Living Room / Re: Movies you've seen lately
« Last post by MilesAhead on October 01, 2015, 09:45 AM »
Ok.  I have to admit I like Limitless.  I watched the movie again, and watched the first two episodes on CBS online.  There does seem to be more thought going on than jumping between cars.  That's a plus.  And it does have some humor.  The Senator(tm) who is involved with the lead character is the lead actor from the Limitless movie.  It looks like he is only in a few scenes though.

As series go this one looks like fun.

If the software has free phone support I would think they would require you don't have a phone.  That makes it less likely you will call and create a charge for them at the call center that does their customer support.  ;)

@Shades there is likely a lot of sound insulation in the cockpit.  My father had a Ford he thought was so quiet.  But standing outside I could hear it had a really noisy A/C compressor.  But there was so much sound dampening material he couldn't hear it unless he had the window down.  Not likely to do that often when running the A/C.  :)

Yes, a diesel accelerates.  But it does it by winding out first gear.  It is generally really loud when you are standing outside the car even though the driver doesn't notice.  Many gasoline powered 4 cylinder cars have the same issue.  They want to push the MPG so they put a 4 cyl in a car heavy enough for a 6.  Again, the automatic transmission winds out first gear to keep it from dogging off the line.

I would rather sacrifice a couple of MPG and get the pickup of a 6 cylinder in a 2 seater.  But the other thing is they like the throw in a transverse mounted 4 cylinder to get the front wheel drive on the cheap.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Auslogics Disk Defrag Pro [free]
« Last post by MilesAhead on October 01, 2015, 08:27 AM »
The pro version likely checks where files should be located for optimum performance during the defrag, while the free version just defrags.

Isn't there more info about the feature-set that applied by default between these two versions?

The default in Pro is "simple defrag."  The only difference that stands out in the scanning phase is Pro gives a percentage fragmented with 2 decimal places.  The Free just gives an integer.  And if it is less than 1% it just says 0% fragmented.  The other thing with the Pro when I do a defrag I don't sense the difference like I can with the Free.  It gives this detailed report on simple defrag but it feels exactly the same as before I defragged the drive.  Kind of weird.  I hope it is not a placebo.  :)

Firefox 41.0.1 seems faster than 41.0

I tried 42.x beta and it still crashes like crazy.  I went back to 39.03.  Much smoother sailing.

Unless they happen to be delivering the item in person, and want to call for directions to your house.

.. and when you see what looks like a sink hole, drive right in.  It is not really a hole.  The entrance to our driveway is disguised that way to keep out the insurance salesmen.  :)

I like the pro version. It lets me defrag both my SATA hard drive at work, and my SSD on my home machine (has a special procedure so that it doesn't screw up the SSD).

So far I like it.  But for some reason "simple defrag" takes longer than with the Free.  Anywhere from 8 to 10 minutes where the Free is done in 5.  The analysis phase seems much slower.  I haven't tried any of the more advanced features yet.

From what I've heard on the radio here, this was broadly speaking about smaller cars being both affordable, and able to pass the tests, because smaller diesel cars are not so efficient nor as clean as bigger ones

There is also noise pollution.  These diesel autos generally have very poor acceleration from a standing start, such as a stop light.  To counteract that the automatic transmission is set to wind out in first gear to get the heap moving.  Listening to that ruins my day.

Miles, thank you for that, will definitely give it a try.

I also looked around a bit and it seems that restarting explorer.exe is not all that harmful in the end.

No.  It is just an annoyance.  You have to reload all the startup programs that start after login etc..
I set my Taskbar to triple height.  I have lots of room and so I let all the system tray icons show.  It ends up being simpler than trying to pick and choose.

this was unknown territory to me; Who and what's the video's music? It's good!
I highly recommend Lexx.

What's the video's music? Obviously not from the movies.

@dr_andus I would take a look at this tutorial:
http://www.sevenforu...rea-icons-reset.html

Also CCleaner has a cleaning option to delete the Windows notification cache but it does the same thing.

