Activation/License/Language Help / Re: Screenshot Captor registrieren
« Last post by brotherS on January 11, 2006, 04:25 PM »

@mouser: he's not sure what to do about that popup. Didn't you create a video tutorial for that? Could you post the link to it?

Maybe a dry joint on the sound card - they can be a devil to track down.

I changed my old sound card not so long ago as I started to get intermittent stuff like this, and then it suddenly became consistent on one channel. Drivers/new installs etc. solved nothing. Plugged in a new card and all was fine.

If it is working now then wait and see but if it becomes less intermittent it may be a developing hardware fault.

[...] Physically earthing both jointly but touching the earth connectors with my fingers cures this problem until the next system reboot. Strange but these things happen!
Interesting... I'll see what happens here. If I only get this rarely it surely still is annoying, but I can live with it.

Mini-Reviews by Members / FeedBlitz - THE new way to track and read blogs?
« Last post by brotherS on January 10, 2006, 04:43 AM »

http://www.feedblitz.com/

RSS, Blogs, XML, readers and aggregators can be confusing. Adding email services to your blog isn't.
[...]
It's easy too! No gurus required. The basic service is free to all - no restrictions, no ads. Plus, you can subscribe to any blog or RSS feed by email with FeedBlitz, even if that blog does not use FeedBlitz itself.

http://www.feedblitz.com/features.htm

http://www.feedblitz.com/bloglet.htm

I've been using FeedBlitz for a few days only, I like it a lot already. Until now, I prefer this way over using one of the RSS readers I tried. I bet FeedBlitz will become quite popular! It's not for you if you have to track news feeds that are updated every few minutes, but since most of the blogs I read are only updated once a day (or less) I don't mind.

FeedBlitz benefits:
  • You don't have to use another program to track
  • You can archive the emails you get from FeedBlitz - and search them later! (For example with Google Desktop Search)
  • It's free

Living Room / Re: submerge your pc in veggie oil - cool and quiet
« Last post by brotherS on January 10, 2006, 04:06 AM »
It's a funny idea, but that's it - since you can't submerge ALL parts in oil I still think a bolstered metal case with a bit of silent tuning is the best way to do it.

I don't even want to think about what happens if you aren't around when that plastic case starts to leak 30 litres of veggie oil... talk about a slick idea!

General Software Discussion / Kodak Photo Voice - free add-on for Skype
« Last post by brotherS on January 10, 2006, 04:00 AM »

http://www.kodakgallery.com/photovoice

I like the introduction movie there ;D

"Today's families and social networks are scattered around the globe. Staying connected through photo sharing remains an important element in maintaining closer personal relationships," said Sandra Morris, general manager of Consumer Imaging Services at Kodak. "Traditional social gatherings that once took place around the radio, television or telephone are now happening around the computer, mobile phone or camera. KODAK Photo Voice marks the next step in this evolution."

What exactly is KODAK Photo Voice? It lets two people connected via Skype to simultaneously view a customized photo slideshow as they "reminisce and react" to each picture.

[...]

How do you use it? After downloading KODAK Photo Voice and Skype, the host selects pictures from their computer, quickly and easily compiles them into a KODAK Photo Voice presentation and calls a friend via Skype to watch the slideshow live. Hosts can submit orders for prints and other merchandise that guests select and have them mailed directly to the guest’s home.

No idea about your question, but you should just subscribe to the thread to let the forum send you an email when someone posts a reply. Do not post email addresses in forum posts, that's easy prey for spam bots.

General Software Discussion / Re: CrashIt!

why you need this program

You all know the situation...
you've been working on this really important document the whole day.
You don't believe in saving too often
(that is something for the weaklings)
and suddenly ... it's there:
"this program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down"
Now all you can do is click that OK button and cry into your mousepad.

But don't worry, you've just found the solution!
CRASHit gives you back the control.
You are no longer the helpless victim, sitting in front of your computer,
trembling in fear of the next crash.
NOW YOU'VE GOT THE POWER

Just want to tell you that I'm even more satisfied with the latest Locate version (check the URL in my first post in this thread). Some tiny but helpful changes had been made.

