LibreOffice 3.4 - free.  Why pay?
152
An alternative would be to use TinyPic where an account isn't required.
153
Thanks for checking.  Unfortunately, ZUploader's permission needs are a fatal drawback.  Call me paranoid, but don't want to risk anybody messing with my files.
154
Yikes.  Attempted to configure ZUploader to use my Photobucket account but don't like that it'll be trusted enough to view, delete or modify album files.  Only want to allow uploads.

Great idea.  Never realized that many of the screenshots I take do end-up on photobucket.  Integration into SC saves a step.

Subject title aside, why choose NovaBACKUP Pro over Acronis?

This program is good stuff.  Now sorry I paid for it a while back but at least got a free upgrade.

Like most if not all software, Zentimo is still a work in process.

I had it installed on my Vista ThinkPad and it had problems figuring out an Aluratek AIRJ01F device attached to a USB port.  Kept getting a rotating hourglass on Zentimo's tray icon indicating a component error even though device worked okay.

Emailed Zentimo's author but they never solved the issue.  In fact, almost seems as if they gave up.

Can't complain, though.  Got Zentimo as a giveaway from another site.  Simply uninstalled it and reinstalled a copy of USB Safely Remove won on this site.  Still get error though.

Glad to read of the fundraiser results.  Honestly would miss this site.

Living Room / Re: A NAS server for my home

Just to give you some ideas, I network three boxes (Win98, WinXP and Vista) using the following components:  Linksys NSLU2, Linksys WRT54GL, Zoom 5651 DSL modem, Rosewill R2-JBOD,  WD Caviar Green 1TB, WD Caviar Black 1TB, and Brother HL-2070N.

All rather old stuff now but good when it was introduced and still good now.  Bought all piecemeal over time never at full retail so cost was also reasonable.

Linksys NSLU2 is an especially interesting network appliance that runs Linux.  It allowed WD HD's NTFS formatting.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: PowerDesk 8 FREE
« Last post by Midnight Rambler on December 11, 2010, 02:51 PM »
Thanks for the heads-up, Curt.  Have been using PowerDesk since v. 5.  Now regret having paid for versions up to 7.  Oh, well, daily use has justified cost.

And while at dottech.org, picked up jv16 PowerTools 2009 too.  As long as I can remember, this utility has been recommended by every top geek.  Will have to explore dottech.org more often.  Program installation instructions on site couldn't have been more clear.

Only downside of using these freebies is the chance of spam and incessant marketing offers.

162
I'd go for the lifetime upgrades.

Just what I did but still waiting for the serial number.
163
Ridiculous to complain about winning and usually choose mature app over first version final but the choice between Zentimo or USB Safely Remove is still a relatively tough one.

More functions with Zentimo is alluring but will all be used as compared with basic functions of Safely Remove?  Lifetime upgrades with Safely Remove especially valuable considering evolving OS's.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Process Lasso Pro at GAOTD (May 21, 2010)

One of the GOTD's better offerings and an update of previous give away (3.84.7 from 3.84.3).  Author also seems conscientious.

Installed on a couple of my machines (XP single core and Vista dual core) and appears to have increased performance although more so on XP box.  Had an issue with icon not appearing in XP box's system tray so only time will tell whether that's been resolved.
165
GOTD is one of the sites I visit daily.  Have installed and kept quite a few of the offerings.  Drawbacks are that some authors flood you with upgrade opportunities (as is the case with this software, apparently) and that you lose the programs if windows has to be reinstalled.  Ashampoo might be a keeper for those without burning studios.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Save cropped image only
« Last post by Midnight Rambler on August 25, 2010, 06:52 PM »
try this:
Crop, then hit save (Ctrl+S), then rename it by typing a new name in the bottom "Name:" field and hitting enter.
note that you do have to save the image after you crop in order for the new name to not create a new file.

This technique worked (thanks!) but is rather counter-intuitive in that I hit Save before renaming the file and then close the window.  Saving usually comes after file renaming.

Seems more logical to crop, rename, save and close window but this technique had the effect of Save As (with two images saved).

Screenshot Captor / Save cropped image only
« Last post by Midnight Rambler on August 25, 2010, 06:13 PM »
After hitting "PrtSc" and "Keep image and Show," I almost always crop the image of what I really wanted from the screen shot and save it with a more specific file name instead of just the default time and day.  Problem is, I always end up with two images: the stock and the cropped, and again almost always end up deleting the stock image with its default file name.

How do I save only the cropped portion of the image?  Thanks.

The feature I like most is the ability to permanently assign a drive letter to a USB device.

USBDLM V4.5.2 is another freeware alternative for drive letter assignment that's solved my XP machine's issue.  Runs as a service at start up.  Appears to be not compatible with Vista or Win7 but those OS's are supposed to not be afflicted anyway.

Seems like there's always a decent freeware alternative for non-crucial system issues.  For those more important - like backup and imaging, no shortcuts.

Have been using Targus Ergonomic X-Stand for Laptops AWE09US with good results.  It's sturdy, raises laptop enough for effective cooling, sets nice angle, and draws no power.  Look for under $20 shipped.

USB Disk Ejector works fine too and is freeware.  Have been using it on my XP and Vista boxes without a hitch.

Nice discount but it doesn't download Hulu videos.  Appears no program on this site offers that either.

General Software Discussion / Re: Recommend disk imaging software?

Seems to be a love/hate among users but Acronis TI imaging component has saved my butt more than once.  Can's speak for data backup function.  Tech support is spotty but the program's apparently written well so hopefully, you won't have to contact them much as I haven't.  Watch for it on sale, though; usual price is always too high.

ProcessTamer / Re: Process Tamer and Process Lasso
« Last post by Midnight Rambler on May 24, 2010, 01:42 PM »
Recently installed Process Lasso on XP SP3 and Vista SP1 boxes and it appears to work as advertised.  The speedup is more apparent on the XP box though probably because it is an older system and is single core.

Giveawayoftheday.com offered it so figured I had nothing to lose.  Lasso reviewer references were made to Tamer - even by the author of Lasso - as an alternative and was going to try it first as an addition to my donationcoder.com arsenal but as Mouser stated, Lasso's updates appear more frequent and users rated it highly overall.  Well written utilities that perform as promised that aren't resource hogs are keepers.

The need for speed is insatiable.

You're right.  "Receive our newsletter" was unchecked so re-checked.

Haven't gotten my newsletter for a while now and was wondering what happened.  Did you change domain names or something?  Even checked my ISP junk box to see if it was flagged.  Thanks.
