Non-Windows Software / Re: Idea for decluttered android twitter app
« Last post by 4wd on January 24, 2016, 05:50 PM »
The only (not really a) problem with Twidere I ran across was the limit on the number of reply Tweets it displayed but that was a function of Twitter's anally-restrictive API and it didn't impact me on the one feed I follow, (which is low traffic anyway).

There's also Carbon but I only had a small play with that as it wasn't really what I was after and I'm not sure if it's any better for what you want.

Another alternative is TweetDeck which runs in a browser, it's another interface to Twitter, (by Twitter), that allows for a bit more customising.

Can't get to link.  At least, not without disabling ad blockers.
I got through (w. uBlock origin) but it wants email address after looking at a couple of pages

Read it without a problem here, no request for email address.

Have you tried Twidere ?

It's also a lot less intrusive permission-wise.

Anyone have any suggestions regarding a replacement security suite that has a firewall component that's as leak-tight as Agnitum's was?

At the time I was running OSS the only other firewall with almost as fine grain control was Comodo Internet Security Suite - I have no idea if that is still the case though.

It's too bad that these Internet Security Suites don't allow you to uninstall parts you don't require or at least stop them from using resources, you could continue to use just the firewall component then.

What do you get transferring from PC to PC over wired LAN, (with Gb you should get around 50-80MB/s), through just a switch, no router involved ?

Trying to narrow it down by cutting out the unnecessary stuff first.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

On the flipside: Don't try to fix something so badly broken.

Since it's the age of consumerism: Throw it in the trash, go down to the local Galactic Walmart, buy something cheaper that has more features but shorter planned obsolescence.

Yesterday Windows f*****g 10 forcibly rebooted on me for an update.

Renegade missed my post about how to disable auto reboot too.. :D

Well, to be fair to Renegade, your post was after his  :P

EDIT:  Oops! My bad, he's referring to another one  :-[

... without incorporating any of the technology/code into new or existing products or retaining staff.

They are incorporating the technology and retaining staff ... just not for the good of the Outpost customer base.  It will be for the good of the Yandex Browser customer base.

In December 2015 Yandex acquired Agnitum software technology. Agnitum’s R&D has provided security software solutions for over 15 years. These technologies will now be used to protect users of Yandex Browser.

As agreed by both parties, Agnitum’s software developers, quality engineers and virus analysts were offered an opportunity to join Yandex team and continue their work in St Petersburg office of Yandex.

Agnitum experience will contribute greatly to the development of Protect active security technology that ensures online safety for Yandex Browser users. Protect encompasses several technologies: ID theft protection, Secure Wi-Fi feature, suspicious site blocking and virus scanner.

I've also got lifetime licenses for OSS but stopped using it a few years ago when the then current version was bogging down the system.

Also have no interest in Kaspersky but may as well take them up on the offer so I can have the benefit of yet another unused license  :P

It's not that I have a huge hand span or anything. I select the LeftShift+RightShift keys with the first two fingers of my left hand ...
Judging from the second sentence you may have a much more huge hand than you think you have. Or typo.  :D

He qualifies that sentence in the next paragraph, remapping Right-Shift to Capslock, thus the two keys are next to each other.

Wouldn't it be helpful to do the following?

Gpedit.msc:
Computer Configuration
. Windows Settings
... Security Settings
..... Software Restriction Policies
....... Additional Rules

Right-click in the blank area below the two entries to create a new hash and/or path rule that 'Disallow' the execution of the GWX and related files to be executed by Windows (or any other process).

In addition you could also do:
Gpedit.msc:
Computer Configuration
. Windows Settings
... Security Settings
..... Application Control Policies
....... Applocker
......... Executable Rules

Repeat the 'Dissallow' procedure for GWX and related files here too.

Aren't you talking about two different things here?

Renegade's problem appears to be Win10's Automatic Update mechanism in which you can defer restarts due to updates for only so long, whereas the GPEdit policies you've shown are for systems that haven't yet updated to Win10.  (Also, your method is a little hard to implement unless you're running Pro isn't it?)

Since changing the setting as stated by SJ and changing Configure Automatic Updates to Enabled (2 = Notify before downloading and installing any updates.), I now get this in the Notification Area:

2016-01-16 22_47_56.png

Instead of it downloading updates and then telling me it wants to restart.

Which is probably the closest I'll get to the "Notify on new updates but don't download" setting I had under Win8.1

On second thought, I think I needed to install some .NET updates from Windows update before the GWX updater would work for me without just closing immediately. But this was on a fresh Windows 7 install. I'd expect Windows 8.1 to have most of the more recent .NET packages/updates.

Does it for me on one of my Windows 8.1 Pro machines.  This machine I previously upgraded to 10 Pro but then found that a USB TV Tuner didn't work, so restored an image of the drive.

Now that I have a solution for the hardware I told it a few times to Start Download, Upgrade Later but all it ever does is go to Windows Update and grab the latest Defender definitions - no sign of it downloading the upgrade at all.

I'll probably have to upgrade it via ISO.

Chuwi tablets turn up on OzBargain (search link) fairly regularly, you can peruse the comments there.

Like wraith, the ExtremeTech site just shows a blank page, (and produces a bucket load more hits in uBlock than Forbes).

Running uBlock, RefControl, RequestPolicy, and hosts file blocking - not getting any ads nor am I getting prompts to disable an adblocker on Forbes.

Possibly geo specific?

I get this when going via a US VPN:

Doesn't happen if I go via normal IP, (Australia).

If it were me I'd just keep letting it crash until they get it through their skulls that they are the cause of the problem.

Fix the problem, (PEBKACw), not the symptom.

 ;)  :P

Or you could use Task Scheduler/Performance Monitor to run some command that opens a big window on the screen that displays a warning.

See steps 2-4 here.

And here's a simple VBScript that opens a warning window, (replacement for script in step 1 on that page):

Warning.vbs
Code: Visual Basic [Select]
  1. x=msgbox("WARNING: Your computer is low on resources.  Close some programs or risk losing your work." ,16 , "WARNING!")

Any tips for upgrading to Windows 10 now?
=> upgrading from 8.1, I'm going try keeping programmes unless advised otherwise.
Yes: Check with the manufacturer of the computer if an upgrade to Windows 10 is supported.
In hindsight I found out why my upgrade adventures failed for my Lenovo Y580 laptop: Lenovo states that it is not possible to upgrade that specific model (and a few others) to Windows 10.

thanks Ath,
that knocks the idea on the head -- it's a Lenovo (n581) that is included in that list as not recommended. It doesnt clearly state why (that I could see), so I probably wont bother following up on it.

I think I'd be tempted to go ahead anyway, just image the drive and let it update, then do an image after it has 10 on it.

If it doesn't work restore the image, you'll have lost a couple of hours but on the flip side the laptop is now registered with a Windows 10 license so that if relevant drivers ever do appear for esoteric hardware, you can upgrade for nothing.

Otherwise, you might find that you can live without whatever functions no longer work under 10.
