Living Room / Re: Looking for smartphone

Granted I am not a heavy user by any stretch of the imagination, but I usually get 3-5 days out of a charge on the Pixel 3 I picked up back in December.

Okay, now ^that's^ funny!!
153
Now that has potential to come in quite handy!

Is your dollar bill worth thousands The bizarre trend for collecting cash with ‘interesting’ serial codes

I can't for the life of me figure out if that is the stupidest thing I've ever heard, or my new hobby … Or both. :-\

Either way, I am definitely going to be checking it out this weekend. :D

Don't know if they ship internationally, but ServerSupply.com has great prices on (new/used) drives of all kinds.

They currently have a 12TB SATA-6gbps 3.5" 7200rpm drive new for $395 (USD) - Sorry can't link to it the wat their site is designed, but it's really easy to find.

I'm not a fan of refurb drives either, but I have had occasion to use one or two from SS in a pinch because nobody else had any flavor of X in stock.

Non-Windows Software / Re: Android 6.0 tablet recent windows close all?
« Last post by Stoic Joker on January 16, 2019, 02:39 PM »
I had a similarly frustrating issue with the Moto phone I just got rid of. No matter how many Apps were listed the close all button didn't show up until I got down to the last one.

Christmas Chronicles was unexpected and a real treat!

I caught that one, and started watching with more than just a bit of trepidation. But Kurt Russel did a fantastic Santa Claus!

It's a new favorite for me.

Wow, this thing is cool … And very fast on the scan. Nicely done!

This is now replacing the Angry IP Scanner I've been using for years.

Last Friday I got to hear that the PY Traffic regulation body deemed her to be at fault and she is now personally responsible for all the costs made by me and herself.

I really am quite tired of hearing about fellow riders getting run over because - yet again - some idiot cager isn't paying attention. Scare up a good lawyer and burn her to the ground.

Advocate of the devil here:  Would it then not become just a numbers game?  This post is liked by x amount of people on this forum? What does that add exactly?

The point of it would be so that you could express thanks or approval or give some form of feedback without having to create a new reply which would therefore ping everyone who has signed up to be notified of new replies. It also helps keep threads on topic instead of having a bunch of superfluous "thanks" or "nice" replies.

This would be especially handy, IMO, in threads such as the latest Steam or GOG giveaways.

As things are now, I have to choose between no reply at all (which can give the OP the idea that nobody cared about what they had to say/share) or possibly bothering a bunch of people with notifications just to say something like "thanks" or "I enjoyed that" etc. Often times I choose the former.

^Like^  :D

If you're very concerned about security, I wouldn't trust WordPress, private or not.  Not that it's not capable, it's just that WordPress is a big target.  Keeping things that you'd rather not have anyone see but it's not disastrous if someone does?  It's probably fine for that.  But really secure things?  I'd suggest somewhere else, IMO.
I'll second that - There is no true 'privacy' on the internet.

On a side note: We really do need a like button system here, it's a great way to agree with something without making a low content clutter post.

I wonder if it's a new(ish) policy to just drop off the package and leave.

I get a disproportionate number of packages, and I can say that yes unless it is needed for a signature, in my area, everyone just drops and dashes.

Same here with various projects going ring and run is the norm.

Nicely done!

But then the Bitcoin Core team crippled Bitcoin, which slowed (and regressed) adoption, while driving transaction fees through the roof
Yes, multiple forks (what are they up to, like 4 now?) have been driven by the internal conflict about trans fees, security, and how to scale the network properly.

I'm chronically pressed for time these days, so can only make rushed quips … But thanks for translating for me. :)
167
But the intent was for the transaction payments to increase as the BTC production dropped off. However the transaction payments (e.g. cost...) part has turned into a rather total shit show that nobody is happy about.
I thought the promise was low-cost (and fast) transactions ... maybe that's why nobody's happy about it.

Yeah, it's pretty much a karma ran over dogma type of scenario. Trans fees sounded great until folks started noticing them … And then shit hit the fan.

I spent almost a month trying to get coin to move off an old wallet back last December.
168
A system that gives you a reasonable shot at gaining new BitCoin is going to cost you.
Bitcoin mining is SHA256/ASIC only. And the current 14.5TH ASIC miners are running $400-600US at Bitmain.com.

Now granted at the current difficulty/USD price they're only good enough for about $3 a day … But the intent was for the transaction payments to increase as the BTC production dropped off. However the transaction payments (e.g. cost...) part has turned into a rather total shit show that nobody is happy about.

Also, IIUC the BTC difficulty can be adjusted, if enough of the right people agree to it. BCH difficulty is dynamically adjustable based on hashing power available.
169
TBH I don't have time at the moment to even skim the articles, but just a first impression - knee jerk reaction - to the titles:

Cost to start a Bitcoin mining operations is about $500 for equipment, and ~$100 a month for electricity.
Time effort put into the mining process: Pick a pool and done, so none really.

Cost to start precious mining operation is well into the 6 figure mark just for the equipment.
Time and effort put into mining operation: All consuming + payroll for staff to run equipment.

And either way the chance of a big payoff is a total crap shoot.

Just because someone "works in IT", doesn't necessarily mean they're an IT Person. Everybody these day is in a rush to - offload responsibility - the cloud because it has been marketed - to death - as the be-all and end-all solution to keeping those damn expensive and cranky IT types on staff. So ultimately nobody is minding the store because everybody is told security is the other guy's job - the properly trained people have all been sent away - And it's all perfectly safe in the cloud... Right?

Yeah, or not..

The private forum has to be private, because it has a sign right there that says it is … And nobody is going to have the audacity to just walk (into Mordor...) past a sign...right?!?

I see it all too often, somebody in middle/upper management wants it to be so … So they mandate it as such, and if nobody is there to explain why it dangerous/stupid it gets pushed through.

*Sigh* Low hanging fruit by fiat.

SumatraPDF is great, and I use it for 99% of my PDF reading needs.

Damn, that thing is fast. I've been using PDF-Xchange … But I think I might of just switched!

This just in from the 'Nobody can really be that stupid' department:

I rebooted our Email server last night at 5:00pm for some Windows updates, and it didn't quite manage to make it back completely online. So this morning it was a scramble to get it running again. Once I got it back, I go to look at my own Email to see what else is going on and I find an Email from one of our less adept users that had been sent at a little after 1:00am this morning.

I'm don't have time to do screen shots and remove names etc.. So I'll just paste below the subject line from the Email.

"If you can see these emails, I cannot send myself or anyone else an email so I don't know where they are going?  I will call in the morning."

Yepper - She actually Emailed me, to report an Email outage - Wow!

...You just can't make shit like this up.

I can, SAMBA v1 has been disabled by default after Windows 10 updates.  Now I have to access my 4TB NAS, (no updates available), via FTP because re-enabling it didn't work on my computer.

You mean SMBv1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support? We've run into issues with that on a few network devices, but never had a problem with reenabling it on Win10. It is however in two pieces for Client and Server connections under Turn Windows Features On and Off.

IIRC a reboot is required.

Anybody else run into the after WU BSOD Stop Code: WDF Violation?

Apparently it's a - now known - issue with one of the drivers that come with the 10/18 cumulative update.

From command prompt rename [OS Drive Letter]:\Windows\System32\Drivers\HpqKbFiltr.sys to fix
