But I can't find any real info on CryptoPrevent to determine if it would be any better.

I also have a hard time understanding how the product works or exactly what it does from reading the website.

I was thinking if there exists or could be made a set that did not touch the ear at all.  But was positioned near the ear and had a wave guide to project the sound into the ear canal.  They are probably already out there somewhere.

You might want to check out "bone conduction" earphones on Amazon.  I have no idea how well they work, but they sound like they'd be of interest to people who don't want something inside of or covering their ears.

I liked PS Tray Factory back in the day.  But I'm not sure I need it on Win7.

I do find it ... odd ... that they upload v3.3 to cnet.com but haven't updated their own website: http://www.pssoftlab.com/

Well, that's interesting.  If it's just a translation of syscalls handled by those two driver files, this should be *very* lightweight.  I currently use a Mint VM to do some Linux-based things (including Android builds - which are pretty resource intensive).  This might be a way to do those things with some better performance.

I've been avoiding upgrading to Win10 from Win7 because of a combination of not seeing much benefit and hearing too much about invasive behavior by the system.  This might be enough for me to reconsider the free Win10 upgrade.  I wonder if there's any hope of a hack that gets this support onto Win7?

I hope not to sidetrack the thread, but gesture-based passwords reminds me of baseball, and the 2016 MLB season is opening this weekend (official Opening Day is tomorrow, but several teams have already had their first games).

Yes!  Go M's!.

General Software Discussion / Re: Run Bash on Ubuntu on Windows
« Last post by mwb1100 on April 01, 2016, 08:12 PM »
Just keep in mind that this sounds like it's running a lightweight VM of some sort - the bash window cannot run or interact with Windows programs.  The programs you run in the bash window are actually linux binaries, not something that runs on an emulation layer like Cygwin or that run in the old Posix subsystem (I think MS has removed that from Windows some time back).

That's not to say that it won't be useful, just that it might not act the way some people might think it would.

And now they can fool the mouse dongle into thinking it's the keyboard?

I don't know the details, but USB keyboards and mice are devices that both fall under the USB HID (Human Interface Device) class: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_human_interface_device_classw

I wouldn't be surprised if there's a lot of common capability available across devices in the HID class.

And as far as this goes:

Since the displacements of a mouse would not give any useful information to a hacker, the mouse reports are not encrypted.

It wouldn't shock me too much if someone eventually finds that such mouse information can be used to figure out something they shouldn't be able to.   It seems unlikely, but people have been surprised before by leaks of information from unusual areas (like timing or power usage). One possible situation where capturing mouse information might be an attractive target that comes to mind is that some programs use a virtual on-screen keyboard specifically to foil keyloggers. Not a common scenario, but if you're one of those people, don't use a wireless mouse...

Does any of this apply to wireless keyboards?

Given the state of the industry, I'd guess that there's a decent chance that many (non-bluetooth) wireless keyboards have similar design to these mice and are also unencrypted.  If that's the case then your passwords are probably readily readable if you use one of them.

*That* would be cause for some alarm.

General Software Discussion / Re: Raymond.cc roundup of ad blocking extensions
« Last post by mwb1100 on March 23, 2016, 10:33 PM »
why use a product like Adguard?

I use it because:

  - AdMuncher stopped being effective for some things
  - I got a decent deal on AdGuard
  - at the time I found the situation between uBlock and  uBlock Origin confusing
  - I can't remember why I decided against Adblock Plus
  - AdGuard seemed to have active, decent support on their forums

AdGuard is working well enough for me. Someday I might reexamine that decision.  Some of my browsing is slower than I'd like, and I get the feeling that AdGuard might be factor with that.

General Software Discussion / Slysoft shutdown (by government action?)
« Last post by mwb1100 on March 06, 2016, 02:47 PM »
Slysoft, makers of CD, DVD & Bluray copy-protection circumvention software, has had their operation (or at least their website) shutdown in February.  They were incorporated in Antigua in order to try to prevent this kind of thing, but I guess after a few years their opponents were able to work around that.  It looks like Slysoft (or some group of employees) are trying to resume operation from some other country (Belize?) and maybe under a new name - RedFox.

If you are a customer and want to grab their latest software, the downloads are now hosted here: https://forum.redfox.bz/download/  Who knows how long that'll last, but there seems to be quite a bit of optimism that the operation will resume.

They have moved the forum to another server, https://forum.redfox.bz. Most of the discussion and news about the shutdown and the efforts to resume are in the "General Chat" area of the forum:

I found out about this when I went to download a copy of the free Virtual CloneDrive software to mount an ISO file.  Note that this particular software is also available at Elaborate Bytes, which is the original author of that particular utility (I think):

PC Magazine has recently posted a comparative review of online backup services:

I haven't read it, but I did look at it enough to know that iDrive, Crashplan, and SpiderOak are all included.

