General Software Discussion / Re: Let's Fork The Thread! Linux Notetaking Thread!
« Last post by tinjaw on September 09, 2009, 10:46 AM »
It can be done on linux, but it would take a lot of work.

You would have to query the browser and grab the info.

However, I think the best route would be to use an extension to the browser to grab the requested info and format it properly for use in Notecase.

quite a nice game, i'm currently playing v1.0.3. just curious, what's in the 1.1 update?

Thanks.

Unfortunately I never got to v1.1. The code is still in my repository and I might update AoO someday.

Living Room / Re: What happens to your online life when you die?
« Last post by tinjaw on August 20, 2009, 08:31 PM »
I am thinking that I will declare an "Online Executor" to take care of my virtual affairs when I die. Maybe I will provide a private key and passphrase in my will and an encrypted document with directions of what I want done. Maybe go so far as to have python scripts set up to run.

Sounds like an interesting topic for a master's thesis in computer law too.

I'm not volunteering my time, but merely a suggestion. Start with a wiki to describe what you want and let everybody contribute.

I ordered some inexpensive good quality keyboard stickers from (http://www.4keyboard...d-sticker-p-234.html) and I now have a colemak keyboard. I had a laptop-style keyboard that was loosing its letters so I blackened them out with a marker. Now all I need to do is get up the gumption to start learning to type with it.

This may be the first (modern) 3D movie I go see at the theater.

I really really really really really really hope this isn't a disappointment. TRON rocked.

I was procrastinating looking to change my FARR theme today and was wondering if anybody created a FARR Theme Gallery where I can see browse all of the themes available.

Living Room / Re: Interesting Development on GOG.com
« Last post by tinjaw on July 31, 2009, 11:02 AM »
Hopefully GOG and Codemasters can reach an agreement. I cannot think of a reason why customers who have already purchased the games are allowed to continue to have a copy of the game stored at GOG.com and be allowed to download it at any time and as many times as they wish. I can equally accept that the game will no longer be able to be purchased until it is again under license to be sold to new customers. Hopefully such an agreement can be reached. My fingers are crossed.

I'm almost crying after watching that SNL video. Funniest thing I have seen in a while from SNL.

P.S. Please join me in supporting EFF. I donated again recently because of all of the #$(*% that is going on these days. I am hoping they will lead a class action lawsuit against Amazon and the publisher of 1984 some day.

ASP.NET / Re: Simple form using visual web developer
« Last post by tinjaw on July 24, 2009, 03:32 PM »
I don't know of any, but this google search seems to have some hits.

I don't know if you are just new to Visual Web Developer/ASP or if you are new to database development as a whole. If the latter, then you may not know that what you are doing is considered CRUD. That term may help you filter out generalized tutorials on the subject.

Ehtyar,

I was going to send you $3 of Donation Credits for finding this.

But then I realized you weren't kidding about the time it can suck you into spending there.

So I decided you owe me $3 of Donation Credits for stealing my time.

 :P

Great find.

It appears that FARR is a UI that appeals to you. You might be able to achieve what you want via FARR plugins. For example, it would be easy to provide a grep search of documents (probably via a indexing engine) through a plugin. As long as you had the appropriate viewers for all the various documents on the systems you should be able to view the documents easy enough.

You should have called the KKK when the BMI folks were there. They probably would have surrounded the BMI folks and told them to fork over $25,000 each if they wanted to leave the county alive.

General Software Discussion / Re: extract text from pdf
« Last post by tinjaw on July 18, 2009, 11:26 PM »
Unfortunately you aren't going to get any formatting. Afterall you are doing PDF to TXT and TXT has no formatting. The headers and the footers are the things I mentioned you would have to strip out. Those are the 3 TaTP / Ta (an)TP and Ta (an)TP / Ta (an)TP 4 that I mentioned. I imagine that the would either be few enough to strip out by hand or some glob or regex should handle it. As for doing them all at once, you will need to write a batch file to handle that as pdftoptext appears to only take one file as an argument. No, this is fully automated, but it sure beats retying all that stuff in.

thanks
where do I download the pdf2text?

Steve had it...

XPdf (Open Source freeware)
http://www.foolabs.com/xpdf/
"Xpdf is an open source viewer for Portable Document Format (PDF) files. (These are also sometimes also called 'Acrobat' files, from the name of Adobe's PDF software.) The Xpdf project also includes a PDF text extractor, PDF-to-PostScript converter, and various other utilities. "
