not sure if this falls under docklets.... but maybe the ability to toggle visibility of individual rings through icons in the dock?
...or the ability to rearrange the dock items through drag and drop?

Circle Dock / Re: Version 1.5 stops my keyboard from working
« Last post by Markham on February 11, 2010, 01:43 AM »
Please answer the following questions:

Exactly which version are you using - 1.50, 1.51 or 1.52?

What key combination do you use to toggle the dock's visibility?

What mouse button/key modifier combination do you use to toggle the dock's visibility?

Which keys aren't working - all of them or which specific keys?

Speaking from experience, distributing a Zip version may actually cause more problems than it fixes:

  • Instructions would need to be provided in 54 different languages as to how to unzip the contents correctly.
  • Users can not be relied upon to read documentation! At all. And especially "read-me"s.
  • There are many unzippers out there that don't understand relative paths
  • Inexperienced users won't understand what to do and will be confused. Telling such users to download and deploy using the installer version ain't going to fly!

Taken all of the above into account, I truly believe two things: (1) We will have more disgruntled (newbie) users and they will tell their friends = bad publicity; and (2) this board will be full of complaints and you'll be spending much of your time diagnosing installations.

When designing backgrounds and centre buttons, you really want to ensure that any internal transparent areas do have some opacity to prevent undesired visual effects :)

Hi,
now the arg "-show" shows all the instances of CD. It is possible to restrict this option only on CircleDock.exe where -show is used?
Thanks

Yup, next update (v1.53). There's also a "-showall" parameter available too.

Maybe the ability to make the center button open an application or folder of the user's choice?  :tellme:
-Archon of Fate (February 10, 2010, 04:42 PM)
Unlikely I'm afraid. The Centre Button is a member of a completely different set of classes to those which Dock Items belong. For reasons which will become apparent later, the Centre Button's use and functionality will remain pretty much as it is.

It would be quicker if I simply tell you to copy the following files:

The advantage of a single portable zip file being available for download is that the 'Make Portable' function only needs to be done once (admittedly by you) and everyone who only wants to use CD as a portable app can simply download and use that and have as many instances as they want. As it is, there are going to be lots of people out there going through the process; probably quite huge numbers given the number of downloads. People who have difficulty with it could simply use the install version.

Why - when they can already do that using the full installation program?! You can choose where you want to install Circle Dock and, provided your chosen location is not system-protected, that installation will be "portable" (except that the 'work as Portable App' setting may need to be enabled).

Or am I missing something?

Circle Dock / Re: Many background and and CircleDock Clone
« Last post by Markham on February 10, 2010, 10:27 PM »
Thanks to some Internet wizards of my acquaintance, we've discovered no fewer than four versions of Circle Dock that are being charged for. As they all appear to have been made from the same set of source code (Eric Wong's last release), the site owners will be contacted and asked to remove those programs and, if necessary, DMCA "Take Down" notices will be issued.

Unfortunately such action may be fruitless for two reasons. Firstly, the cloned programs are hosted in countries where "Copyright" is just a word in the dictionary and, secondly, since neither I nor the Sarge is named "Eric Wong" they could question our authority.

We have also discovered sites where downloaders are charged to obtain the product. Unfortunately there is little we can do about that as it is permitted under the terms of the current License. The problem is, though, that people who have paid-for a program have greater expectations with regard to support. I have news for them: if you have paid to download Circle Dock then, sorry, but you have no greater rights to support than anyone else.

Circle Dock / Re: Minor Glitches

Hope it works!  I figured out that my problem with the CTRL key was due to the fact that I had the CTRL key setup as a trigger for showing CD.  I tookthat off and my CTRL key is working again...

Next step...  multiple instances....

Good catch! I've just checked the code and just realised that, if any of Shift, Ctrl, Alt and Win are used as Mouse Modifiers, I'm suppressing the KeyUp and KeyDown triggers - ie not passing them down the chain. Oh dear! That's bad! I've corrected the code and now I will only suppress the Win key's KeyUp and KeyDown if that key is used as a modifier. The reason for suppressing the Win(dows) key is that if you want to use that key as a Mouse Modifier then it's highly likely you don't want the Start Menu displayed upon pressing it.

Looks like there'll be another update today, folks...

Thank you, Ltan, for your submissions. I'll ask the Sarge to open a new page on the web site for user contributions :)

However, I have a suggestion to make: Set the Opacity of the cental "hole" (where the Centre Button will go) to 1% or 2%. This will make life much easier for people who want a Centre Button smaller than the hole ;)

First of all, if you and Rigel wish to converse in Italian, could you please do it off the Forum, by means of PMs or email. Thanks!

ma dice che è un'idea originale"
"but it says it is an original idea"

When Circle Dock was first released, some 3 years ago, taken as a whole it was a unique idea and the program remains the original Circular Dock for Windows. It is true that Orbit Dock pre-dates Circle Dock but it was severely lacking in features, buggy and abandoned.

"C'è solo un vero Circle Dock e l'hai trovato".
"There is only one true Circle Dock and you found it."

Yes and we stand by that statement for reasons given above.

You go on to say that you've tried and don't like the manner in which the program operates. That's fair enough and I commend you for writing a program that works the way you want it. However, in defence of Circle Dock, I'm bound to say that with one download every second, "our" way must have some popular appeal

Hai scritto che man mano consigliavi delle idee su come migliorare la dock, sarei felice se potessi farlo anche per la mia!
You wrote that you have suggested ideas on how to improve the dock, I would be happy if I could do it for mine!

Yes, well he might - but not on this Forum please!