General Software Discussion / Re: Comparative review of password managers
« Last post by mwb1100 on February 25, 2016, 02:25 AM »
Putting in my 2 cents:

I use a Password Manager called SafeInCloud.

I don't use its browser integration features, so I don't know how well those work.  I chose it mainly because:

  - the UI hits pretty close to having enough features for me to not feel hampered by it, but is simple enough to be easy to use
  - there are versions for Windows (free) and the mobile devices I use, Android and iOS, (not free, but cheap).  And they all sync without troubles.
  - the synchronization uses generally available cloud services - it's not tied to a single vendor

Unfortunately, the synchronization configuration doesn't let me choose something under my own control (I've request support for SFTP, but there's no indication whether that ever got onto his radar).  So for cloud and sync support, you need to choose between Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or Yandex Disk.

While not precisely what I want, in my opinion this is far better than being dependent on a service that's run only by the software vendor.  If nothing else, it gives an opportunity to migrate to another cloud service if the one you originally choose turns out to unacceptable or stops working for some reason beyond your control.  Also, if the developer abandons the product, you still have some hope of it continuing to work.

If the problem is only the touchpad and the suggestions for cleaning and drying it don't succeed, it's probably not too difficult to replace the touchpad.  Your device might be similar to this one:

A simple set of searches can almost surely find instructions for your exact model and a replacement part. eBay is jammed with parts for computers - just be careful that you're getting the part for the exact model of laptop.  And only go this route if the clean/dry method doesn't succeed.

I'm thinking this might explain what you're experiencing: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1654402

Very good catch!

The only Adobe entry I could find in winpatrol's Start list was AdobeARM...

"Adobe Speed Launcher" shows as the 3rd item in your "winpatrol 7.jpg" screen capture. Maybe it doesn't last long in the list due to whatever bug it has.  The directions in Dirhael's link should fix your problem.

I wish the WinPatrol would give some information on exactly how it was being set as a "Startup Program" in that dialog.  There are several methods such as using various registry keys or being placed in the 'startup folder'.

Clicking on the "Open Folder" or "Properties" link in the warning dialog might give some clue about what the program is.  If nothing else it should give you enough information to copy the file somewhere and do further analysis. Maybe run a "strings" program against the copy to see what text is in the file or submit the file to virustotal, metascan and/or jotti.

You might also want to enable WinPatrol's "Notify me if a Startup Auto Setting is Removed" check-box - it looks like whatever this is that's being registered is also being unregistered (perhaps in an effort to make detection/removal more difficult).

In the Options tab there are some buttons to create a WinPatrol log or Hijack This! log which might be handy, but they don't seem to work for me.

Fortunately, he's since open sourced his code for LuaMacros on github so at least it's available for inspection if somebody wants to do a GUI for it.

HidMacros is also open source, but it seems that the tools used to build it may be difficult to wrangle:

HidMacros was written in TurboDelphi which was free variant of Borland Delphi. This free version is not available any more so once I reinstall my computer, there's no way how I can continue with HidMacros. I won't spend any money to buy IDE to develop open source free product

I don't know anything about the Delphi world, so I have no idea how difficult it might be to port to something else (Lazarus, perhaps?).

I am beginning to suspect these are just arbitrary code numbers assigned by winpatrol to make me buy the pro version.

I'd think that it's more likely some crapware that randomizes something (filename, registry key, ???) to avoid being easy to detect/remove.  Can you post a screencap of the dialog box that WinPatrol displays (not the "PLUS Info" webpage)?

Very nice!

doing some fundamentally boring development (cleanup, documentation, ...) in my spare time didn't seem like a lot of fun.

I can only imagine how big of a hurdle that step is to doing something like this.
174
It's a compass of sorts, floating object placed in the middle when the tool is sitting/dipped in water. There are youtube videos under 'survival kits' or similar queries showing it in use.

I'm not exactly sure why you'd need the marked hole to get use out of a compass you made with a magnetized wire/needle - just float the needle in any small container of water.  However, looking this up did net me a couple of neat bits of trivia:

1) apparently you can magnetize the appropriate kind of wire or needle using the static electricity generated by rubbing it with hair or fur.  I can't imagine that it's easy, but apparently it'll work.  I might have to try it one day just to see if I can get it to be a compass.

2) one guy who posted a video about one of these tools found that the tool itself was already magnetized and that by hanging it on a thread (using the provided lanyard hole) it would align itself to magnetic north.  That seems like a more useful makeshift compass than the "direction auxiliary indicator".
175
I still don't know what #9 is, even when given the name "auxiliary direction indicator".

Does anyone know what you would actually use it for?
