« Last post by Deozaan on March 17, 2018, 05:33 PM »
Tomos (et al.) have satisfactorily transcribed/translated the document. Thanks a bunch!

I'll have another one to post within a few days for anyone who wants to take a stab at it.

are these private letters with secret informations, or why haven't you uploaded a page, so we can have a go?
I read German, as all Danes of my generation do, but old scripts and spelling (etc) are not easy at all - weather German or Danish...

I was hesitant to post the image publicly because of the personal information contained within, but I've just asked and gotten permission. Please take a look.

I see above you say you cannot read the names or dates in the document -- have another look, if you still cant, I can manage that as well (as said per PM I do have problems with handwritten German, not used to it, but names and dates were readable for me).

I'll ask my friend to highlight any names/dates/locations that she can't read or doesn't already know, and I'll get back to you on that. Thanks again!

Are they written in a legible script/font -- I mean legible to you/me ?
If it's anything like thisw or if it's handwritten and difficult to read, I wouldnt even try.
If it is readable, I would be willing to have a look at them and see if I can give an idea of they're about. Due to time it would probably take, I wouldn't offer to do a full translation.

Disclaimer: I'm not the best candidate, German not being my native language. I am fluent in "everyday" German, but this sounds like a different kettle of fish. Note also that translating documents can be *very* time-consuming -- why I wouldnt offer to actually translate everything anyway. Let me know if you're interested on those terms.

I asked my friend for a sample of one of the documents. It looks like it's handwritten in cursive. I can read some of it ("Kinder: Johan Ludwig"), some of it I can't. But I can't tell if what I can't read is due to it being illegible or due to my unfamiliarity with the German language/alphabet/geography.

Looks like some kind of census record or family tree, with dates going back as far as 1759. But I noticed there's a date stamped in ink in the corner showing a date as recent as 1902. It appears to be mostly names, dates, and locations, but there are a couple of paragraphs of text and of course a title that probably further explain what the document is.

I'd appreciate some help knowing what the document is, and deciphering the names and dates as well. I'll send you a PM with an image and let you decide for yourself whether it's worth your time.

Hmm, actually, it seems that the act of just reading any thread takes you to the non-HTTPS site.

Updated the topic to be more accurate.

1. Be on the HTTPS site.
2. Navigate to forum and begin writing a new post/reply.
3. Click Post.
4. Observe that you are now on the non-HTTPS site.

Living Room / Need help translating old German documents

Update:

The documents have been translated. Thanks to all and especially to tomos who provided the most information.

Original message below:

Greetings to all, and especially to our German-speaking members!

I have a friend who has recently gotten copies of some genealogical documents that are written in German and since none of us know the German language, we have no idea what the documents are about or what they say. They're probably something rather mundane like birth/marriage/death certificates or something similar, but we can't know for sure until we've gotten them translated.

I'm not sure on all the details because I haven't gotten to look at the documents myself, but I think they may be from the late 1700s to the mid 1800s, so if German is anything like English, it (words, penmanship, spelling, etc.) may have changed a lot over the centuries, and may be hard to read/understand. So if anyone here feels like taking a stab at translating them for us so we can find out what kind of documents these are and what they say, please let me know and we can hash out the details via PM.

Thanks.

Necro-thread arise!

It's still taking longer, but they're better funded now from a crowd funded stock offering, so it looks even better.  They've stopped giving dates, and instead been giving more detailed updates into the process, to show movement towards the finish line.

They are planning to sell 100 preproduction units this year, to deliver next year.

Any update on the Elio? Their website makes it hard to find out how much progress has been made. It just seems to have a regular blog about the auto industry and how Elio hopes to shake it up, but with very little details about what's actually going on with the production of Elios.

If you'd like to test yourself, I'm using it on Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms on Windows 10 (1709 OS Build 16299.248). In the meantime, I have a couple feature requests:

  • Now that you can set up multiple click configurations, it would be nice if there was a quick way to enable/disable specific ones so they won't activate when Clicador is active, but you don't have to delete them. I'm trying to test out a bunch of different things and don't want to delete my configurations, but also don't want to have them running when I'm setting up/testing out new configurations. A quick toggle for each item in the list would be very nice.
  • Since some of the clicking options aren't working properly for me, I would like to request the return of the feature to "return the mouse to its previous position" after it moves and clicks at a certain position.

It's not working properly for me.

