General Software Discussion / Re: U3 Portable Smart Drives pros and cons
« Last post by Tekzel on April 30, 2007, 01:30 PM »
Tekzel, I'm with you there, non-U3 PortableApps is the way I want to go too. I wasn't too impressed with the PA Launcher, but PStart is exactly what I need from a portable launcher, and with the little tool PathSync, I can synchronize important files!

Well I use PStart too.  I have 3 2.5" external hard drives in external enclosures that do not require external power loaded down with 4gb of tools, drivers, etc.  I have Autopatcher for 2k, xp, 2003 and Vista (beta version) on there too.  On these I use PStart, and I use Microsoft Synctoy to keep them updated from a location on my hard drive (left to right copy only).  For my usb stick, I prefer the PA launcher, a much smaller collection of apps is loaded on there and the PA launcher just looks better haha.

Well since my post above I decided to go ahead and copy the data off my 2gb stick and uninstall the U3 system from it then switch to the PortableApps launcher.  I am 100% glad I did it, the PA launcher is better in my opinion and it looks like some neat new features will be coming up soon.  I like the integrated backup utility and not having to do some kind of arcane magic to add something to the launcher.  Very happy with the change.  Thought I would pop in here and let anyone that is interested know.

General Software Discussion / Re: Do you use 7-Zip files?
« Last post by Tekzel on April 27, 2007, 08:32 AM »
Tekzel: when compressing files of roughly 4.7GB of size (*cough*), speed is certainly an issue. Also, WinRAR can practically be used as a backup tool because of all it's commandline options, as well as unicode filename support, NTFS security & alternate streams support, etc...

Now, if 7zip was actually cleanly written and was extended to have the same support as winrar...

F0dder, I *cough* don't sit there and stare at my screen when compressing a large amount of data.  I let it go and do something else!  Either way I don't believe the difference is enough to make it worth worrying about, and I KNOW it isn't enough for ME to worry about. :)

I pretty much exclusively use 7-zip.  The only time I don't is when I am sending it to someone that isn't a computer geek.  Then I use zip.  All of my file based backups use 7-zip.  Why?  I dunno.  Its open source for one.  As for speed, yadda, who cares?  On a relatively modern PC the speed difference between any of them is probably small enough to be academic unless you just sit there all day compressing and decompressing files.  IF that is the case, you have bigger issues than finding the fastest compressor! haha.  Oh, also, it has a  7 in the name.  That is waaaaay cool.   RAR never did anything for me, in fact if I come across a RAR archive I want to keep I always recompress it to 7-zip.

Down with the (RAR) man.

This software scares me.  If I actually got something done, I would probably die outright.

U3 is neat and all, and I still have mine set up with it, but I am considering removing it.  Portableapps.com has a launcher much like it that is less wierd. As for the auto run thing?  Eh.  With XP you can basically autorun it anyway with the autorun.inf with one click on the little window that comes up on removable device insertion.  I have it password protected and that is the only reason I haven't removed U3 from it.

Tekzel, according to this thread, there is no userenv.dll in Win 98SE but try googling for Microsoft-specific queries..

I have already done google search after search and I had already started suspecting that that file does not exist for Win9x, but the weird thing is why is this Win98 system asking for it multiple times?!?! haha

That looks like fun, might throw an entry together myself over the weekend if I get the time.

Holy cow, a coding contest I could WIN.  Since... this is how I naturally write code :/

Already tried that one Wordzilla, it is the WinXP version and is incompatible with Win9x.  Thanks for the help though!

Thanks Wordzilla.  This is probably going to need to come from a system that is actively used with various software installed.  Wild thing is, I need this file to be able to properly uninstall the HP printer drivers on this system but the file does not exist in any form on the installation CD, nor is it in the Win98 cabs.  It was installed by something else entirely.  I have NO idea why the HP uninstaller requires this file if it didn't install it.  The only thing I can figure is that at some point something changed a component that the uninstaller uses and that changed component requires the file.  Sort of a middle man problem.  Weird stuff.

Ok guys and gals, I have a strange request.  I am working on a system for a lady and without getting into a looong description of the problem it is missing a file called "userenv.dll".  This system is running Win98 SE and I desperately need that file.  I have searched the web and found versions but every one I have found are for NT based OSes, none for Win9x.  So, if you are running Win9x of any flavor and feel like it could you see if you have this file?  Would be MUCH appreciated.  My catch-all email address is: [email protected].  I post this in public to foil scrapers and such.  Thanks for any help!

Freezes on my Vista machine - I wrote a litte Bug report to the Devs, but got no feedback....

Does it actually freeze?  It works fine on my Vista workstation and my home XP machine.  My boss tried it and initially it would crash with an error but he found that if he just did save to disk and saved it to his desktop instead of using "download them all" (we use Firefox) it worked.

Neat program!  Normally I am a little queasy about this sort of application (its a trust issue!) but I decided to chance it anyway.  Worked well.  Just have to wait and see if malware starts popping up on my machine.