I have found no easy way to get all the icons to show.  I delete the cache, then uncheck the option to show all icons and notifications.  Then I set all remaining items in the list to show both icons and notifications.  Then I enable the check box "show all icons and notifications."  That seems to get it to act normally for a time.  But Windows will be gone before they fix the system tray.  There's no money to be made by fixing it.

Stanly Tweedle Lexx Music Video

this was unknown territory to me; I have never even heard of such series.
Who and what's the video's music? It's good! Obvious Brit

I highly recommend Lexx.  The "first season" is really 4 made for TV movies.  I watched the first one, I Worship His Shadow, again yesterday.  The series is a Canadian/German collaboration.  It is some of the funniest most cynical TV you will see anywhere anytime.  Not to give any surprises away, but "His Divine Shadow": is a man sort of like The Pope except he is all powerful and ruler of every citizen in a league of 20,000 planets.  I don't want to say anymore because you should just experience it.  There are 4 seasons in all.

@Miles and mouser,
enjoying all the older music/vids

Check out anything by The Drifters.  I think their biggest hit was Up On The Roof

Edit:  Maybe it wasn't their biggest hit.  But it was my favorite.  :)

Living Room / Re: How to make a sandwich from scratch

That said, I also agree with you that in order to follow his logic of "I'm making everything from scratch myself" I found myself saying "You didn't make that boat. You didn't make that knife. You didn't make that oven. You didn't make those seeds. You didn't make that [whatever]" etc.

It used to seem like every time I told someone I wrote a program they would pick out some eye candy fature and say "did you create this?" and as soon as I told that I used a library, API call or somebody's function they would say "so it's not original then."  I felt like saying to them "Come back and talk to me when you invent your own spoken language.  Then you will have something original to say."  Henry Ford was creative because he stuck a gasoline engine on the buggy cheap enough so that you could be a bank teller and buy one, not just the bank president.  He didn't invent the wheel and axle.  :)

I had Jimmy Johns once. It was OK. I still prefer Subway.

I probably told this a few times on here already.  But when I got my first job as a mechanic, the next street over was a pizza/sub shop.  I used to zip over when I could get an extra few minutes for lunch. It was a one man operation.  The guy did not believe in prepping the food.  When I ordered a Steak & Egg sub he put the steak strips on the grill and scrambled fresh eggs in front of me.  Then to toast it he put the sub in the pizza oven.  I had to wait about 10 minutes to get it, but it was worth it.  The guy would even encourage me to eat the sub there.  I asked why.  He said "because I enjoy seeing someone really enjoy eating what I cook."  That spoiled me.  No chain of sub shops can even echo the taste and quality of that shop.

General Software Discussion / Re: Firefox drastically bleeding market share
« Last post by MilesAhead on September 27, 2015, 07:36 AM »
I don't know why everyone's surprised that Firefox's market share is dwindling. This is exactly what is expected to happen when a company turns its back on its founding mission statement and becomes what the company founders professed to hate...and was the reason why they founded the company in the first place.

Reminds me of the "PC Revolution(tm)"

Instead of dumb terminals we have Windows 10 phones and tablets with central control of system updates etc..

I was watching a documentary about open source and Richard Stallman was telling why he and his colleagues did not even like login passwords.  He felt whoever was at the console should have total control.  So when administration set up passwords he decrypted them all and sent everyone on the system an email suggesting that their password(and he put their password in the email) was a bit long to type and subject to typos so why not just change it to the Enter key?  Apparently quite a few people did.

I can appreciate the dude was going for humor.  But the premise dead ends at what is convenient.  For example he has a kitchen with pots pans and electric stove.  He doesn't make the stove, electricity, or the pots pans or kitchen.  He may as well call Jimmy Johns(there is one on Flagler Street in Miami but I am afraid to eat a sandwich from there since the ads never mention the food.  It must be real crap if all they can talk about is how fast they deliver the crap.)