I set it up to click inside an application at a specific X,Y coordinate, but it only clicks when my mouse is hovering over the application, and only where my mouse is, and it prevents that application from being the active window even if I manually click on it.

Hmm... I was just closing a bunch of windows because I was entertaining the idea of recording some footage of what was happening, and I closed the Task Manager and now I can make the application the active window. So somehow Clicador was making Task Manager not allow me to select the window.

But anyway, there are still at least two problems with it:

  • It won't click in the application unless my mouse is hovering over the application window.
  • It only clicks where my mouse cursor is instead of at the X,Y coordinate I told it to click at.

I also tried "without moving mouse at screen coordinate" and it exhibits the same behavior. It doesn't click at all unless my mouse is over the application, and it only clicks where the mouse cursor is instead of at the configured location.

I think the solution for ransomware is to just make regular backups of everything that's important. If you get hit by some ransomeware, just format everything and restore from backup.

There are so many free (or inexpensive) cloud services available that the only real excuse (for the average person) for not having good backups is ignorance (e.g., not knowing how, or not understanding the risks) or apathy (e.g., laziness, understanding the risks but not caring or not thinking they're probable).

As for me, I fit in the laziness category. :D

Well, I didn't know if it was a scare tactic, a note that they couldn't regulate it, or a prelude to them trying to regulate it, based on "consumers losing money".

I dunno. I just think it's a common sense statement. There's not really anything else the SEC can do, due to the uncensorable nature of cryptocurrencies. Even if they try to regulate cryptocurrencies, it kind of can't be done. If someone is determined to buy or sell crypto, there's nothing a law or regulation can do to prevent that or even make it especially difficult for someone to do.

A lot of people are used to being able to appeal to their banks or governments to recover funds in case of fraud. So I suppose it makes sense for an organization whose purpose (or one of their purposes) is to protect people from being scammed financially to say "watch out about cryptocurrencies, because we can't do anything about them." That is, if you lose all your money in a cryptocurrency scam, there's no way for any government authority to seize the crypto and return it (if the scammer has properly safeguarded their private key(s) and refuses to cooperate). Having organizations who can help protect/prevent/recover funds and regulations over things like this is definitely a convenience, but it comes at the cost of not truly owning your money. That is, it requires you to give up some of your freedoms over your money. The same bank/government that can help you recover your defrauded funds can also freeze your account(s), seize all your money, refuse to allow you to send money to people they don't like, not allow you to send/receive money because it's 3 AM or a weekend/holiday, etc.

Crypto grants you a lot of freedom over your own money, but it also comes at a cost of much greater personal responsibility to safeguard it and not be so careless with it. But I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir here. :)

Interesting...

https://www.engadget...ocurrency-investors/

So... The government wants to "protect us" from the very thing that is supposed to protect us from the (fiat currency) government. o_O

Yeah, I don't get it. The SEC is saying "buyer beware," which is a basic tenet of cryptocurrency. Crypto puts the responsibility and ownership back in your own hands. But I guess this non-news is useful for people who have no idea what cryptocurrency is or how it works, and are just jumping on the bandwagon because they keep hearing about how much Bitcoin (and others) keeps going up.

Living Room / Re: US Internet providers - suggestions needed

I believe that ISPs in the US tend to have (essentially) local monopolies. There's very little competition, and out of what little competition exists, usually only the cable companies (of which there is only one in any given area) have the infrastructure to provide semi-reliable broadband speeds. The alternatives are often really crappy/slow/unreliable wireless/satellite companies. The only exception I'm aware of to this is in a few metropolitan areas or where Google Fiber is available.

It says the server is not found.  If it were being blocked by our firewall, there would be a firewall page.
Tried in two different browsers.
I can't ping it, either.

Could be my connection.  Or maybe something in between.  I'll try again tomorrow.

Here is a tool you can use to check if a site is up or if it's just your connection: https://isitup.org/chartlyrics.com

And here's a snapshot of the chartlyrics domain as of today, showing that it's up: http://archive.is/Smudz

It wasn't Coinbase's fault.

This is a great example of why it would be beneficial if cryptocurrency (as cash, for spending) were more widely adopted. This couldn't happen on the blockchain where you control your own keys and therefore control your own money.

Photogrammetry is also something that is becoming easier and easier to do with regular cameras/equipment and software. But methinks that Baby Cody isn't "seriously accurate" according to nudone's model sheet.