I will open CD at startup. Use it start say: MS Word....I will write a document and then save....Approximately an hour and a half. Close all related programs...go to center click, and CD will not appear.
Attempts to un-click and re click the option in settings is to no effect.
If I switch functions (Hotkey the appearance), re-open settings and set Middle Click as an option, it will work again.

It is like CD is is in slow degradation in its line of communication to the OS, eventually I am left with hiding via the CD Context Menu and showing via the systray icon, after about 5 hours
I've put in a couple of experimental fixes for this issue:

1. When Circle Dock is hidden, it will re-establish the linkages for the mouse visibility toggle every 5 minutes. As this addresses the global handler DLL directly, Windows shouldn't try to unload or swap the DLL out of memory.

2. I've added a new context menu item to the System Tray Icon ("Reconnect Mouse and Keystroke handlers") which does pretty much the same except that it will also show the dock.

Both methods will also ensure that Circle Dock's handlers are in the "chain" - as I mentioned in my earlier reply, some programs hook these triggers for their own purposes but forget there may be other "listeners" and therefore don't pass messages down the line. Or worse, they cause the unhooking of Circle Dock's listeners.

Please try the first method first. The second method is a "Plan B" scenario and will be removed if "Plan A" works consistently.

The update with this new code (v1.52) will be released later today.

Ah okay, I see what's happening. You have labels set to show on mouse-over only. When a Dock Item's properties are edited, it's label is shown but the label doesn't become hidden when you dismiss the dialog.

I've fixed that issue and will be releasing a minor update (1.52) later today.

Circle Dock / Re: v 1.5 problems - freezes and crashes
« Last post by Markham on February 09, 2010, 09:38 PM »
Let me get this clear. Are you saying that version 1.51 doesn't work, but v1.50 does? Or are you saying that neither v1.51 nor v1.50 work but v1.0 does?

Either way, that is somewhat curious because exactly the same code is being executed in exactly the same order in all three cases, so I really need to know why you're getting failures on one or more versions. Please attach the following files to your reply:

  • Config.xml
  • DockItemData.xml

If you installed Circle Dock into "C:\Program Files\" or "C:\Program Files (x86)\", then both those files will be found in "C:\Users\{YourUserName}\AppData\Local\CircleDock\".

That's a completely different issue, Sarge, and your issue is probably due to the way Windows Vista and 7 work. It seems that these two operating systems will unload unused DLLs after a while. There is a (Registry) fix for that, I believe. Since I'm developing the product, I don't have the luxury of having it loaded for more than a couple of minutes at a time!

It is also possible you ran a program that hooks keyboard and mouse for its own use and doesn't respect the fact that there may be other programs also hooking those events and therefore cuts the chains.

Maybe I'll include a "repair" function into the Tray Icon context menu which will re-invoke the keyboard and mouse event handlers.

I am curious to know why you clicked on the "Refresh" button on the Dock Items tab of the Inspector. For you to be able to do that, the Settings dialog loaded correctly so the problem lies elsewhere.

Please use the Problem Report tab of the Inspector to file an incident report: I need further information about you current configuration and that will give it to me.

Circle Dock / Re: V 1.5.1.1 Problems with Dock Settings and Item settings screen
« Last post by Markham on February 09, 2010, 10:51 AM »
Win 7 64 bit OS Circle Dock V 1.5.1.1 This is an install over V1 that was an install over an older version etc.

I can open the Dock Settings and Item settings screens just fine. They appear to function correctly as well. However after I close them I can no longer use my middle mouse button to toggle CD. If I restart Circle Dock the middle button toggles CD again. Any changed settings are retained. Going to the Item settings screen does not always produce this effect, the Dock settings screen always does. In the failed state I used the taskbar icon to open CD up and went into the Dock Settings screen and it did show the middle mouse button set as the toggle. I tried closing the Settings screen and using the middle button to no avail. I also tried changing the toggle to a new function and back to middle button and it did not help.

I did notice that in the failed state if I change the toggle to something else like Right mouse + shift, and exit the settings screen the new hot-key does work without a restart. It does however ignore the need for the additional key. No matter what Keys I choose in addition to right click, a simple right click with no buttons pressed toggles the dock. Going back into the settings screen and choosing middle button does not restore functionality. Only restarting circle dock restores the middle button toggle.
Coincidentally the guy who's re-designing the Circle Dock website phoned me earlier with the same problem but he did not describe it quite as succinctly or accurately as you! I have fixed it for the next update.

But I'm having problems with this:
Also when I use the Icon settings screen to change the label of an icon it truncates the first few letters off of several other Icon labels. There does not appear to be a hard limit like 8 chars. Some examples Downloads : loads
Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 : soft Visual Studio 2008
Oblivion : livion
That is real annoying because if I go in to fix one, it truncates 3-4 more labels.

I can not reproduce this at all - and I've tried three PCs with 3 different operating systems. It doesn't make sense either because when you edit a Dock Item's settings, Circle Dock has to retrieve that item's data record and the values are loaded into the dialog. Editing a Dock Item's name (the Label) is done in real time - as you key characters into the text box, the item's label changes. Each label is a separate window and the only linkage is between the Dock Item and its Label -- Labels aren't in linked-lists or anything like that.

Hi, I just thought I'd post some minor problems that I encountered while messing around with circle dock  :-[
1. when moving the rotation bar and changing values I got an error message...
 (see attachment in previous post)
-Archon of Fate (February 09, 2010, 12:49 AM)
I am unable to reproduce this problem but suspect it may be due to the way in which you have multiple instances running.

I am seriously considering removing this "feature" as it causes too many problems all round.

2. I like having my docks always visible, but every time I open a program in my dock it hides my dock - and I have hide when opening files and folders off. It only happens with programs though not folders :o
Check your dock items, the settings dialog value for that flag is just a default: each Dock Item has a similar setting which has greater precedence.
