Well done!

It's amazing just how annoying we let the small things become.

Good news everyone! I figured out the culprit! Virtualbox was causing the icon to mess up. I went on a rampage and started uninstalling anything that added a network interface (hamachi and and virtualbox were all I had) as soon as I uninstalled virtualbox (don't remember the exact version, 4.something) the icon changed to the spinning blue circle, and then showed my wifi signal strength! *Happy Face*  ;D Kinda mad that virtualbox is the culprit tho, I really liked it. I guess it isn't to bad though, because I never really used it on my laptop, I used it more on my desktop. I'm just glad I got my icon working now.

I've had kind of this problem, the network, (LAN), icon sits there with the spinning donut saying it's still trying to get an IP from the DHCP server, (never mind that it's manually assigned  ::) ).

It seems to revert to normal after a few system boots, (in the normal course of usage).

It's currently sitting there with an exclamation mark telling me the Unidentified Network, (VirtualBox), has no Internet access, (well duh...it's not running), yet other times it will look completely normal, (with VirtualBox not running).

I think it comes down to it just being borked....just like it's always been.
Thats windows for you. I guess Im just going to have to deal with it. I haven't installed enough garbage on my laptop yet to slow it down enough for me to need to reinstall windows yet, so I'll just have to live with it until then

I've checked the add/remove program list, and never ran across  Bonjour. I guess I could look again to be sure. What would I need to do to check if it is an icon cache corruption?

edit:just got home from college, and when I woke up my laptop (from the screensaver, not standby or hibernation) the icon has now changed to the icon of the signal bars with the yellow * on top.
edit2:after restarting my laptop, the icon is now back to the red x

1. I tried disabling it, and restarted (problem still there)
2. I have a third party tool, not for my built in wifi, it is for my usb card that I use to connect my ds to the internet.
3. I hate iTunes, and therefore do not have it installed.

2b. I uninstalled the third party tool, and after restarting my laptop, the problem is still there.

Living Room / win7 wifi shows as disconnected when actually connected
« Last post by nite_monkey on October 07, 2011, 09:05 AM »
Windows strikes again! I'm running windows 7 pro x64 on my Dell Vostro 1520, and for the longest time the wifi on it worked perfectly fine, and the icon in the system tray showed my signal strength. But here recently it just shows the little red x that appears when you are not connected to the internet. However, when I click on the icon, it shows that I am indeed connected to the internet. I've tried uninstalling the drivers so that I could reinstall them, but you know how windows is. Even if you uninstall the drivers for something, you aren't really uninstalling the drivers. So when I went to the device manager and told it to search for new hardware, it found my wifi card, and reinstalled the drivers (the ones that I supposedly removed) It is very annoying that that stupid icon always shows me as being disconnected. I use that icon to tell whenever my internet randomly decides to die on me. (it has been going out every five minutes here recently) Any help on fixing this would be really appreciated.

Well they have an online editor available for youtubers to edit their videos straight from the website. It should be possible for  youtube to edit the ads straight onto the videos if they really wanted to. ;D

Deozaan, I think  he meant ABP for Adblock Plus.

Jim

Ah. Thanks. :)
Oops, yeah I meant ABP not ADP. I never spell check my work. As for the hosts file, goto http://someonewhocares.org/hosts/

I keep forgeting that youtube has ads since I always install ADP and modify my hosts file whenever I reinstall windows.

That kind of sucks. I did some more searching, and I ran across a program called connectify. If does what I am wanting, but it only supports wpa encryption, which kind of defeats the purpose, since my current wifi already uses that encryption. Looks like I might have to stick with the slow software that I am currently using.
163
I recently bought a usb wifi card that supports being a wifi card and being an AP so that I could use my DS(first gen) on the internet without having to drop my wifi down from wpa to wep/open.
The device I bought doesn't really have a specific name (I couldn't really find one on the package) but in windows, it shows up as "Realtek RTL8188CU Wireless LAN 802.11n USB 2.0 Network Adapter"
Right now I am using some software called "Realtek 11n usb wireless lan utility" The software is ok at best. It is kind of slow, and sometimes when I plug in the device, the software won't work. I was wondering if there is any other program that will let me configure my usb card to either run as a wifi card or as an access point. I have looked, but I can't seem to find anything. Any help would be much appreciated.

JGPaiva's GridMove and Ahk Tools / Re: Gridmove showcased on hak5

Cool, thanks for the tip, nite_monkey! (and thanks for the direct link to the segment on GridMove, I'm on a mobile network and bandwidth is precious :) )
np. I know how bad it can be having to go through a long video to find just the part you want to watch, and then wasting bandwidth on the part you don't care about.

I don't know if anyone has heard of hak5, but it is a weekly video podcast about tech and modding things. The newest episode features Gridmove on it. If anyone has never used gridmove, or wants to learn more about it, then you should watch the part of this episode where Darren talks about it.

No one has mentioned ImDisk I've used it for a couple of years now and I have had no problems with it.
168
I just tried it out (win 7 x64) and it didn't seem to work.
169
I don't know what you would call it, so I guess I will call it a plugin for windows explorer.

I am looking for a plugin/program that will allow me to just double click on an archive and it will open the contents of the archive in an explorer window, just like what windows does when you double click on a zip file. Is this possible to do? The closest (and my current solution) is to use a program called universal extractor, which lets me right click on an archive and click uniextract. This is ok, but it just shows a cmd window stating the file it is currently extracting.

Thanks for the help.

General Software Discussion / Re: Splashtop: Linux for Windows users

Splashtop is built into my desktop's Asus Motherboard. I have it disabled, and haven't used it in a long time, but when I did use it, it used a rebranded version of firefox for the browser. I might have to reenable it and install the newest version and see how it has progressed

have you tried using the built in function without installing the software? On my laptop(dell) I don't have the software installed when I was using windows, and the function still worked, and it also works in ubuntu which is what I use now. My mom's laptop (toshiba) also works in windows without any special software.

General Software Discussion / Re: Google's thumbnail pop-ups

I don't really mind the thumbnails, because at least for me, I have to click on the little magnifying glass before they even show up. So I don't ever see them.

I will give you a hint. (hints only redeemable in powerpoint 2007. Hints may not be bundled with complete give aways or any other offers. Limit one per customer)

It involves going to the animation tab, making sure the text box is selected (solid box around text), selecting custom animation, and using the motion paths\ draw custom motion path option in powerpoint... but thats the only hint you get from me...
