iResizer enables new smart ways of resizing images without deforming or cropping the content. It can scale an image without changing important visual content such as people, buildings, animals, etc. While normal resizing affects all pixels uniformly when scaling an image, iResizer resizing mostly affects pixels in areas that do not have important visual content.

It also can be used to remove portion of the image in a consistent way.

General Software Discussion / Re: software recommendations - photo/graphics editors
« Last post by Curt on December 10, 2013, 02:02 AM »
This is my wifes machine and she's a very light (basic!!) user, mostly minor retouching of photos or scans, ...

The two easiest to use of the able ones are PhotoScape and PhotoFiltre Studio X Pro. There is no marker / selection tool in PhotoScape => it will only alter the entire picture - which is why I also use PhotoFiltre, so I can edit the details. Except for "amplify colours" (which is amplifying too strongly), I am very satisfied with these two editors.

-------------
During installation of PhotoScape you should not click the first "I agree", but "Options", otherwise you will usually get some 3'rd party program.

PhotoScape is Korean, PhotoFiltre is French.

I haven't tried the newest version (3), since version 2.3 works well with Pale Moon

"Options" in version 3 is so odd I almost investigated what it is about - but only almost. I saw a "buy"-button, and went no further. Did you by chance keep a version of the 2.3 installer, cyberdiva?

Living Room / I have been pwned
« Last post by Curt on December 09, 2013, 07:55 AM »
I am one of the 153,962,421 people who has been "pwned" via Adobe by hackers.
It only takes a couple of seconds to check if you too have been "pwned":
Go to haveibeenpwned and type in your email address, and the answer is ready!

First go to gizmo at http://www.techsuppo...-check-instantly.htm to get the proper haveibeenpwned link, and instructions on what to do if you too have had your email address and log-in details stolen via Adobe :

This is the answer you don't want to get:

Are Your Details Among 154 Million Stolen Accounts? Check Instantly
Updated 8. December 2013 - 4:23 by rob.schifreen

There's been a number of high-profile system hacks over the past couple of years, against companies such as Yahoo, Adobe and Sony.  In hacker terminology, these accounts are now owned, or "pwned", by the attackers, which means that the usernames, passwords and email addresses behind them can be used for illicit purposes.

Hackers often like to publicise their discoveries, and the databases of hacked, stolen passwords were uploaded for all to see.  This allowed the people behind a rather useful website to create a searchable copy of the list, so that you can check whether your details appear on a list of some 154 million stolen online accounts and email addresses.

To find out whether your details do indeed appear on any of those stolen lists, just head to haveibeenpwned and type in your email address on the home page.  If that address is among any of the lists of stolen accounts, you'll be warned straight away.

If you do get informed that your details were among those stolen, your next course of action depends on whether the password you used on that system was unique.  If it was, log into that system and change the password as soon as you can.  Or delete the account entirely.  More importantly, if you used the same password on other sites, you need to change your password on all of those sites too.  Assuming it's not too late and a hacker hasn't already done it for you.

-wow, that was thorough answer! Thank you, 4wd!

As my above screenshot shows, my personnal setting was "NEVER search for updates", yet app.update.auto was "True", which can explain a lot. I have changed it to "False", now time will tell if that's all that's needed.

Thanks again, 4wd, your answer was way beyond what any one could ask for!

Thanks, IainB. But I don't have any "update".
Has it been replaced by app.update?

I had an idea and went to their homepage to find a portable version. Yes, they have such! I placed it in ProgramFiles X86 and gave it the same key that I gave to the installed version earlier on today - and it works!
 :)

----------------

Unfortunately it still doesn't read pdf files, "SVX1007 has stopped working", so I am removing it again; it only has interest to me if I can use it for previewing my eBooks. Further more, I really cannot have it being named Profession Edition - yes, I have quoted the spelling precisely!  :o

..., the navigation layout is outdated, ...

"outdated" was maybe not the right word, because Windows has always had a shortcut to "User" - and this one doesn't have such a shortcut anywhere (that I could find)! I cannot know if CWuestefeld was right about Vole Windows Ekspedition, ("But overall, it gave me the impression of being more an organizational tool than of a tool for ad hoc file management"), but I certainly found the program to be very slow navigating with.

It should however be noted that the program has lots of tutorials / user's manuals.

When launched first time, the program immediately found an update and offered to download & install it:

2013-11-27_192911.gif

------------

I was puzzled because GAOTD -programs normally comes without the right to update. Of course I clicked Yes.
The updating went fine and the program is now a "Professional" version (in opposition to a "Free" version) - but the necessary register procedure is weird, to say the least; you must click the blue I > Renew (yes, "renew"!).

When I tried to pre-view a pdf file, an error message said svx1007 had stopped working. The error was fatal, and I have removed the program. I didn't like it anyway, the navigation layout is outdated, and there were no "favourite-folders" that I could find.

General Software Discussion / Re: Smart Edit (for Novelists & Creative Writers)
« Last post by Curt on November 27, 2013, 06:36 AM »
I am very fond of the humble PageFour ("Software for Novelists and Creative Writers"). Now the same company, (Bad Wolf Software, Manchester, U.K.), has launched a stand-alone piece of accessory: Smart Edit ("Editing Software for Novelists & Creative Writers") - for any editor.

However, the price is $70, so I haven't yet tested it...

-but today only (Wednesday 27 November 2013) the price is a mere $19

http://www.bitsdujou...m/software/smartedit

We’ve improved SmartEdit a lot over the past 11 months, and now we want to spread the word as far and as wide as we can. With more and more writers deciding to self-publish, and many of those writers choosing to skimp and save when it comes to editing, software like SmartEdit is becoming more and more important.

But editing software might not be for you. Each writer writes in a different way, and what helps one may not help another. If you find SmartEdit useful, or if you think your fellow writers might find it useful, we’d love it if you would tell others about it.
-Bad Wolf

SmartEdit is a first-pass editing tool that helps you to edit your work by highlighting up to 20 areas that may need improvement. With SmartEdit, you’ll be able to detect whether you’ve overused a word or phrase, gone too far with adverbs, or mistakenly used a common misspelling. What’s more, SmartEdit is also smart enough to examine sentence structures for length, possibly incorrect punctuation, or inconsistent use of quotation marks.

Now mind you, SmartEdit is not going to make your work better from a content perspective. That’s entirely up to you! But what SmartEdit can do is to make you more critical of your work from a technical viewpoint, giving you the ability to make the entire document stronger, more professional, and ready for review by a real-world editor!

How to Report Malware or False Positives to Multiple Antivirus Vendors
Updated 24. November 2013 - 0:17 by Chiron

This article contains a list of every respectable Windows anti-malware vendor, with a signature based product, that I am aware of. Thus this list, in addition to showing you how to easily submit malware or false positives to all of them, also serves as a reference for anti-malware products which are confirmed to be legitimate. That said, I make no statement as to whether any particular anti-malware vendor is good at detecting malware. Some of the vendors in this list are very good and others are nearly worthless. This is not the place to discuss this. By submitting malware to all of them you can help protect nearly all internet users, regardless of which product they choose to use for protection.

Also, it would really help if you could rate this article. In addition, for those of you who are knowledgeable about anti-malware vendors, if you do find something wrong, whether it be a missing vendor, incorrect information, missing information, etc..., please read the section about How You Can Help. I really need everyone's help in order to improve and maintain this article.
