General Software Discussion / Re: Quizo QTTabbar

thought i may as well mention this now i've had another look at the settings.

you can have a single hotkey to create a new folder/file. this suits me, i'm not too bothered about having a button to do it. and now i've realised that vista doesn't select the extension when renaming from a F2 hit i'm not too fussed about the show/hide extension request i made.

thanks, PhilB66 and Curt. i'm looking at both of your suggestions, though it would still be nice to just do everything with QTTabBar.

Curt, is there a quick way of changing the keyboard shortcuts in QTTabBar. i don't seem to be able to do so - i already had the new item plugin installed but it doesn't have a hot key associated with it on my system. edit: i've just realised how to change it.

i'd also had a quick look at how to create a plugin before making my original post but i didn't understand any of it. are there any tutorials for writing for QTTabBar, i can't find anything online.

i've just started using QTTabBar with vista and i'm impressed enough not to bother installing Directory Opus.

a couple of things i do miss that i was doing with DO:

a) create new folder: from a single click button and/or a shortcut of F12.

b) show/hide extension for known file types: also from a single click button toggle.

anyone know how to get something like those working with QTTabBar?

that is cool.

what? you aren't using DialogMove. dear oh dear.

No! Never even heard of it  :o

DialogMove history: https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=3097.0

I've changed my mind about that AeroSnap. it keeps displaying an annoying empty window - obviously meant to be hidden but it doesn't fully disappear when minimized. won't be using it for that reason, otherwise it was pretty good.

[edited because i put "Grid" instead "Dialog" above.]

oh yeah, and whilst i'm here.

i have to say that DialogMove works brilliantly in Vista.

in XP i'd sometimes get i bit of a redraw 'jump' as the dialog window jumped to the cursor. that isn't noticeable with Vista because of how it fades in with the dialog window.

what? you aren't using DialogMove. dear oh dear.

oh my god. it's worse than i thought.

AeroSnap is something they've made to 'copy' something that IS going to be part of windows 7.

in other words, it's microsoft that's nicked the idea from GridMove.

edit:

i can forgive them. it actually works very well. the restore window to it's original size part is a good idea. obviously nowhere near as flexible as GridMove but it does do the basics very well indeed.

(maybe Microsoft just read the DC forum and nicked the idea ages ago.)

this 'AeroSnap' thing http://www.aerosnap.de/index_eng.htm looks remarkably like the original description i made for Jgpaiva's Gridmove, i.e. drag to screen edge to resize window. not tried it yet though.

is it a coincidence, is it a copy. well, it's free so i guess there's no reason to complain.

i'm assuming Gridmove and Dialogmove will be built into windows 7...

...if not, how about getting together, Jgpaiva, and building these into non autohotkey based utils?

nice to see you back Ralf. i hope it's not a fleeting visit. (the transportica door is still open to you.)

using the free version of antivir too (after allen recommended it a while back on the forum). seems fine. it's warned me of a few things that appeared legitimate - whether it's any better than something like grisoft AVG i don't know. less resource hungry i'm assuming.

one thing to remember - the free antivir doesn't do email scanning.

here's a good link for an overview of what to expect from boot loaders: http://www.multiboot....co.uk/managers.html

having said that, i obviously decided to ignore what it said and tried the Acronis loader anyway.

back when windows 98 was all the rage i was using XOSL and it certainly was magical back then with what it could do. i'm tempted to give it a try but you'll see the drawbacks to using it on the page i linked to above. nothing a bit of time and effort can't resolve though.

worth thinking about...

...maybe i'll unplug the other hard drives this time.
1513
f0dder, i shall have to invest in this GetDataBack thingy - because i know it's going to be required at some point. i think i've mentioned Davory in the past - it worked for me several years back when every other recovery software failed. how well Davory works by today's standards i don't know (at the time, i was alarmed that there could be such a difference between detection software).

i didn't have any dynamic disks (though i did convert one about a month ago - not the one that was killed).

i didn't mention when the drives partition was really removed. it happend when the Acronis loader was installed - not actually when i disabled it. i noticed one of my drives had gone immediately, but i first assumed it was just a small partition - the 3rd and last one on my raid drive - i wasn't concerned as i thought it was merely hidden by the loader.

rather than waffle on, it seems like what happened is just the same as the Linux install problems. the menu selections you make when installing these drive tamporing things can't be trusted.

in the past i would have done what zaine said and unplug the other drives. i'd just become over confident by how well everything else had worked with the GAG loader, etc.
1514
sorry to hear about that, tsaint. this tip may not have helped you but it can be handy to provide sensible names to each drive, i.e. if the menu that appears provided drive names/label information then it obviously helps when making a selection. so xp may be on drive/partition C: but you could also give it the label "xp_01" or something.

since messing about with all this dual booting stuff i've realised that the bios order of the drives and what it considers the boot order doesn't necessarily match what software/boot loaders and operating systems consider to be the drive order - that's where the accidental deletions occur (but probably not if you can give labels to things).

i shan't be investigating what Acronis have to say about it, 40hz. they really could not say anything that i'd consider a satisfactory answer. i didn't do anything unusual during the install and disabling process - their website says that several partitions and drives will work with their boot loader thing. i was prepared to fix the mbr or something like that but not restore an entire drive - that it had no reason to touch.

i shan't be trying any more dual boot experiments. i'll stick with the GAG floppy loader - that works and doesn't destroy things.
1515
oh i love computers. there's always an adventure to be had - all without leaving the safety of an armchair (i don't have an office chair).

the partition is now recovered (although it was reported as "bad").

software used: Active Partition Recovery.

i shall now crawl back under my rock. (i daren't check to see if xp still boots.)
1516
er, correction. it's now found 41 partitions - i obviously am dreaming. there's no other explanation now.
1517
i'm currently scanning it with another program - which at the moment is telling me it's found 8 partitions. some bad, some not bad. well, that's nice then isn't it. with a bit of luck i'll be able to pick the correct one out of the 8 and have it working.

at least, i've learnt how "curiosity killed the cat" - Acronis OS Selector did it.

