General Software Discussion / Re: "File Size" Not Increasing As It Should Be
« Last post by Target on December 02, 2018, 11:21 PM »
There are a few out there that do this.  A lot depends on the methodology even with these, as I've noticed that even doing it programmatically using the Windows API, it stops working after a while.  I've narrowed down this particular issue in several cases to be that the file isn't flushed, but kept locked, so that the operation isn't evident on the drive.  Is it possible that the data hasn't been flushed to the file?

yep, more than a few tools around to do stuff like this.

Lots of gaps in the OP so the nirsoft stuff is probably a good starting point

so are you refreshing that explorer window while your watching it?  Those windows are static and won't show any changes until refreshed (F5)

what happens if there are multiple matches, ie where there are multiple records that fit within that tolerance?

and just how large are these 'numbers', <10 or <100 or >1,000,000

and how are you 'viewing' these lists?

FWIW when I googled TeamViewer there seemed to be a few question marks around it, hence my query

If both ends have Microsoft accounts there's Quick Assist (Windows 10) or Remote Assistance (pre-10 which didn't require a Microsoft account IIRC).

https://www.howtogee...eshoot-a-friends-pc/

Haven't tried Quick Assist but have previously used Remote Assistance and it worked fine for what I was doing.

hadn't heard of that one before, but that sounds just the ticket

I've just been using Skype as of late.  It works well enough for my purposes.

yeah, but that opens up other possibilities that I don't want to have to manage (and once the cats out of the bag there's no getting it back in)

General Software Discussion / desktop sharing tool
« Last post by Target on May 13, 2018, 08:35 PM »
anyone got any current recommendations for a desktop sharing tool?

looking for something simple - pretty limited use, ie desktop support for my inlaws (so potentially lots of calls, but only 1 or 2 users)

A search on DC throws a number of suggestions but most posts are quite old or have since disappeared

its certainly possible - I had (have) an old iriver DAC that used the audio jack for charging, data transfer, and playback

Living Room / Re: Why doesn't DC make its own browser?
« Last post by Target on February 20, 2018, 02:13 AM »
I am of the feeling that there is some "harm" done every time we make a new section, in terms of fractionating the community.   So my preference is always to avoid creating new forum sections.

perfectly understandable.

Is there a compromise whereby all that info could be stored in a central place rather than scattered across multiple random threads?

been following this thread and it sort of dovetails into something I've been thinking about for some time

Given the rather appalling offerings in the browser market I'm wondering if there is some value in creating a new(?) board, similar to the mini-review board but specifically for browsers (Browser Wars)?

I envisage that it would borrow a lot from the mini-review board in that posters would need to provide detailed info/feedback (ie no 'chrome is great' posts).

The idea is to provide a centralised area where users can find info on various browsers, their hereditary, feature sets, strengths, weaknesses, use cases etc.

And most of the info should stay relevant (unlike the mini-reviews which can date quickly)

is this worth pursuing or investigating?

Living Room / Re: How to check xlsx files for malicious macros or virus
« Last post by Target on February 18, 2018, 01:02 AM »
as long as it is actually an xlsx you wont have a problem - XLSX files can't hold macro's (they need to be in XLSM format)

as to how you confirm that I couldn't say, though excel is pretty good about highlighting files it thinks aren't in the expected format

Living Room / Re: Laptop monitor screen to box pc via cables?
« Last post by Target on January 11, 2018, 04:48 PM »
actually its not that hard as driver boards are readily available for most displays

You'll need to crack the screen open (ie remove the shell around the display) so you can identify the display type/model, eg I have a display from an old Acer travelmate 3100 - the display is an LG.Phillips LP154W01.  A quick google turns up the relevant hardware (about $40 aust for the driver board, plus an appropriate power supply)
