Then there was the man who worked in a straw factory.
He was rather a desperate fellow, always clutching at straws.

Not only that but when the factory went out of business eventually he got to the last straw.

I can't spend any more money for a while because I'm saving for my girl friend's 18th birthday present.

Yeah, I'm 81 years old--gotta problem with that? ;)

Is it the 18th present or the 18th birthday?

But like they say, if you have your health that's the important thing.  Especially with an 18 year old girlfriend.  ;)
Oh and quit braggin;.  :)

I took the easy way out and restored the Macrium image.

It sounds like I have to learn how to do that to avoid these kinds of disasters in the future...  :(

I recommend it.  Even the free version in 6.x comes with WinPE 5.x.  Of course nothing is totally fool proof.  Now that I am using the incremental backup it is worth buying as it avoids having to make a complete backup every time as I used to do.  It makes it practical to save an image even if you only installed a few utilities.

Of course with all these you have to make sure your hardware is totally compatible by actually saving an image and restoring it or at least booting the restore program and checking you can see the backup images on the media.  I had a series of HP Media Center towers and it seemed like every time I assumed the new tower was close enough to the old that the imaging program I am using should work without issue, some unpleasant surprise happens when I actually have to restore.  I had to jump around to various imaging brands due to minor HD controller differences.

But if the hw is not an issue these things are point and click now.  Very intuitive to use.

Well, it isn't meant to be that way. It just grew that way. With enough effort, anything ought to be possible. But that is imho something that requires a lot of time, effort and... money. (I think a commercial company would be the only one with enough staying powe to make it actually convenient to use and easy to understand...)

Plus you have to figure Explorer has so many quirks that if it is ever fixed it will need to be a complete rewrite.  MS is ignoring it as long as possible.  But some day they may have to byte the bullet and do it.  Which will erase all the utilities that hook into it.  When it does happen it will likely be a surprise.  Who would invest in something with not much in the way of return?

I took the easy way out and restored the Macrium image.  At least text is slightly less blurred and video does not look washed out.

US Open Tennis is happening this week and next.  Usually the Women's Singles Quarters have the best matches(next Tuesday.)  Last year they showed live video of 7 courts for free.  This year I don't know if you get to watch on ESPN3 if you go through the usopen.org web site.  But if you are on a .edu domain you get free ESPN3 access anyway.

It looks like Serena will tie Steffi Graf's records barring some misfortune.

General Software Discussion / Readon HD 7310 Blurred text with overall faded look
« Last post by MilesAhead on September 04, 2015, 06:59 AM »
I updated my Laptop to the late3st drivers since it has had blurry text since day one.  Now it is even worse.  It seems the more I try to adjust it with Catalyst Control Center the worse it gets.  I tried "reset to factory defaults" and that was no improvement.

With the old driver at least video looked good.  Now video seems to have too much brightness.  Of course no matter how I calibrate color, brightness, contrast, gamma, there is no improvement.

Here's a screen shot to show how crappy text looks in any browser.

Finally got 40.0.3 compiled along with a patch:

  https://bugzilla.red...w_bug.cgi?id=1256875
  https://bugzilla.moz...w_bug.cgi?id=1127752

Yes, different platform :)

Still have crashing, but perhaps there will be less.  Just tried tweaking:

check you have OMTC disabled (in about:config layers.offmainthreadcomposition.enabled should be false)

So it's possible (likely even?) some of the crashes here are not related to the original report.

Don't know about that.  But it seems no matter which FF version I run I see periods where it goes unresponsive.  I suspect all that stuff it does as you type now fills up the queues with crap.  I might only have 2 tabs open not doing anything yet and they sit with spinning circles even though the network is live.  Stranger all the time.

Perhaps not an "issue" with the technical revamping of the forum.  But it may be a good time to comment on something that has struck me.  When looking through New items/posts sometimes I notice something about NANY 2014 or even NANY 2013 in a big headline.  It just seems like it may give a newb the impression that stuff has not been updated for some time.

Like if I go to a programmer's page and see the latest updates for utilities are 2010 then I figure there will not be any more updates.  I wonder if anyone casually perusing for the first time sees the date and just leaves figuring it is old news?

In exploring this forum, if I click on 'bottom', it gives me a choice of 'top' or 'last'.
When I click on 'top', it gives me 'bottom' and 'last'.
I'm just letting you guys know that there is something seriously wrong here!
If you click on 'top', it should take you to where it says 'top'.
And when you click on 'bottom', you should go to where it says 'bottom'.
It's ass-backwards! You guys? Hello?

I've actually never noticed those links before... They're quite handy.

I think there used to be a "go down" link at the top of the thread instead of "bottom".
I guess it is not possible but I find the "go to first unread" when a thread has new replies very useful.  You don't have to guess how many new replies there are or read them in reverse order.  Just click the nub and you are at the first one.

