Living Room / Re: amount of RAM in a netbook
« Last post by f0dder on May 03, 2011, 07:07 AM »
i was looking at netbooks recently and one reason that windows 7 starter seems very appealing for a netbook is that one of the things it does not have is the aero glass effects, which is good because for a netbook it's not worth taking the speed hit that comes with that.  so i think windows 7 starter is a good match for a netbook for a novice.
Aero could very well be a performance benefit - but it does require the GPU to not suck majorly, and have discrete video memory. Dunno if you can find a netbook that fulfills those requirements, but if you do Aero should run faster and result in less system memory being gobbled up.

However, this episode confirms my decision to take some time off and cool my head.
Taking a breather can be a fine thing to do - but please do come back

Easy now, housey.

People are different - some are cheering, some aren't. This forum is pretty diverse, just as real life is. And, agree with their emotions or not, do keep in mind the scar 9/11 has carved in many Amerikans; while I don't necessarily feel the same way as they do, I understand their emotions.

Might've been smart having the body buried on Muslim ground - just saying.
I am sure that the burial at sea was to prevent his final resting place becoming a holy pilgrimage site. We don't want to help him become more of a martyr.
Good point - but perhaps letting them have his corpse could help put a dampener on the supporting Muslims? Oh well, they're probably going to be royally pissed anyway.

I, for one, do not think that killing people is a good thing.
-housetier
I hope you are kidding, right? This guy is responsible for the deaths of thousands and thousands. We kill one to prevent thousands more being killed. I'm confident that if we could have simply captured him and brought him back then we would have. The reports I read is that he went down "resisting".
They started!"

...besides, bin Laden isn't exactly the only casualty on their side - wonder who has lost most civilians? :-\
(there is IMHO a big difference between collateral damage and deliberately targeting civilians, though)

It's one thing to use a crack for software that you have already licensed, but...
And another to use wholly pirated software, which isn't necessarily the end of the world...

but asking a programmer for help with pirated software? priceless :)

US president Barack Obama said bin Laden, the most-wanted fugitive on the US list, has been killed on Sunday in a US operation in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad, about 150km north of Islamabad.
Geez, haven't had enough coffee today - read that as "US president Barack Osama bin Laden" >_<

Abbottabad - "abort a bad [guy]", anyone?

Will be interesting to see what happens now. I have no illusions that Al Qaeda will fall to pieces because guy is gone, I'm thinking more in the lines of which terrorist actions we'll see and where.

Ugh - not really a fan of those über-custom GUIs, it just seems so pointless except for a few very specialized applications.

That said, it's not the worst I've seen. The progress bar stands out like a pedobear in a kindergarten, though, something heavily needs to be done about it... ASAP!

Over.

I get annoyed if it's facing the wrong way, and I definitely correct the error - also if I'm visiting other people :)

AHK for script kiddies while AI3 good and powerful? Aren't those languages pretty much the same? O_o

I don't see a point in paying for something like MiniBasic. There's simply too many excellent and free (gratis and libre) programming tools out there, so a paid product would have to offer something really extraordinary... and that just doesn't seem to be the case with MB.

Why are you sending SIGKILL to the server anyway?
Might be related to linux OOMw handling?

A new favourite of mine: MClickFocusTab. No more "right-click > Open in background tab", just middle-click the link, and it will open in background tab/window.
Isn't that default behavior? Or at least behavior that can be set with standard settings? At least middle-click opens new tab in background here, and I don't have any tab-related addons afaik :)

Zowie, what a thread title!

So, I've set up a private minecraft server on my linux box, serving a handful of friends. Currently, it's running under my 'f0dder' user account... it works, but probably isn't the most secure and smart way to do things.

I've finally found a decent mapper that doesn't have craploads of dependencies... it's still somewhat slow, probably because of the ancient singlecore CPU in the server, but it works. And I'd like to automate the map generation to run overnight. Cronjob, eh? I could just do that from root's crontab, but that also feels wrong.

So, what's a decent setup for all this? I assume the first thing would be setting up a dedicated "minecraft" user that doesn't allow remote logins, and is as restricted as possible. Next up, what to do about file permissions? The generated map data should be available through http, and the http daemon uses the www-data user+group for that...

NTFS ACL permissions are so simple and flexible to work with, but this is linux :)

It's not a buzzword... CRCw it's technology, radical maaaan!

Basically it's a checksum that's designed to be fast & efficient to implement, while still being fairly good at detecting bit errors. It's not nearly as good at that as modern cryptographic hashes, but it was designed ages ago, and has been used for all sorts of communication stuff where a cryptographic hash would have required too much processing power back then... not to mention the algorithms hadn't been designed yet :)

The Charity is going to contact VWNames and hopefully talk to someone who will be compassionate!
Domain squatter, compassionate? >_<

The "www" part of domain names refers to what the internet is - the Wild, Wild West. People suck.

@Renegade:
Well, I'm not bowing down to or worshiping anything called "boson".
But do you bow down to anything else - Mammon, perhaps?           ;)
God money, I'll do anything for you - God money, just tell me what you want me to.

In case anyone was wondering, it would take well in excess of a week to sort a 33GB dictionary. I started sorting my 33GB file on April 15th and finally cancelled it today (after 9 days) not even half done.
There must be some more efficient software out there.

Curt, W_T_F? That addon should be blacklisted from the Mozilla download page!

Curt: there's something about FireShot that makes the hair on my back rise - not sure exactly what it is, but it just doesn't feel right. Definitely test Screengrab :)

I use Screengrab - does what it says, and doesn't try to do a whole lot more.
1475
On a side note, you know you have good software when someone actually does the effort of creating a crack for it, right? :P
Not necessarily - 0day crackers have ratios to fulfill :)
