Lanux I actually have flashfolders on my laptop. The problem is not the size of the dialog at all, all the free and non free apps can resize the open save dialog no problem. The problem is they cannot autosize the "name" column in details views. Some of them can autosize the name column based on the first folder but the second I click on another folder while the dialog open and if there are longer named files in the new folder they fail to resize the name column. And unfortunately I use long file names and this is a great hassle for me :(

Beside that particular problem FlashFolders is really nice.

Thanks for the colorpicker tip. That is exactly what I needed

Nudo
Nicely laid out. Here are a few programs that are far superior to those listed in the article (imo).

Examples:

Screen Ruler: PMeter
Font Viewer: Font Xplorer
Colour Picker: Color Cop
Screen Capture: Cropper or ScreenshotCaptor

One thing I do not know is that, is this an online or offline solution? There is no clear definition of the pipeline

I vote for true email and true contacts (thunderbird, outlooks express) search.

Darwin thanks for the heads up. I actually downloaded and used the trial version but I was not impressed with it, especially because trial version did not have any of the pro features really. And all the free explorer replacements have those feature sets in powerdesk pro`s. So I am little puzzled about it. I may give it another shot.

Yes FH will make backups, that is the idea. But you can limit number of backups.Since you will only download the file one time, it will only add to library, it wont make anybackup first time the file is added to library.

Input Director ROCKS. It is easier to use and has seamless integration. Crazy GOOD. I mean it is beyond best

I still haven't taken the plunge yet. I don't have the time to mess with all this right now. However, I did spot another application today that does the same thing. I don't know if it is any good or not.

This is weird but winsplit tried to connect to this ip adress 212.27.63.133, if you run as http://212.27.63.133/ , it gors to some french website. Is this a trojan do you think? Did anyone suspect this software? It could be just for checking for updates but I want to make sure that there is no fish business. Otherwise it is nice piece of program

I have not tried this software. But one of the obstacles of using everyother software`s contact manager is little troublesome because one may endup using multiple applications with contact managers and trying to import export contacts become a serious hasssle for me and I am sure it is hassle for everyone. And I am not a big fan of csv pipeline, things get lost, compability issues etc. Does your program can import outlook express or thunderbird contacts without going through loops?

try Todolist. It does not have a real calendar but very nice feature set.

I use Filehamster for my project asset management needs, but you can definetely use it for your downloads. It brings a pop up for entering text. It has a report plugin as well.

I actually used copernic, x1 and google desktop in the past longer than 3 weeks. I had  gigs(I think at some point I had 9 gb of copernic index) of indexings data which I hated. I have alot of reference images(over 100.000 I had collected over 10 years) , pdf files, gigs of project files(50 gb of binary and ascii), 13 years of emails, videos etc. Other problem is that to be able to find what you want, the file needs to be indexed first so search is not happening in real time, it depends on timing of the index. Even if you index every 15 mins (which is not realistic, because indexing generally takes longer than 15 mins, ).

I think that desktop search is good for emails and small mp3 collections. But for people like me who has a lot of data it is not a good idea. Also I do not want to use multiple search engines for different tasks.

I am maybe missing to understand the problem right. If all this is for 3 weeks only, why then are indexes so big a problem? Or did you mean "in 3 weeks (from now)"?
1495
Curt, I read most of that thread. But the thing is is that almost most of the desktop search apps indexes your files. Indexing is a huge resource hog, and creates alot of data.

My favorites are freecommander and ultracommander. I tried all those paid softwares and to be honest none of them are offering more than these 2 as far as usability it and general feature set.
