Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Change folder icon colour when folder empty
« Last post by magician62 on October 28, 2011, 10:53 AM »
Now I have been using the utility for a solid day, I was wondering if adding the ability to drop the root folder onto the window would be a simple task. I am finding I am processing various folders with the util, because it is so usefull :)

The only thing I have noticed, and suspect its system related is that sometimes you get all folders processed on the first run, other times its one or two, sometimes necessitating multiple presses (window refresh sometimes does't apper to do it). My first thought was that it might be related to the folder selection i.e. A snapshot is taken of all the folders within, and as i was adding folders for testing it was then not seeing them all.

Would it be possible to tweak the utility so that if a folder subsequently has content and is processed, then the standard system icon is returned.

I have also placed the icon on a shared drive, so the affects are seen across the network! Although I could have just put the .ico on both machines in the same folder.

Further info to my first statement The other machine on the network see's all the folder changes as they happen, and I only get some, untill after a few refreshes !

Is it possible to build into the code some sort of window refresh, which may overcome this?

From my own initial need, I can see the potential as a productivity tool. If at a later time it were extended you could have green for empty, orange to 1-9 items red for 10-99 items blue for 100-999 items .... etc Sell the idea to M$, they can incorporate it in Windows 2020, assuming we still have folders by then :)

Been testing and a few anomalies have appeared though until the first is resolved its hard to test the rest to see if its my system or other..

Attempt 1
Originally ran MTIcon from the zip, was able to add a root location and run a few tests, it basically functioned, though when I went to change the Root folder it was unable to and the contents dissapeared.

Attempt 2
Extracted MTIcon to a folder on the desktop.

I can select a Root folder from the pop up but nothing is displayed in the field
I can select icon path, and icon path is displayed.

On closing the program, the config.ini is created but RootFolder= is empty

If i manually set a RootFolder in the config, it works, but on attempting to change the RootFolder through teh program clears teh field and subsequently config.ini on close

Its as though the variable for RootFolder is fixed in memory or registry. Will try again after the bext reboot

The only thing then to check is if system files are automatically ignored, which at present it seems. And if all the folders that should be affected are, I have had mixed results so far, though the last test all that should were.

1/ only one level
2/ great idea as I just found desktop.ini. Though it may be that desktop.ini and thumbs.db are ignored, so its possible that system files are being ignored?
3/Any folder contining folders should be ignored. The reasoning is it will force the user to process each level.

The way I was thinking of it would be the user assigns an icon path/filename that is then used. This then permits customization per user. With the in-use folder reverting to the standard Icon.  Alternatively if a location for the icon and name is predefined, it would be quite easy for the user to drop the icon they want to use in that location

I have in the past used Rainbow Folders from http://www.english.aionel.net/ and Folderico from Shedko to manually assign a replacement icon

OK first we are working Win 7 (64) and only applicable to List or Details View

Either automatically (unlikely), or by processing a folder and its immediate subfolders (more Likely)

Change the colour of a folder if empty, including folders where thumbs.db is the only file that exists exists

Purpose: I have a folder containing a number of working folders, that I process the contents of. This is to give a quick visual indication of which folders remain to be worked on.

Note, I have a util to remove empty folder, but in this case I do not want to remove them as they will slowly be topped up again, and processed as and when.

TIA

Many thanks for trying, unfortunately  IE is the browser of choice. I will live with the current method of drag to Wordpad, copy all lines from wordpad to notepad. Maybe teh future will provide other options.

A new list each session is fine, though I can see there may be a benefit to some for it being maintained between sessions of use. Either way would work for my needs.

As mentioned earlier FF screwed my system some time back, so is rarely used, and lives on a stick :)

No Problems, with the UAC off. Its a great concept, but sometimes a real pain. I have a great utility, that must have it turned off, otherwise I can't use it, and unfortunately the developer is no longer with us to update it.

I can confirm it was the UAC causing the drag drop issue.

A utility that processes the links to a text file may still be benefficial.

First it would eliminate the need for enter, after each line, or preparing empty lines first.
Second it would eliminate moving hand to mouse to perform each enter operation.

Outcome, a lot faster processing. Simpler for those who tend to work one handed, i.e mostly/only mouse

I have used Word in the past. Usually create 1000's of lines, the copying teh result to a notepad. Interesting idea of using Wordpad, not tried that, unfortunately it didnt work. Though I now wonder if there are system issues. On dragging the imagelink to wordpad, my cursor changed to a red bordered circle with diagonal line (Prohibited Icon)! Same happened in Word. Will investigate further, as this could be why things are not working

From what I can tell IDM may have slightly different additional features to Getright, ( I have used getright for about 10 years, though it may have been longer, currently use the Pro version). As to if either would suitably replace what you currently use, I will leave to others to answer. Unfortunately the last time I installed Firefox, it screwed my system, and I had to spend a couple of days sorting it. The closest it gets now is a stick :)

Thanks for the reply. I am a bit concerned about using IDM, as I already run Getright (another paid program), which performs much of the same function, but for what I am trying to do, still seems to adds a number of extra steps.

