Some AV programs insert their own certificate in your browser and man-in-the-middle your HTTPS connections in order to be able to scan/filter them.

The ones I've seen are usually not using the best encryption, probably because they only serve to re-encrypt the traffic locally for your browser.

I find it fascinating how many 'programming' fonts there are, and how everyone has their favorite even more so.

I think there is a tendency that "craftsmen" feel strongly about their tools. Programmers spend a lot of their time looking at code, so seemingly small differences in editors, fonts, and coding style, appear important to them. Perhaps these details don't really make a big difference in productivity, but I think many have a slight case of CMOD (compulsive-micro-optimization-disorder).

i think i removed these in my effort to streamline and reduce noise..  any thoughts on a good way to bring them back -- assuming folks find them important (i didn't).

I used them when viewing the list of unread posts since my last visit, it highlights the threads I want to make sure I check.

Perhaps a little icon overlay on the thread icon on the left, like a little "reply arrow". If there is only one icon with no indicators for anything, what is the point of the icon anyway?

If they had discounted the lifetime to the price of normal, I would have been all over that one, but $130 is still way too much for me.

Their lifetime premium of almost 4 times the normal price is a little steep imho (and since the discount is fixed and not a percentage, it's even more here).

Edit: Even a flat 50% discount on both would have been nice.

I haven't tried it (was a bit surprised by having to enter an email and a captcha for a free download), but a quick google suggests it is a password database that does not offer auto-fill like LastPass and others, is this still the case?

I've been using the MSE + MBAM + EMET combo on all computers for the past couple of years without any issues, but the past couple of days I've had problems on this one machine.

MSE kept hanging, and I cannot figure out what is causing a conflict. So I am trying out alternatives at the moment. This is reminding me how much I hate most AV software, because they all seem to be huge suites that do all kinds of things I would rather have a dedicated separate program do if I need it.

I stopped having icons on the desktop a couple of years ago as well, and started using FARR for launching programs.

So, I was looking to update WinPatrol on an old machine, and went to the website, but got blocked by safe browsing filter in Firefox. I skipped past it, assuming it was some kind of error, and noticed MBAM blocking access to some site while it was loading. I switched to Chrome, and the site was blocked there too .

All the downloads appeared to be from c-net now, so I figured I could wait with updating till I figured out what was going on.

I've seen some people suggest disabling automatic download of mms messages (an option in Hangouts and other sms apps). The idea is that if no mms is downloaded, the decoder will not run.

The worst part about these kind of errors in the underlying system, is that with the way each manufacturer is running his own version of android, it will take a while for fixes to roll out even though Google fixes it. Some older phones will probably never get an update. Glad I have a Nexus .

I was looking for an "OR"-operator in my copy of Archivarius 3k, but couldn't find one that works. Is "OR" search not supported in A3k?

I think if you press the dropdown on the Find button, and select boolean search, you can use OR:



You can also press the Enter query link on the left to get a dialog where you can seach for any of a list of words.

Much like you, Deozaan, I looked at Git and Mercurial back when they were fairly new to Windows, and concluded that Git was a mess of *nix specific stuff, and Mercurial was much easier to grasp and get to work on Windows.

A year or two ago, I got sufficiently annoyed by not being able to use GitHub, that I tried Git. At first it was a pain, but after reading some articles on the background and inner workings of Git I kind of liked the simplicity underneath (for instance chapter 2 of Git Internals). And the staging area and selective commits were just great. I also liked the feature-branch idea -- branches are cheap, so you can use them to try something out, and if it doesn't work, just remove the branch and everything is gone again.

Btw, in SourceTree, you can both add individual "hunks" (which are the blocks the diff algorithm produces) to the staging area, or you can click a line and use shift+drag/cursor to select individual lines within a hunk to add:



I use this a lot, since I have a tendency to do drive-by-edits .

2FA is the only way to make access to a cloud based password solution reasonably safe. You still have to trust them to store your data safely on their side.

The other option is to use a local solution. Some of those (1password, StickyPassword) can even sync over Wi-Fi only.

Can someone help me figure out what kind of users prefer softmaker office?  I've always wondered...those who use MS office are not really going to use it.  And those who don't want to pay seem content with using the free stuff or google docs.  So which users like softmaker?  thanks

I started using it because I had an old computer at the time, and the difference in install size and speed between SoftMaker and MS Office was huge. The difference in price was a nice bonus.

I don't know how much MS Office takes up today, but I can see the system requirements page lists 3 GB of HDD space. My SoftMaker install is 79 MB.

My experiences with the OpenOffice (and derived) suites were also from that machine, and back when they used more Java internally. They were so slow they were almost unusable.

It's no secret that since version 5.7 Adguard is able to filter secured connections (https).

For proper filtering of secured connections, a mechanism called Man-In-Middle is used. By the way, filtering of secured connections in the popular antiviruses works the same way. E.g: Eset Nod32 and Bitdefender.

For this method to work correctly, Adguard imports its own root certificate in certificate store that your browser uses. If https-connection filtering is enabled, Adguard automatically detects browsers installed on your computer and installs the root certificate in their stores.
