Don't know about the desktop specifically but http://www.x-rates.com is one of the most useful sites for exchange rates and history that I have found.

Thanks for the heads up and the evaluation, Curt. One of the reasons that I follow the RSS feed from Giveaway of The Day is that I often find better, more interesting (and almost always free) programs in the comments made by naysayers. This has several advantages perhaps paramount being the situation which I'm not facing. I must do an OS reinstall on one of my machines and all of the GAOTD applications will become toast in the process. C&P!!

I had just been looking at things like this recently as I was having a brain phart. I seem to remember that there was a hot key to force Screen Saver NOW (e.g. to blank your screen in a hurry) similar to the "preview" button on the Display Properties page. I still haven't found it - does anyone know??   :tellme:

I agree that NPR is great. But it ain't "everywhere". Until recently I had been a long haul trucker in the US for almost 13 years. VERY discouraging to get hooked on an NPR program only to loose it going down the road whilst tuning madly trying to find another station. (Nebraska does an admirable job of covering the state, BTW. Especially traversing the 450 miles across I80.)

Then there's the problem that, even though Morning Edition is very good, they really screwed up when they "shuffled" Bob Edwards. Man, that was so stupid. I think that he's the greatest!

My solutions to the above (and several other's noted) were two:
1. XM Radio (which picked up Bob in a flash and, basically, built a whole channel around him). This also pretty well solved the repeating songs and similar problems.
2. Audible.com where you can subscribe to your favorite programs and never miss a beat ... as well as listen on your computer and/or portable MP3, Palm or whatever.

The Google Desktop has a handy NPR gadget, too.

There are lots of recording programs around - many very good (e.g. Audacity). Total Recorder costs but, I agree, it absolutely rocks for quality and functionality. I've been using it for years and have never regretted paying for it and all of the add-ons. Their support is great, too!   8)

An interesting and annoying problem to be sure! Especially as storage grows and grows. But I searched from the top level on the DC forum and only had three hits for Volumouse - none of which were from you. Could the problem be elsewhere/different than you suspect??

BTW: Volumouse rocks!!  :greenclp:  I use it ALL the time - for screen brightness, too. I'd be interested in any comments/discussion/tweaks on it.

AT&T voice are quite good. I have Mike and Crystal. IMHO the NeoSpeech are even better. Hope you give them a test listen, at least. I'm pretty sure that you can do that on the Text Aloud site. The quality becomes an even more important issue when you crank up the speed as I do. I have found that you can quickly accommodate to listening to fast input; "speed listening".

I'd like to add a comment to Tinjaw's remarks: GET IT!!

I've been using Text Aloud for some years - used to use it all day long while driving big trucks all over North America. It has read literally VOLUMES to me. Also great for proofreading your text for final edit. It's amazing how often you can overlook your own mistake in the 'printed' page especially when it's something that didn't trigger the spell checker, e.g. contextual errors like mistyping 'that' instead of 'than'.

I have AT&T Natural Voices but prefer the NeoSpeach offerings. Ten out of Ten!! Get it!

No, you're not a miserable cuss. It sounds to me as though you have a life and have grown. A lot of those folks are trying to relive the past.

On the other hand, the folks who organize and promote these things are probably the ones that were gregarious and outgoing in HS and perhaps continue to be so. I suspect that we are among kindred spirits here and not part of the above mentioned. We are more ... shall we say ... introspective.

Haha. Double that and (now) more for the class of '63. I've kept in touch with the few classmates that I found worthwhile on my own. And since I had little to do with the rest of the slobs then I was certainly not going to cross the street to see them 40 years later.

The thing that really frosted my socks was the gold digging "year book" outfits hounding me with post cards ("Authorized by the Principal"!!) and then the phone calls - including my relatives, name coincidences and who knows what else. They were trying to track me down for current information to publish ... to all those bozo's and, of course, get a fee in the process. I ripped a strip off of one particularly persistent caller then told her that I'd been a spy for many years now and couldn't tell her anything - or else I'd have to ... well, you know the rest.

Stay home with the beauty you've come to appreciate. You'll only be disappointed and annoyed if you go. IMHO.

PS. Make sure that you haven't installed something that has turned your DMA off. I've had it happen on several occasions. You can use Nero or similar to check as most copy software (some at least!) normally checks DMA on program launch.

There is a free Microsoft utility called 'bootvis' which does exactly what you want. One of their numerous semi-secret tools. I'm sure you'll find easily with a search on their site.
