Can I put in a request to be a fly on the wall for the first time the switchboard explodes with the first wave of undoubtedly extremely hostile customers? Especially in the SMB space where you're likely to run into 500 users behind one IP that just got "quarantined" because one dipstick in accounting opened an attachment.

If our ISP at the office thinks I was unpleasant about being handed an entire block of blacklisted IP addressed for our mail server back when we first switched to them. I'm sure they'll be quite astonished at how much worse I can actually get if this bit of nonsense hit the fan. Especially if it got triggered by a customers machine that had been brought in for decontamination.

Yeah, I'm with Edward...this is an incredibly stupid idea. Even if it would be fun to watch them get lynched by their own support staff for putting them directly in the line of fire.


Here's a thought, how about they use all those snazzy resources to screen out the hosting server source of the hostile code? ...Oh wait, OpenDNS already does that. And they crowd source much of the blocked hostile content from the same people that this asshat thinks don't care.

Okay, so I have LL2.0 x86 running in a Hyper-V VM on Windows 8.1, and have installed all the updates. So Far, so good ... But two things are bugging me:
  1. How do I get rid of the Floppy Disk icon on the desktop.
  2. What are my chances of getting the sound working? The system seems to think it is playing sounds. Youtube video made virtual audio level meter bounce ... But no (noise comes out) sound can be heard.

Had to check with the wife on that one. She shops at Publix all the time, because the food is better there than Winn Dixie. There is no noticeable price creep (she watches), and they will allow you to split a BOGO for half price.

But we're in central Florida, so perhaps it's a region/store level policy decision. She did mention that they will pester you about doing it...but they will let it happen here. *Shrug*

1.56 euros a litre ('Super' 95) = 8 dollars a gallon at today's exchange rates.

In the last while it's usually over 1.60 a litre, got it today cause it was 'cheap'.

IIRC you guys have a slightly different tax structure that takes some of the sting out of it (but not much). But yes it's 'tough all over' as the saying goes. And it's the finger pointing game that drives me batshit the most. Every time you turn on the news there is some other poorly concocted excuse for bumping the price up another "little" bit. They never seem to get around to just being honest and flat out say because fuck you that's why ... I could actually almost respect that. Sad to say.

These must be the same people drifting through malls looking side to side, walking abreast so I can't get around them.  Meanwhile I know the store, shelf, item, price and have exact change for what I want to purchase ready.  I'm 2.5 minutes in the store, bit 15 minutes getting around the obstructionists.  I've dubbed these types Meanderthals.  Someone should screen them when it comes to issuing driver's licenses and mall pedestrian permits.

Oh that's an easy one (even leaving out the EPA's having the market cornered*), just Google Hypermiling. Seems there is a whole horde of idiots that just love to preen about how they're getting 90+MPG out of their castrationmobile Prius or other highway clogging road-slug hybrid. Apparently in their world impeding the flow of traffic is considered a "Driving Skill".

The thing I find is most hysterical is how many of their driving/tech tips are - in reality - suicidally stupid. Overinflate your already bicycle width tires to reduce rolling friction ... Yeah, right, and good luck with your first panic stop - Hope the insurance company has a sense of humor. My wife had an "economical car" - great on gas, but couldn't get out of its own way - that we finally managed to get her out of before she was killed. Anything that can't make it from 0 to 60mph in under 10 seconds (unless it's a Semi Truck) shouldn't be allowed on the highway.

See same clown sailing down other side of same hill at close to twice the speed limit (in neutral...)? Yepper, them again. And good freaking luck trying to set your cruise control behind one of these clowns!

Think running red lights is an "Aggressive Driver" issue (hehe) Nope! It's ^them^ again trying to avoid having to accelerate. Gas petal bad ... Butterflies good .

Make a list of the things that people do in traffic that really piss you off, and then with that in mind go browse a few hypermiling websites. It's them.

Like the yahoos that start coasting at 5mph up to red-light from a block away. For a Semi Truck that doesn't want to have to gear down and back up 12 more time it is reasonable behavior. For some idiot in a hybrid with an automatic transmission ... Not so much. Ya know what I mean?

Unfortunately I don't know what the latest build is these days. I stepped away from the project and released the source code about a year or so ago. There are several other people are working on it now (I think), but I don't know who is where on what. I just forget sometimes and comment here out of reflex.

