Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: "Invisible clip" ? (Ignore Clip Hotkey)
« Last post by tomos on April 20, 2017, 10:52 AM »
It'd be cool if you could just press a special combination of keys to do that...
great idea!

This doesn't cover your request, but worth knowing:
in 'Options' under 'Capture options', there is an ignore list for apps.
Which can be helpful, but not very flexible.

VueScan is the only scanner software I know of, that is able to take the output from different models and brands of scanners and use that output in it's own interface.

I bought Vuescan a couple of years back to keep an older scanner alive (there were no drivers for windows 7 for the scanner).
Not crazy about the interface but it is okay, and probably has everything most people would need; works with old hardware; is not *very* expensive (but yeah, that's depending on how much you need it etc. -- not sure what it costs today).

Irfanview tip sounds good Shades,
there's also mouser's Screenshot Captor which is great for basic scanning:

I'm not satisfied with the scanning software that came with Canon Scanner LiDE 210

what do you need in a scanner?
What do you dislike about the software that came with the Canon scanner?

a full word processor for Android is Textmaker -
this page compares it with other possibilities on Android:
http://www.softmaker...textmaker-comparison

Seems you cant just get the Word Processor: the full office suite (Softmaker) for Android is 20€ (here) prob. cheaper in US$, but may still be worth it to you.

Note there is a free version for Android smartphones -- I'm immediately confused: I presume this can also be used on tablets then (?)

Disclaimer: the version for Windows I find very good, but I have not used it on Android.

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows 10 Privacy Concerns

Disclaimer:
I haven't used this software, so not recommending, but I know that the company is reputable and they make good solid (in my experience) image backup software:

O&O ShutUp10
https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10

  • claims to be updated for Windows 10 'Creator' update
  • says is portable

O&O ShutUp10 means you have full control over which comfort functions under Windows 10 you wish to use, and you decide when the passing on of your data goes too far.

Using a very simple interface, you decide how Windows 10 should respect your privacy by deciding which unwanted functions should be deactivated.

O&O ShutUp10 is entirely free and does not have to be installed – it can be simply run directly and immediately on your PC. And it will not install or download retrospectively unwanted or unnecessary software, like so many other programs do these days!

General Software Discussion / Re: Scan options Screenshot Captor

Thank you Tomos for replying, I tried as you explained it to me, but it does not work, I sent two sample sheets.
hi James,
I'm not clear from those screenshots: can you please describe exactly where/when it didnt work.
I see PDFs there in the thumbnail panel - I think SC cannot review these - you'll need to open them via the right-click menu (oddly, a double-click doesnt work to open them here).

Just in case (I was a bit brief earlier) -- the workflow is to create the individual scans first, then select all the images needed in thumbnail panel, then convert to PDF using the PDF button.

one option (the only one I know of) is using the 'Save as PDF button'
Tooltip says to select multiple scans/screenshots to create multipage PDF.

Haven't used it in a very long time, but sounds like what you want?
I dont think pages are numbered though.

Two out of three emails 'breached' -- but all ones I had heard about already.

I was freaked out lately by a spam email (of a threatening legal you havent paid this bill nature) that had my name, address, and *unlisted* telephone number. Was able to trace it back to a previous 'harmless' spam email, but I was not able to find out how they got my details. They wrote my name incorrectly (was spelled correctly) and wrote the telephone number in a slightly unusual manner. Have yet to follow up on it (not sure yet what I can do, but dont suspect I will have much success anyways).

General Software Discussion / Re: Adobe Acrobat - is there an alternative?
« Last post by tomos on April 11, 2017, 06:25 AM »
The only advantage I could find of Acrobat is that it seems to open files faster (or at least the app launches faster when you open the first file). But otherwise XChange is so much more user-friendly and customisable.

You mean there is an Adobe product that opens fast?  InDesign and Photoshop CS6 sure don't.

I find Acrobat Reader the best balance for opening / viewing PDF files:
note I'm usually looking at files with lots of vector graphics and/or images in them.
It is fast, and navigation & zooming is much more keyboard friendly than anything else I've tried, including PDF-Exchange (the last time I tried it at any rate).

Seems to work fine for manuals etc with lots of text too.

[Adobe is one of my least favourite companies, so take that as high praise for the Reader]

Screenshot Captor / Re: Blank white screen when capturing a browser window
« Last post by tomos on April 10, 2017, 04:34 PM »
Could be something to do with the anti-virus -- IIRC is often the culprit with blank captures.
Maybe try white-listing Screenshot Captor, and see if that makes any difference.
(What is the anti-virus programme btw?)

Adobe Acrobat is outrageously expensive (although moot point for the OP due to educational pricing):
if you really need it fine -- but I wouldnt buy it unless I did really need it.
Saying that, I dont use PDF editors, so cant recommend any (it's good to read the different suggestions here).

Softmaker recently introduced a new editor that would be worth checking out I think:
http://www.softmaker.com/en/flexipdf
(They also do educational pricing AFAIK)

Curt, does the machine have a video card?
Is the driver up-to-date? (if so maybe it needs an older driver :-[)

EDIT//
or maybe uninstall the driver and start again - but not being the expert, I dont know whether to recommend letting windows find the driver, or trying to find it yourself...

Is there a way to use the keyboard to get form the FARR command line (where I type) straight into the "Shell Context Menu" or "Properties" for the top item in the result list?
AFAIK you have to go through the context menu,
but that can be done via keyboard:

shift-F10
or the appkey** will work too, instead of using the mouse:
but both will only work once the item has focus (arrow down)

** not sure if it the appkey or the appskey, here it is anyways:

You could consider an SBX archive like a ZIP one, with only 1 file inside, and stored / non-compressed.
So yes, the file will need to be decoded / extracted with SBXDec to get the original file.
But, like there are software that can access files inside a ZIP archive without extracting it (like music players that directly can play MP3s stored inside a compressed archive), nothing prohibits to do the same with SBX archives.
It would be actually very easy, since the format is very simple, and the original file isn't changed in any way, just divided in blocks. As such even random access is possible without any issues.

thanks for that info

hi Mark0,
this does sound interesting for long-term archiving

Possible / hypothetical / ideal uses cases

Last step of a backup - after creating a compressed archive of something, the archive could be SeqBox encoded to increase recovery chances in the event of some software/hardware issues that cause logic / file system's damages

wondering: is that archive then (also) accessible in the normal manner (if without SeqBox password), or will SeqBox be required to access it?

The Hundred-and-one Year Old Man is showing in cinemas here in Germany atm.

Haven't seen either film, but read the first book, knowing very little about it beforehand: it was a real surprise, and great fun.
