Living Room / Re: How much Soda/Energy-Drinks you drink / week?
« Last post by Josh on September 30, 2009, 06:02 PM »
I drink diet sodas quite often, or at least I used to. I drink monster blue tab (Low Carb, 20 cal per bottle) all the time thou. Not so much for the energy boost (caffeine rarely affects me), but for the taste (Yes, I enjoy the taste of almost every energy drink minus red bull).

What's wrong with that quote? From my understanding, malware now includes viruses. So yes, like any other product in this category, I would not recommend running more than one at any given time due to negative impacts on the system.

Not being negative, just inquisitive.

(And by the way, Josh, I swear I've just tried to swat your avatar off the screen. I work with windows wide open at night, there are trees outside, so all kinds of critters, winged and not, end up touching down on my monitor. Your avatar didn't look any different - though of course I had seen it many times before. Good job! :) )

Always happy to amuse :)

A supercomputer from the 1980's CANNOT out-perform a supercomputer from the current era. This was demonstrated in War Games - The Dead Code where Joshua (AKA, The WOPR) out-processes Ripley, a modern "supercomputer" which has the power to immediately begin processing right where it left off despite losing all power and not being a redundant power system.

The issue I have with KMPlayer is that it loses my settings on a force close, which I have had to do numerous times when it finds a file it doesn't like. If that could be resolved where settings are saved each time you change them and written to disk, I would be happy with it.

Yes, but the difference is, I consider sites like facebook and myspace to be pure evil. Even more so than our beloved admin's cat, Saffron.

Exactly why I maintain only one service similar to facebook and it is military related and can only be viewed by people I have allowed to view it. Hooray for privacy!

Living Room / Physical Storage VS Digital Storage

Due to the nature of this "article", there isn't much to quote, so here is what there is:

Last time we did one of these, we wanted to show you how much data we create with our digital lives. Now we want to show you how data storage has changed over the years. It’s pretty mind-blowing. Enjoy

Living Room / R.I.P. - Patrick Swayze - 57
« Last post by Josh on September 14, 2009, 08:33 PM »

LOS ANGELES — Patrick Swayze, the hunky actor who danced his way into viewers' hearts with "Dirty Dancing" and then broke them with "Ghost," died Monday after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 57.

"Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months," said a statement released Monday evening by his publicist, Annett Wolf. No other details were given.

Fans of the actor were saddened to learn in March 2008 that Swayze was suffering from a particularly deadly form of cancer.

He had kept working despite the diagnosis, putting together a memoir with his wife and shooting "The Beast," an A&E drama series for which he had already made the pilot. It drew a respectable 1.3 million viewers when the 13 episodes ran in 2009, but A&E said it had reluctantly decided not to renew it for a second season.

Swayze said he opted not to use painkilling drugs while making "The Beast" because they would have taken the edge off his performance. He acknowledged that time might be running out given the grim nature of the disease.

When he first went public with the illness, some reports gave him only weeks to live, but his doctor said his situation was "considerably more optimistic" than that.

Why wait thou? The draft has worked beautifully for a lot of people. I have set it up for at least 5 households and every one of them loves it. Just because you have the draft standard and it's now been finalized does not mean that the draft will suddenly stop working :)

Living Room / Bug.n - A Gridmove similar application
« Last post by Josh on September 13, 2009, 08:24 AM »
This application seems to be similar to our very own jgpaiva's GridMove

bug.n is a software collection for tiling window management.

What is tiling window management?
→ Please refer to the "Q & A" section.

The benefit of tiling window management is, that you do not have to move and resize windows manually to get the wanted contents visible and in order.
bug.n arranges the windows dynamically, which means, that recently opened or closed windows are immediately included in the layout causing all windows to be rearranged not leaving any partially overlapping windows or empty screen space.
Please refer to the "Screenshots" section for a first impression of bugn-tiled windows.

The collection comprises several versions for Windows® * and *n?x/*BSD written in different scripting languages (AutoHotkey or pythonTM)

All,

802.11 had two items under consideration during the Standards Board meetings being held this week.

I’m am very pleased to announce that both P802.11w and P802.11n were approved today.

Although this email vehicle falls far short of expressing the sentiment, Thanks to the hundreds of 802.11members that contributed to these efforts, as well as the 802 EC and the IEEE Staff.

With me here as I write this is Paul Nikolich who wishes to add his congratulations to the group.

I expect to extend the celebration of the success , (while we continue work on the other amendments in process ) when we convene in Hawaii two weeks from now.

Hope to see you there.

Bruce

(a): Yes, as soon as newegg ships my copy
(b): I predict Windows 7 will probably last for a good amount of time, 3-4 years, before we see the next release (or at least a release date).
(c): I pre-ordered an upgrade copy, will be purchasing a full copy through my school, and will probably get it with my next PC.

So, to bump this thread again, what is the current best tool for this purpose? Filebox seems decent but it is no longer updated. I want to use something I know will continue to be updated.

Thoughts? Comments? Concerns? Quandaries?

Living Room / Carrier Pigeon faster than commercial ISP
« Last post by Josh on September 11, 2009, 07:44 PM »

FRUSTRATED IT workers have shown that a pigeon can transfer data faster than a major internet service provider (ISP).

Workers at a South African information technology company this week proved it was faster for them to transmit data with a carrier pigeon than to send it using Telkom, the country's leading ISP.

Africa's largest economy has poor internet speed and connectivity – and high costs - because of a bandwidth shortage.

Local news agency SAPA reported the 11-month-old pigeon, Winston, took one hour and eight minutes to fly the 80 km from Unlimited IT's offices near Pietermaritzburg to the coastal city of Durban with a data card was strapped to its leg.
