Living Room / Digg Revolt
« Last post by Cpilot on May 02, 2007, 04:47 PM »
Instead of repeating the whole thing again here, here's a quote and a link.

It seems that Digg, the user powered community, has found themselves on the back end of a user revolt.
A user submitted the HD-DVD AACS Processing Key number, which can be used to unlock the copy protection for Hi-Def movies, to the site.
Apparently Digg decided that it exposed them to some liability and then deleted the post.
Well the original poster then reposted it and then reportedly went to bed only to find his post deleted and his account at Digg suspended.
Well throughout the night and the next morning it created quite a fuss, and as the article relates it became the top Digg, and then suddenly it all disappeared.
Most blogs and articles, when writing about what happened next, label the reaction a "user revolt" with other users by the thousands posting the same encryption code over and over.
So many in fact that it became apparent that Diggs editors couldn't possibly keep up with or remove all the posts and posters.

What has Digg dug for themselves?

Only problem I see with this kind of service, is that it keeps those inexperienced people inexperienced.

Yeah,
The web is a changin' though. It's no longer the domain of geeks and techies only.
There's an explosion of various products out there to get the average Joe up and running online.
For good or ill it looks like a trend that's here to stay.

Nice service.
Good way for people without a lot of experience to get themselves up and running.

Developer's Corner / Re: source editor that prints indentation guides
« Last post by Cpilot on April 25, 2007, 11:42 PM »
SC1 or Scite editor does it.
You can even customize the indentation guide.

For windows
SciTE

A full download (780K) includes the SciTE executable, any required DLLs, configuration files and documentation. After downloading the file, unzip it, and run SciTE.EXE. The files required to run SciTE are SciTE.EXE, SciLexer.DLL, and SciTEGlobal.properties and these are best located in one directory on the path.

single file executable called Sc1
A single file executable called Sc1 (480K) does not need any DLL or properties files as these are linked into the executable. You may still create properties files if you wish. Sc1.exe has been compressed with the UPX compressor so that it is a fast download. It does not need to be decompressed to be used.

Pedantic or not in the long run I doubt it'll make a difference.
Common terminology is arrived at by consensus.

Case in point, in the 80's Xerox made some noise about using it's name as a verb.
As in xeroxing to mean making a copy. It never got anywhere because it became a common term for using a copy machine.

For one thing the windows API changes, I know for a fact that there are API functions that will not work on anything less than Windows 2000.
Right off the top of my head SetLayeredWindowAttributes is one.

And transparent windows are required for the proper functioning of a program how?

As far as the support for WinXP, when it's time to upgrade then that's what I'll do.
But if I were still using it a decade from now I'll hardly expect anyone to continue to support it.

New versions of Windows are driven by;

5% Desire to make a better OS

95% Desire to get people to buy a new OS

It used to be that the OS existed to be able to run software. When did the OS itself become the star of the show with everything else taking a backseat?

Oh good your taking one example and think it vindicates your point.  ::)
If I want to create an app that uses transparency then it will function only on the OS's that support it.
It's that simple, no use in whining about it.

Personally I don't care one whit what OS you have, but I do know I won't bend over backwards to make anything I write compatable with Win98. It either works or it don't.
If someone feels they don't want to upgrade that's fine, but they shouldn't feel entitled to drag everyone else down with them.

Version 2.18.01 still doesn't work under Windows 98SE

why are you still using 98 and expecting to use new software???    I don't suggest tormenting yourself with Vista, but XP or 2000 are still fantastically better choices.

Gotta agree here.
The time is coming very soon where people writing software will no longer care to be bothered with trying to support it.

Personally I never even really noticed them.
I don't think they even get noticed by most people, so having them or not IMO wouldn't even have an impact from what I can tell.

Living Room / Researchers: Scrap the Internet and Start Over
« Last post by Cpilot on April 14, 2007, 07:36 PM »
Little news for thought.
NEW YORK —  Although it has already taken nearly four decades to get this far in building the Internet, some university researchers with the federal government's blessing want to scrap all that and start over.

One challenge in any reconstruction, though, will be balancing the interests of various constituencies. The first time around, researchers were able to toil away in their labs quietly. Industry is playing a bigger role this time, and law enforcement is bound to make its needs for wiretapping known.

There's no evidence they are meddling yet, but once any research looks promising, "a number of people (will) want to be in the drawing room," said Jonathan Zittrain, a law professor affiliated with Oxford and Harvard universities. "They'll be wearing coats and ties and spilling out of the venue."

Consider the vested interests if this gets off the ground.  :tellme:

You might possibly consider using one of the registry repair programs out there.
I've used RegSupreme by Macecraft for a couple of years and have always been happy with the results.

Not bad, I got a couple of your examples to compile.
It is pretty low level stuff, I'll have to play with it some more.

Have you tried posting about it at the MASM forum?

It is well known that baby hamsters come from nuts that hang from the branches of great trees by a furry stalk, that becomes the tail.

I am sure that Wikipedia will confirm this.
Depending on what your looking for I'm sure Wikipedia could confirm about anything.

That may be our winner. Can you please tell me where you obtained that graphic? I cannot use anything without permission. I need permission of the creator.

thanx,

I've seen people use reason #4 way more than any other myself.
I also agree that if one has WinXP installed then there is really no reason to not be on SP2.
Eventually I'll upgrade to Vista, but not for a while.
173
Being a WinXP user I really have a problem understanding why some insist on hanging onto Win 98, 2000, ME.
It's a stable OS and has worked well for me since I got it.
But then again to each his own I suppose.
But nothing lasts forever.

Hello, sorry for jumping in but I have a related question...Does anyone know what's the maximum visible time for tooltips and how to modify it?

Thanks,

PhilB
Tooltips have a 5 second visibility.
Here's MSDN's all about Tooltips

Yeah well balloontips are easy to disable, there's tips and tweaks and scripts all over the web to do so.
Tooltips are another matter.
I haven't seen any negative effects from this program but like all other things out there use at your own risk.
Personally I've found and disabled way more annoying stuff than tooltips but...to each their own.