1518
General Software Discussion / Acronis total dirt OS selector - kills hard drives!
« Last post by nudone on November 25, 2008, 02:40 PM »
i'm still wondering if i'm dreaming this but having pinched myself several times i 'think' i'm awake.

as i've got vista and xp nicely working on the same hard drive (on different partitions) i thought i'd have a go at making things smoother when selecting which to boot.

Acronis OS Selector seemed like a good idea to try. it sort of worked - almost. i was prepared to mess about with it a bit to get it working fully if things didn't go right first off.

so, vista booted fine, xp wouldn't boot.

no problem i thought i'll just disable the Acronis loader and go back to how i had things working with the GAG floppy boot loader.

how nice to find that after loading up vista and checking if all my partitions and drives are there i find that the Acronis loader has completely wiped out a 250 gig hard drive - one where i keep all my data. lovely. thank you Acronis, i will make sure you are first on my Christmas list.

the drive is now an 'unallocated partition'. i've tried a couple of programs to scan for lost partitions and they've found nothing. absolutely fantastic.

so, just an innocent bit of messing about has wiped an entire drive - one that the Acronis rubbish shouldn't have touched anyway - there weren't any operating systems on it.

now, at this point i would normally be preparing a noose to put around my neck after losing all that data (that's everything i've created and saved as reference material), but i was using MirrorFolder to keep a duplicate of everything in realtime on another drive. so i 'believe' everything is safe - if nothing else goes wrong.

there's a moral in there somewhere - possibly a few.

here's the bottom line (literally)... don't even consider using that Acronis piece of sh*t OS loader. how dumb can a piece of software be - Acronis should be ashamed to have created such an evil program. what a load of b*stards.
1519
i suppose it could be a mechanical thing.

i don't think it's anything to do with fragmentation as the noise was there from the first installation of xp, 3 years ago.

i do wonder if it's the position of the partition - i was hoping it might just be that vista behaves itself better. i know that raptor drives were always considered to be noiser than a typical 7200rpm drive so i just accepted the machine gun fire sound that they make - just that the sound ain't there with vista.
1520
something i've noticed, that i hope the more technically minded of you may understand, is that vista is a lot quieter than xp - on my machine, at least.

i've two raptor drives in a raid 0 setup. xp is on the first partition of this setup and vista is on the 2nd partition (of the same setup).

when using xp, the drives sound not unlike the handheld drilling machines that workmen use to dig holes in the road.

when using vista the drives sound almost silent.

any idea as to why?

xp has been like this from day one so i just thought it was normal for these raptor drives to make a horrible noise.
1521
i can also confirm that Google Reader is now displaying the correct head in the clouds feed - with working links.

so it would appear the above .htacces problem was related to the google reader problem.

there doesn't appear to be much information on this online, just people providing explanations that the local machine must be infected - this obviously not being the case.
1522
well, the GAG boot floppy certainly keeps things nice and simple. but...

not sure if i've configured the floppy correctly but once the operating system is selected, it doesn't actually continue to boot - i have to reboot (with the floppy then removed) for the complete boot process to work.

i was expecting things to work as i've seen with other boot loaders, i.e. you select the operating system to boot and the boot process continues after that - without having to restart the machine.

i know i've not enabled 'drive swap' or something on the GAG floppy so maybe it's just that.
1523
just thought i'd do a quick reply for anyone else considering something similar to the "vista on a partion of a raid 0 drive" thing.

first two attempts didn't quite work. may have just been vista updates that ruined everything as things appeared to work for the first couple of boots.

after making a little effort to see what others had to say online, i've found this to work (for my setup)...

main drive is:

raid 0
3 partitions
1st partition (primary) = XP
2nd partition (primary) = Vista
3rd partition = data

using GAG boot loader (from a floppy for the moment) to select which partition to boot and hide the other primary partition (i have a few other drives in the machine so hiding the non required primary helps keep my drive letters in the right order).

i also loaded in the latest nforce raid drivers during the vista install - which i didn't do the first couple of times when things didn't quite work.

i haven't gone through the vista updates yet so maybe things will just grind to a halt again after that.

original reading material that helped:

http://www.nforcersh...n-guide-vt66299.html

http://www.multiboot....co.uk/managers.html

http://gag.sourceforge.net/

if i don't mentioning anything again then the updates were successful.
1524
good question, urlwolf, and good reply, 40hz.

i'm now using 'mirrorfolder'. i was using 'genie-soft backup manger pro' but 'mirrorfolder' is a lot more useful.

it's just a pity it doesn't have built in ftp support (not that i can see anyway).
1525
ah, thanks for that then guys. if the mbr is definitely going to be the only issue then i'll go ahead and stick vista on.

and Carol's recovery console tip is something i'd never have considered so i'll do that too.

(if you don't hear from me again you know it all went wrong and i've thrown the pc in a skip.)
