I like Ken Follett. Haven't read Pillars yet, but I've read Jackdaws and A Place Called Freedom.

Just finished Life Form by Alan Dean Foster.

Currently, I'm reading the third and final novel in Greg Bear's "Eon" series.

The reason they can get away with this is complacency. If hundreds of thousands of people expressed their displeasure by no longer using Google Search, what would happen? But that won't occur, because the masses are ignorant.

I came across NanDeck today, and it made me think of this thread, and the list of prototyping software URLs in the OP.

nanDECK is a software for Windows (any version) written as an aid for game inventors, with the aim of speeding up the process of designing and printing deck of cards (useful during prototyping and playtesting).

It's Windows software, but can reportedly also be used on *nix under Wine.

A COWBOY TOMBSTONE . Here are the Five Rules for Men to Follow for a Happy Life that Russell J. Larsen had inscribed on his headstone in Logan , Utah . He died not knowing that he would win the 'Coolest Headstone' contest. FIVE RULES FOR MEN TO FOLLOW FOR A HAPPY LIFE:

1. It's important to have a woman who helps at home, cooks from time to time, cleans up, and has a job.

2. It's important to have a woman who can make you laugh.

3. It's important to have a woman who you can trust, and doesn't lie to you.

4. It's important to have a woman who is good in bed, and likes to be with you.

5. It's very, very important that these four women do not know each other or you could end up dead like me.

A farmer goes in half with a friend to buy a bull so he can increase his stock.
A couple of weeks later the friend comes by to see how his investment is doing.
The farmer complains that the bull just eats grass and won't look at the cows.
His friend suggests that a veterinarian have a look at the bull.
The following week his friend returns to see if the vet helped.
The farmer looks delighted: "The bull has taken care of all my cows, broke through the fence,
and has even serviced all my neighbor's cows!
"Wow," says his friend, "what did the vet do to that bull?"
"Just gave him some pills'" said the farmer.
"What kind of pills?" asked his friend.
"I don't know, but they sort of taste like peppermint."

I've used Ccleaner for years (including its "registry cleaner" -- and yes, I make a backup first), and it's never hosed any of my systems.

I've used SpeedFan in the past

Anyone know if SpeedFan works as a stealthy (i.e., no registry dependencies) portable app?

When I find a Linux distro that installs and automagically detects and connects to my wireless internet access point (the way both WinXP and 7 did), I'll consider learning it.

I love seeing this sort of thing. This is what makes DC so great (one of the things, anyway): someone has a slight problem with a months-old app, and lo and behold, the developer is still around, and willing to fix it!

Kudos to you, timns!

Yes, I'm amazed that with all that weight up there, the USA hasn't slid down the face of the planet and become the new land "down under".  tongue

It's because we're the most decadent, lazy society on Earth. And, the mentality of the dining-out (and -in, for that matter) American public is "you call that a full portion!?" When it comes to food portions, Americans tend to have a Texan attitude. We want it 'bigger and better'. Not to disparage the dedicated minority of US citizens who take their health seriously and even ... *shudder* ... exercise regularly.

This is a very, very dark path that we're racing down.

The darkest.
