Living Room / Re: Has the LHC destroyed the world yet?

lol, if it ends, the actual reason wont concern me too much  ;)

There's a huge pin outside in my backyard?  :o

 ;D ;D
153
Ahhh when i tried this time it was already zoomed, so I fixed it up, possibly the zoom was just taking too long and I clicked away before it had a chance.  (I was only out by about 40 miles lol)
154
;) I tried that f0dder, I got a bit closer in but at that time I couldn't get close enough to be accurate, which surprised me since i saw some people (app for instance) were living in parks lol.  I'm close will have a look again later.
155
Well placing pins too exactly i found difficult, sometimes i was in the ocean at others in the wrong state  lol, no matter, however, I'm now not far from home  ;)

Living Room / Re: Microsoft granted patents for PageUp and PageDn keystrokes!
« Last post by Grorgy on September 10, 2008, 01:31 PM »
I really don't consider this all that outrageous given that people have placed copyrights on stupider things.

Just because others are even sillier is not, in my opinion, a reason to condone further stupidity.  Surely both microsoft and the patents office have more constructive things they could be doing?

Oh and by the way, i am a bit of a fanatic now lol. I was a fan of Kaspersky, but it started doing on odd things on my system, I was frequently, every time i'd log in, getting error reports which made no sense to me, so I looked around, and ESET, well it had a tick from mouser, at the time anyway, it uses nod, which seems to be a favourably reviewed and well thought of AV and I've set it and more or less forget it.  It updates maybe 2 or 3 times a day, depending on when they release one, i have it set to check every hour and on startup, but not more than once an hour.  So I am a happy eset person  :-*

wellllll from their help file

For seamless operation of ESET Smart Security, the system should meet the following hardware and software requirements:

Windows 2000, XP, 2003

400 MHz 32-bit (x86) / 64-bit (x64)
128MB RAM of system memory
35MB available space
Super VGA (800 x 600)

Windows Vista

1 GHz 32-bit (x86) / 64-bit (x64)
512MB RAM of system memory
35MB available space
Super VGA (800 x 600)

So not all, but most of what would be out there, in the windows world anyway!

General Software Discussion / Re: List of newbie questions regarding software
« Last post by Grorgy on September 09, 2008, 12:40 PM »
The USB output just lets you connect the notetaker to your PC through a USB port, dont have to play around trying to record it onto the pc some other way.  Mine came with some bundled software to make the exchange easy.

Short model years can be good, I got a superseded model for less than 1/2 its original price, ok its not quite as flash as the newer models but its better than the ones at the same price i got this one for  ;)

It sounds like its becoming less open source. Is that the impression you get?

Ive not looked but...something like paintdotnet (which I bet you have curt lol) would enable you with just a little work to make your own frames in next to no time.  Not as easy perhaps but more rewarding  :)

I found a free one somehow called The Font Thing, what i like about it is it lets you look at previews of a selection of fonts at one time, its free but it is old, its from about 1999 2000, the lady who wrote it doesnt seem to be at all active on her website but the program works fine on all versions of XP anyway, never tried it on Vista, this is its page http://members.ozemail.com.au/~scef/

Once it was all running it seemed ok, though the little laptop does seem a tad perkier without but it might be more of a perception thing than a real thing.

Well, I'm using ESET smart security, I am 'immunized' by spybot S&D which I also sometimes run as an on demand scanner, and have the free editions of super antispyware and malwarebytes which I also sometimes run as an on demand scan.  And even more occasionally i will run an antirootkit finder.  So far, and to me this is the test that is most useful, only 1 minor spyware infection i think, i ran all those spyware things and its gone and never reappeared.  I really like the idea of Threatfire, but it seems to slow up the boot time a lot and also seems to stop other programs starting properly, missing icons in system tray that sort of thing, so I don't bother with it, more trouble than it is worth to me.  Touch wood, (Taps self on head)

Edit, ESET here in Australia do a 50% student discount so could be worth a look if you decide on it

My pc stinks though  :-[

hey, so long as it works, its all good, some of these computers I drool over, some I laugh at, but so long as you can do what you need to do and have a little fun as well is all that matters!
172
Isn't this the purpose of beta releases, to test them in real world environments and fix errors?

They probably should not have released it with such enthusiasm as they did till the bugs had been squashed, but still, it is a beta version.

General Software Discussion / Re: How do you manage your email?
« Last post by Grorgy on September 06, 2008, 08:19 PM »
I delete it, some stays on gmail, because i couldn't be bothered deleting it, stuff i bring into outlook, hangs around for a while then is...deleted.  If its important then its actioned at the time, but 99.9% of my email is such ephemeral stuff it just isn't worth the complexity of trying to sort it or back it up.  When i was working for a large telco at one point it was the same, most, if not all of it, was only of any interest to me for a few hours or days, perhaps a week or 2 then it passes into history.  I must say though i regret having lost some of the jokes  ;D
175
Like most browsers i guess, it has its place and will be good for some things, others will be better at others.  Googlephobes will no doubt find reasons to loathe it, fan boys reasons to love it, most of us I think will probably use it if it does what we want it to do and maybe even just for google services.
