeated after some time playing, but it was a couple of weeks since I played, so it could have go for the better in that area.

General Software Discussion / Re: Maybe Vista doesn't suck?
« Last post by Lashiec on November 21, 2007, 03:25 PM »
I find stupid that they decide to release Windows 7 for 32 bits CPUs as well BUT that may mean the requirements of the OS will be similar to Windows Vista. 64 bit CPUs were introduced in 2003, even 7 years later we're going to deal with 32 bits... I was planning the move to 64 bits, but at this rate, even the AmigaOS 5 will be a 64-bits native build! ;D. Well, maybe they'll plug an XBOX 360 introducing a really cool product.

This poses the question, why move to Vista with Windows 7 down the road? It will be another ME, even if Microsoft didn't intend to make it so, and not being THAT bad, if everyone chooses that road.