If someone knows what the most current build is, I'll add it to the first post here, and also make a note of it on my website ... My inbox is still getting hammered about that week number bit.

After dealing with the rust-N-dust and ichor of most blown wheel cylinders the master cylinder rebuild must have been a welcomed change. I did a ton of that stuff on motorcycles that people had left sitting for too long. Only thing I go to a shop for is an automotive automatic transmission. I never have figured them damn things. Sure I know how they work...but put it back together and have it work ...(for me)... Not likely.

Realistic Expectations issue perhaps? Since everything else (network, sound, mouse, and keyboard) worked fine in the virtual environment - smooth guest/host transitions with no captured mouse issues - the OS's desire for hardware acceleration is fairly reasonable in this day and age. I'm assuming there is a setting somewhere that will quiet the video grumbling ... I just wanted to chime in on Deo's shutdown issue incase they were somehow related. I'm wondering when during the shutdown is the VM crashing. Is it during the graphical, transitional, or textual phase of the shutdown?

I installed it on a VM and it crashes VirtualBox every time it tries to shutdown. I'm not sure what went wrong. VirtualBox is working just fine with my other VMs.

At least it turns off when you tell it to. I just spent 10 minutes at a command prompt trying to kick mine to sleep in Hyper-V.

Apparently it doesn't much like the video driver, as it complained every step of the way that it couldn't access hardware acceleration. On boot it gave me a CLI login and refused to go graphical until I ran StartX. Then it loaded the desktop and promptly told me it really wanted hardware acceleration (GUI), and that the X server had crashed (CLI style error)...but then went right back to the desktop. O_o

Then I polked around for a bit and all seemed fine, but I had a rather narrow window of time to play with this thing ... So, time to shutdown and go back to work. Ha!

Apparently after hitting shutdown on the desktop it just starts a 60 second timer (WTF..?) that then closes the desktop...only. Shutdown had actually just dropped me back to a command prompt and then syntactically teased my until I stumbled the correct command to get the thing to exit ... Which it finally did do smoothly.

Booting from the "CD" (.iso actually) did not however exhibit any of these ill natured shenanigans.

Oh yeah, I've been having big fun with that crap on my 2010 Harley FLTRX. The starter clutch is a bit edgy because the last owner would just let it grind until it fired (like an idiot). I dropped $500 on a vehicle interface kit so I can connect a laptop to it and club some sense into the damn thing.

It's EFI FFS, I shouldn't need to do any more than touch the starter and have it pop off instantly...regardless of what the temperature is (just like my carborated 1987 did..). But oh hell no...the startup enrichment is trying to light the 10's engine with a friggin butterfly fart.

...Damn'ed-est think though ... After I +++ed the startup mixture. All-of-a-suddenly - as if by magic - the engine began starting much easier. Kinda just like it was supposed to in the $%&#^@#^%$ first place. I've even add about 3mph to the top speed by adding a bit more fuel to the upper RPM range ... Seems they had made it a bit lean up there for safety...or some other idiotic notion.

Christ on a stick, if I wanted to play it that safe I'd be wearing a helmet and kneepads while hiding in a Volvo...(or get one of those lame-assed battery powered Prius' that don't even go fast enough to kill an insect that hits the windshield at "full" throttle)...not riding a freaking motorcycle -- God damn cretins piss me off.

My 2002 Dodge Dakota with all the EFI crap, close to the same size engine (5.9L), and a probably half the weight only gets 12 MPG. Last time it had an issue I had to go and get the error codes read to find out what was up its ass. And that diagnosis was clear as mud...It appears it could be 1 of 4 different $80 parts.

Here's the thing. Have you ever seen the sometimes very intricate tutorial instructions for using Server X as a workstation? That's the kind of deeply buried problems that are going to be had from this hack.

POS systems are like servers, with less options. So the thing(s) that these updates will break are going to be very subtle, and buried very deeply in the system's code.

So... Be very sure to make backups before using any of these updates, and plan on saving them for a fairly long time.

The problem isn't that the default passwords are simple, because most if not all of them are well documented and therefore readily available. The problem is that so many people keep using them in production environments.

The number of time I go onsite and find that the client is completely unaware of their router's (or other equipment's') password is horrifyingly close to 90%. And the number of those cases where I get into it anyway using the manufacturer's default credentials is an almost perfect score of ~98%.

It's like leaving the keys to your car sitting on the seat - so you "don't lose them" - and then setting the alarm.