The purpose of the util, is not necessarily to download the files at the link, just to extract the URL's

I did find Skwire's ClipTrap, which goes part-way there. though it doesn't have drag drop addition of new links.

« Last post by magician62 on August 26, 2011, 05:46 AM »
Most URL extractors I have found will take an HTML page and extract all URLs, but this is not what I am trying to do.
I am not looking for a downloader program, the URL are for later processing.

Scenario On Youtube, you are presented with thumbnails of other videos, each linking to their page.

What I want to be able to do is drag an image from Youtube onto "Program-X" and extract the URL
I want to be able to repeat this action so as to build a list of URL's for later processing, with each entry on a new line.
The list should be saveable in .txt format
Another optional would be the ability to copy all the URL for pasting elsewhere.

At present the steps are:-

Create .txt file
Open text file
Select thumbnail
Right click Thumbnail
Copy Shortcut
Select .txt file
Paste URL (either right click, paste or CTRL-V)
Enter (to move to next line for next entry)

The new idea should bring this down to
drag-drop
Save .txt file

TIA

I did an experiment, and set IE to Zero volume, then closed all instances of IE. On re-starting IE, volume was still Zeroed, though I have yet to see what happens on re-boot, will find that out in the morning. :)

Many thanks for the reply, Indie looks quite interesting, and is Win 7 compatable. Though your comment about app-specific volume control in Vista was interesting. I was not aware of the feature, moved from XP to 7, so have been playing, and it looks like it may serve my needs. I will also give Indie Volume a try after I get an better understanding of how the built in facility works, as it may provide extra functionality.
170
My first guess is this may not even be possible

Scenario:- Quite often I will be multitasking. On one monitor I may be watching a movie, or listening to music, whilst on another I might be surfing this forum, the web, or trying out a new application. Some website still insit on playing sound when you open them, which interupts what I want to listen too, the same with some older applications.

What I would like to be able to do is Whitelist applications or websites where I would like to here sound, and all the rest not hear a peep. Obviously this facility would be easily toggleable on/off.

Put simply I want to only hear what I want, not what others think I should hear.

One issue i can see is that the window/app i want to hear sound from, will likely be the one without focus.

Thank you both for the replies. I have installed scancode's solution, and it works perfect for my needs.

MilesAhead, your solution was an interesting approach, and has given me more insight into ahk, code examples are good, as it helps me to understand how something is done, allowing for possible extrapolation at a later date, when I can get my head around how it works.

Maybe the next generation will detect my thoughts for the need of a folder and create it with the name I am thinking at the time  :D

« Last post by magician62 on August 01, 2011, 09:56 AM »
I have searched the net, and found a few ways of doing this, but not they way I envisage.

In the right click menu under 'New', I am looking for an option like 'Folder (today)'

On selection it will create a New empty folder at the location selected, and with the name being

YYYYMMDD (Using the current date)

It might be useful to have configuration of date format for those that may have other uses.

If it already exists, a link would be much appreciated.

Many thanks for the reply. I can understand the concerns. I can adjust my workflow and probably accomplish the same with the new version of Switcheroo.

The file replacement appers to work ok. The only issue I can see is that it requires both files on the same drive.

Is this associated with the issue that existed where it was not the file swithed but the content in 1.0.3 build 1?

Ideally a multi drive environment should be supported

Post New Requests Here / IDEA: File replacer
« Last post by magician62 on July 24, 2011, 08:17 AM »
The idea came to me whilst using Switcheroo

Using a similar interface

First row is the 'Target'
Second row the 'Replacement'

Concept

Drag Target file to 'Target'
Drag Replacement file to 'Replacement'

On running the Replacement file is renamed to the target and then moved to replace the target (though the sequence may be slightly different to avoid conflicts)

Mouse only operation:-

Advantage two file drag-drop, and run. Total 3 actions (4 if confirm is an option)

Existing option
Use Switcheroo
Two drag-drop, switch, select Replacement, rightclick, delete, confirm. Total 7 actions

Using Windows (7)
Select target file, select filename, rightclick copy filename, select Replacement file, select filename, paste filename, select Replacement, rightclick, copy Replacement file,  select Target location, paste file, allow overwrite, select Replacement file, right click, delete, confirm  Total 16 actions

If there is already something out there...

Many thanks
