Living Room / Re: How to stop worrying
« Last post by justice on September 10, 2007, 07:16 AM »
The whole site is actually worth a look with a very interesting looking newsletters, articles on responsibilities and a Diary of Distractinos, which must appeal to you procastinators :)

(Anxiety Culture is a satirical webzine containing a wealth of gimmicks, ideas and images for navigating the Anxiety Age. We peek at the paranoias hidden behind the respectable suburban front door...)

Living Room / How to stop worrying
« Last post by justice on September 10, 2007, 07:12 AM »
Maybe a bit of an unusual topic but I just read this article.

http://www.anxietyculture.com/worry.htm
There's a useful gimmick to help stop worrying (we've already mentioned it briefly in How to Avoid Responsibilities, but it's worth looking at in detail). You simply cultivate the habit of postponing worrying. Your mind becomes (re-)conditioned to not dwell on worries in the present.
As someone who'd like to worry less, the trick mentioned seems worth trying. Do you worry a lot and what helps you?

Living Room / Re: Change title bar name (in any application)
« Last post by justice on September 08, 2007, 05:21 PM »
I've been asked a few times for permanent changes to TitleChanger. I can see what I can do. should come cheaper than $30 anyway. ;) just make the requests in the thread. Spent an hour on it before and had some problems with AHK to recognise windows by a unique ID (currently it works by processID), this means I can't save that unique-window-id should always be renamed so and so.

So any AHK help or ahk forum threads for doing something like that would definately help me implement it quicker.

am almost sure the login page on this forum was loaded before i pressed the login button, but that can't be lol. it's so quick, all the rendering is instant, except for some images you'd think all pages are loaded from the harddrive.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Latest FARR v2.00.140 ALPHA PREVIEW Release - Aug 15, 2007
« Last post by justice on September 05, 2007, 06:30 AM »
Maybe everytime you open something from FARR, 1 point would be added to that particular file or folder. so if you open it a lot of times, it'll automatically be on the top of the list.
that already happens

eh? it's perfectly possible to use your choice of mail client, irc client, torrent software etc with opera as you can disable these components and set defaults for protocol handlers etc.
That doesn't go for roboform but for example download managers, mirc, thunderbird, outlook, utorrent etc work fine with opera.

Even Keepass works, by setting a autotext (username, tab, password).

No its not perfect but you'd do yourself a disservice by skipping such a great software product without trying it because one piece of software is not supported, maybe write to roboform?

so how should we best use NTFS compression?

the code to letmetype is already available.
however there's no multimonitor support which is a dealbreaker personally. :)

DC Member Programs and Projects / Re: FileDraft - display newest files in a menu
« Last post by justice on September 03, 2007, 06:57 AM »
Wow great idea on showing a context menu like that. that would make an fantastic alt-tab replacement tool. I made a small ahk script before with a different solution: recent files RSS feeds from folders (see my sig)

Living Room / Re: Mac OS X Leopard - All show and no go, or is it worth a try?
« Last post by justice on September 03, 2007, 04:06 AM »
Multiple mouse button has been part of Mac OS 9 and bigger AFAIk, it's just Apple until recently have always chosen to supply a single button mouse. Any usb mouse from your local hardware retailer with multiple buttons, scrollwheels etc will work just fine.

I would be trying out a mac if I could afford one. (it's not so much dearer than a new pc with all new licenses, but it is dearer then upgrading my current pc keeping all the licences).

Also all new macs runs XP fine and very fast, just Vista is not supported yet (can't remember if this works in Leopard, might do)

try moving the taskbar to the left hand side, make it wider, then make the background transparent (would need tool). then use auto-tile :) comes close i think.

General Software Discussion / Re: browse text files
« Last post by justice on August 31, 2007, 03:46 AM »
I used irfan viewer with all the plugins
Can you explain what problems you have with it? theres a back and forward button as well as a delete button in irfanview, and am using that you can change the font used to view the textfiles.

When I add in a directory to the Search Folders tab, can I specify only to search specific extensions? And if I do, does this increase performance compared to searching all files? Thanks.

I'm sure irfanview can load text files too because I've used it myself. But you might have to download the plugin pack

General Software Discussion / Re: Best search and replace software discussion
« Last post by justice on August 31, 2007, 02:59 AM »
Great, got to try it out. It's now several weeks after and I have to say i'm still completely happy with TextCrawler as my search / replace tool. Topstyle is now adding a search / replace but even though it's one of the better implementations I still find TextCrawler better for the job.

One thing I'd like to see is a "select all" and "inverse selection" (alredy in 1.03) toggle.
When wanting to make a change in 20 files out of 25, it's easier to select all of them and remove the checks from 5 of them. Or select 5 and then do "inverse selection". At the moment i have to place 20 checkboxes.

Maybe even selecting multiple lines with the SHIFT / CTRL functionality from explorer and then press space to place the selection toggle. Although i've not checked 1.03 so that might be improved already.

edit: indeed 1.03 implements invert selection. Great! that's part of it done :)

I agree partly with what you're saying, but I think you should make a distinction between people who offer their software for no charge (voluntarily), and those who charge for it (commercial).

And ofcourse, on the one side constructive feedback sent with an aim to help with the development of a program, and on the other side non contributory (?) whining - which i've not seen on this forum. :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Asset Inventory Software
« Last post by justice on August 30, 2007, 03:54 AM »
At our college we use Wasp Technologies MobileAsset Combo Pack. I think it works (or that's our implementation) with a barcode scanner, barcode stickers, and recently a ultra mobile pc was bought to work with the windows version on the move. Apparently it also has a portable version with it but it's more limited.

The cost of it must be £2k in total (think we have the one user licence) this is including the samsung ultra mobile pc that we bought ourselves.

Hmm interesting response there about FirstDefense-ISR. It's good to have the snapshots at the fingertips.  I'll look into that thanks. the only problem with it if what Armando is saying is true (storing snapshots on the OS drive) is of course i'd need an additional backup solution in case hardware problems develop. But maybe that's unfair to say.

There's definately a lot of valuable advice given so far :)

I've altered the script so it tiles when i press and release the ALT-key, instead of autotiling for personal use. If there's any interest send me a PM.

When i'm using visual web developer studio express, everytime i pess the right mouse button all the windows are reordered so I can't run it fullscreen :(
1424
I'm not expecting it to run "as new". But I do expect my printers still working + no strange interface delays after testing and removing acrobe acrobat for example.

it'd ridiculous though that applications are able to interfere with each other, MS should buy altiris AVS and incorporate it into windows. ;)

mostly it's probably the registry and explorer issues, however this time it was system files.