Edit: On some other forums the list of updated threads has a quasi-button on the left of each.  Click it and you are at the first unread in that thread.

This utility seems a bit different than most.  It may be worth a look:

It used to be simple to use 32 bit context menu shell extensions in 64 bit Windows.  You simply launched the 32 bit explorer.exe that is in the Windows\SysWow64 folder.  Not anymore.  MS changed it without any explanation I am aware of.  So now the choices are write a 64 bit extension and a 32 bit extension, or put the user in a position of using a 32 bit File Manager capable of using 32 bit extensions on 64 bit systems, or finding some tool that bridges the gap so that 32 bit extensions can be displayed in the Context Menu of 64 bit explorer.

The 32 bit extensions were made easier by a free wizard that would create the code skeleton for Visual Studio 6.  I have no idea if it works in the new editions of Visual Studio.  Also I am unaware of such a wizard implemented for free in 64 bits.

A different approach would be more feasible in my estimation.  Although not rocket science writing shell extensions that impement the IContextMenuN (where N is 1 2 or 3) series of interfaces has the frustrating side effect that on every test run explorer.exe hangs onto the DLL. Meaning you have to kill explorer.exe before you can edit and recompile.

A lot of work.

Surely someone likes the new forum?

I prefer the new look.

I find it easier on the eyes, especially with the purple border.
-cranioscopical (August 31, 2015, 01:29 PM)

I am bordering on liking it.  But I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.
1538
Having said that, I am open to tweaking colors and styles.

The ability to use skins would be ideal.  Especially since a color scheme that is fine for a desktop can show with very fuzzy text on a Laptop.  Usually if there are 3 or 4 skins to choose from one will be much easier to read.  One can use Color Toggle type addons but with skins you can get them and forget them instead of toggling with each site.

I dislike everything new.  I don't hate the new forum.  That would indicate I will like it later on.  :)

MoveIt 1.3.3.3  Reactivated the hit test for Snap to Quadrant.  This determines the mouse pointer is on the caption bar(the window is being dragged) when the keys are released.

>I found this Q-Dir that has all similar "xplorer2 pro" features<

Has anyone tried Q-Dir performing multiple operations on large files?  It is updated so often I cannot keep up with the version numbers.  But I think the last time I tried this experiment was over 3 months ago.  Started copying a video file, over a GB, then do some other stuff while that was going on.  Totally got unstable on me.

MultiCommander is supposed to be truly multi-threaded. I have it installed but haven't done anything with it yet.  I have too many hotkey things that pop up Explorer windows.  :)

Is there a setting to show newest posts at top of threads?
I can't find it if so.

Edit:  Found it.  Never mind.  :)

Are donationcredits supposed to be showing up?  And history?  Just curious as they don't seem to be.

I see stats for donation credits and number of messages.  I do not see any preferences to set how threads are shown.  Also I do not see a post history.

For example: James Garner in Cash McCall.

One of my favorite films and books.  Of course in the story McCall doesn't plunder businesses.  He builds them up then sells them at a profit.  Kind of like The Loan Ranger shooting the gun out of the bad guy's hand instead of just plugging the guy through the heart.

But I did enjoy pissing off some chefs by ordering "a burnt steak" in various restaurants.  Actually if you can get them to burn it the taste is rather like steaks at a cookout.

I don't see "new replies to your posts" or anything other than a list of forums(and the already mentioned "unread topics.")

There's actually very little of "Hey, check out this site/product/video because it's a good site/product/video."

That reminds me of auto dealership ads.  They blare on about being number one in sales for their region.  All that tells me is to be prepared for high pressure and bait and switch tactics.  Why would I care how successful the dealership is?  The only conceivable reason would be if lifetime maintenance was thrown in with the purchase and I was afraid they would go out of existence before I got my free tune ups and brake jobs.

It's like who cares if anything is printed in the encyclopedia.  Just buy a set from me because I sell more sets than anyone else.  Strange logic!

One of the lesser-publicized facts of the recent hacking of the Ashley Madison website, is that nearly all of the female accounts were fake -- created by the company to make it look like the site was active and popular: http://gizmodo.com/a...-database-1725558944

This seems to be the standard operating procedure of website these days, where seeming to be popular is a necessary first lie.

I remember when the internet explosion was happening.  I checked out a few of the dating sites.  Membership was free.  But communicating with women cost money.  I got these invites from women with pictures.  It was obvious that the women who posed for the pictures would not have any trouble getting dates.  More like they would have trouble keeping undesirable guys from communicating.  I never sent a communication because I was sure the scam was send invites to suckers(er, I mean male clients of the service) to get them to pay to send messages to the babes.  Then the babes beg off for some contrived reason.  They have to because they are fictional characters.  It is not worth the effort to try to get $5 or $10 back so the suckers just cancel the service.  Same old scam, new ad copy.  :)