We need to get Mousers software on there now! haha

Tried it, hated it, deleted content and uninstalled it.   Downloaded a show, was forced to watch an ad at the beginning, ok its free I can deal. 10 mins in while it was switching it forced me to watch another ad.  I just can't deal with the ads and if watching an ad every 10 mins is the price, I just am not willing to pay it.  Plus, got some kind of usage rights error after the ad so I couldn't finish the show anyway.  Also, could not fast forward through the darn show so I had watched almost 10 mins on the low res web version before deciding to try the HI-Q one so had to sit through that same bit yet again on the HI-Q one.  I guess i would have to do it AGAIN if i wanted to try to watch it and see if I got the same usage rights thing.

DRM is the devil, I have no idea why I thought it would be worth wasting 20 mins of my life messing with this.  Oh well.  Im soooo over it now. haha.

General Software Discussion / Re: Stickies 6.0a released
« Last post by Tekzel on January 23, 2007, 04:25 PM »
I just had to chime in here, I fricking love this program.  I have been using it for a while now and loved it, there were a couple of small issues but this program solved all my issues with every other sticky program I have ever tried, and that was a lot.  Every one had, what was for me, a big issue.  Something I just couldn't stand.  This one though everything I wanted minus a couple of small ones, this thing had.  Then with this version it answered my other small issues.  I can say that stickies v6 is everything I had wanted in a sticky program and more.  Loved it so much I donated once to the guy and am going to again for v6.

You know, that article where they commented on the name brought back my own issues with the name of FARR.  Perhaps it is time to take it to the next level and give it a nice catchy name for version 2.0?

ps.
farr has options to show the edit box a the bottom of the window, instead of top by default, and to hide the statusbar completely.  does anyone use either of these options?

I tried them but didn't care for them personally, I like my statusbar on and the edit at the top.  By the way, if you see a post somewhere about me not seeing the option to change the skin, ignore it.  I found it.

PopUp Wisdom / Couple of fairly minor issues
« Last post by Tekzel on December 20, 2006, 08:43 AM »
Hey Mouser, I just got around to checking this program out and was surprised to find that I like it!

I did find two issues quickly though.  One, the program does not support multiple monitors.  I set the position to custom and moved it to my second screen, when it came up it came up on the other one (the primary).  The other issue is on long quotes, especially from the bash.org one, when the window scrolls due to the length, the text is drawn under the buttons making the bottom line hard to read.  I usually have to adjust the length of the window.  Perhaps a fix would be to calculate the height of the button image and add it to what it thinks the height of the window should be?  Also, the buttons draw at the VERY bottom of the window with no space between the bottom edge and the bottom of the button and it just looks odd.

Cool program, I like it.

Uh huh.  Uh huh.  I wanna test these pimp new features out for you.  Hook a brotha up.

Both of the apps I was going to suggest have already been suggested, so I will just give my support of those suggestions.

If you need encryption: Waste.  It has been a loooong time since it has been updated and can be a bit of a pain in the rump, but it works good.

If you just need password protection and you want it to be simple to set up and even more simple to use:  HFS.  This program is VERY easy to use.  I mean, brain dead simple.  Like it a lot.

I am a wierdo, I don't like simple software.  A simple program is just too limiting.  I like features.  I like options. Gimme!

Mouser, a thought.  How about 2 modes in ScreenShot Captor, "Simple" and "Advanced".  In simple mode it would have only a few of the most common options and be as wizardy as reasonable.  You switch it into advanced mode and you have the ScreenShot Captor we know and love now.  This way, the program can appeal to both camps.  Oh, and remember the discussion about emailing images easily?  Any thoughts on that lately? :)

Doh!  How did I get ProcessExplorer and ProcessMonitor mixed up?!?  Not like the names are similar or anything. Damn Microsoft, I blame them.

General Software Discussion / Re: My favorite software! What's yours?
« Last post by Tekzel on November 11, 2006, 10:46 AM »
At the risk of sounding like a boot lick, I only have 1 indispensable program:

Find and Run Robot

Others I love:

Gyula's Navigator : I use this file manager at work and I have never found one that has a great combination of features that I need:  It is freeware, is completely portable so I can run it off a USB stick, and (this is the biggie) uses its own built in copy/move code and not explorers.  I use it to transfer data from failing drives and such so when explorer encounters an error copying, for whatever reason (in use, etc) it just STOPS.  This is infuriating.  This program gives an error then moves on to the next file.  I use the next program to answer that dialog.

RTVReco : Used to automate dialog clicks, works really well.

OpenOffice.org 2.0 :  I actually prefer this to MS Office.

PStart : I use this program for autorun menus on my CDs, USB drives and my 2 external tech drives that have about 2 gigs of tools, programs, etc loaded on it.  LOVE this program.

BartPE with Reatogo : This combination allows you to make a boot CD that is just amazingly powerful for working on broken XP systems.

Notepad++ : This is my text editor of choice, I use it for everything including my ASP scripting.  Fast and furious, great great program.

MP3Tag : My favorite MP3 tag manager.  Works really well.

Doppler : My favorite, and in my opinion, THE best Podcast client out there.  It has a few minor bugs, but it more than makes up for it in functionality.

There are more, oh yes there are more.  I just don't have the time! I may make a list and make another response.

Process Monitor has been there since long before Microsoft bought Sysinternals.  One thing I wish they would do is combine those monitor tools into one, FileMon, RegMon, ProcMon and DiskMon (raw disk access monitor, not file based like FileMon).  That would be cool.