It's still beta but works perfectly here!

« Last post by brotherS on January 09, 2006, 09:14 AM »
Lets see if anyone wants to make some tool out of this idea. I just use Win+i to pop up an input box where I could enter an URL - or I could use other triggers right in that box too, for example search http://www.imdb.com or http://fileforum.betanews.com/

This works pretty damn fast. If this would be something for you too, just let me know.

May be just the excuse you need to blow out the cobwebs by doing a fresh install of Windows. :)
I'll only consider this when I have really, really, really bad problems :) Would take a week or two to install and setup everything again...

Uninstall the driver, restart the comp, and let windows reinstall it. This fixes tons of problems...

Also, I find that if something happens "for no reason" it's probably a heat issue. It's possible the "recovery" period is simply letting whatever is overheating cool down.   ...?
Whenever I suspect something is overheating I will just stick a desk fan in front of the comp/device. If the problem goes away it's heat, if it stays it's something else. Maybe your case needs a canned air treatment.

One last thing, how often does this happen?
When I posted it hasn't happened in 5 or 6 weeks I guess. It used to happen more often...

I don't really think that it's a heat problem since I watch CPU temp all of the time, and I optimized the air flow in the tower case I own. But thanks for your "desk fan" idea, I should try that when it happens again!

Can you try playing an audio/video file in safe mode? See if it studders/crackles there?
IIRC Winamp did play sounds fine in safe mode (has been a while).

probably completely unrelated but a friend of mine kept complaining about his laptop not playing things properly even though he knew the same files had worked in the past - the solution was to turn dma back on - somehow it had been disabled.
Ah, interesting. Windows is really strange sometimes...

open up your computer case and remove any bird nests.
Have you installed any codec packs recently? And does this occur only on audio files or audio and video together?
I installed and uninstalled different codes packs in 2005, but the problem occures too rarely to be related to codec problems IMHO. When it happens it happens for every single audio output, audio and video.

I checked already, there are only the usual bats hanging around in the back of my big tower.

« Last post by brotherS on January 07, 2006, 02:53 PM »
Hi!

Sometimes all sounds played in Windows (2000) are totally f*cked up for no apparent reason, it's more some kind of chirping or beeping instead of the regular Windows samples. Same happens when I try to play something in Winamp or other programs then :(

I used to reboot my PC when this happened, but recently I found out that closing most of the running apps and giving the PC a few minutes to 'recover' is enough. Weird, huh?

Any ideas what could cause this? Any fixes?

More new software,i wanna see DC lay claim on the must have apps, stuff that ranks up there with foobar, winrar, etc.
Which in my mind DC already satisfies with it's in house and off-site contributions.
Keep in mind that mouser asked for suggestions for 2006, not 2007, 2008, ...

Well, the most often apps are in the Windows quick start bar (or whatever it is called), but I might try and like your new program too :)

I have to say though ,no offense to DC,Techsmith Snagit is the bees nees, the shiz-nit,the oops i crapped my pants
of screengrabbers. Then again, confessing i havent' even tried Screenshot Captor, the reason being the one raised here.I love the scroll capture feature.
I only do miss this feature every other month... Really a shame that you didn't even try Screenshot Captor, before claiming that SnagIt is SO cool - it's a nice piece of software, but not THAT great!
1473
Well, looks great for sure.

I just wonder if such a launch bar is more for people that aren't yet using the keyboard a lot (which is a lot faster compared to mouse usage)?
1474
Damn, so here I am again: should I try Hamachi or WASTE? :D
1475
There was a piece on Downloadsquad yesterday with a link to a specialised program for exactly this purpose - haven't tried it, but sounds like exactly what you're after: http://www.downloads...-configuration-vpn-/
They talk about http://fileforum.bet...Hamachi/1104137509/1 - I wanted to test it myself for some time, the ratings are rather good.
